The best bet is probably to do some more research on the kind of pattern you'd like, then check among the boutique suppliers for what you want.

I found a listing of speciality wallpaper manufacturers.

Wallpaper from the 1930s often had small floral designs. You might find something that would work in a current wallpaper catalog. Have you spoken to a designer. They often have wallpaper books that are only for the trade.

Anthropologie online has a small, but lovely selection. I don't know how authentic the designs are, but they have beautiful vintage-inspired, sometimes slightly boho/whimsical things.

I use them as a starting point because I love their design aesthetic. You can find who they carry and then look up the various design houses.

The perfect pattern is genuine old paper. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole! Well, I don't want to touch it. It's at eBay but not even close to enough.

This might be close enough, it is new and at least wipeable. Unfortunately, they are an English company. They used to have a US store, but it closed. It may be available through a US stockist though.

I LOVELOVELOVE old wallpaper (I am familiar with many of the sites mentioned), but it has to be what you want. And sometimes there are quantity issues.

I had to get an old guy out of retirement to hang my Sanderson paper several years ago. Apparently "nobody" can do wheat paste anymore!

growlery, more than likely nobody WANTS to do wheat paste any more. The new stuff has spoiled us. The little floral is in the right time frame I think but it doesn't speak to me. England is OK. I have friends everywhere ;-) Sometimes they visit the states, too. If that would have been the "right one" I would have ordered it and had it delivered for free to someone there. They could bring it here next time over.

I have a 1930 Dutch colonial - a friend who was helping with the whole house reno a few yrs ago was rather insistent with WP in DR & chldrens bath - I was in the "I hate WP" camp and ended up with it in both rooms

Even though I've stripped off my fair share of it,I still paper. I love to put that second strip up and stand back and LOOK AT IT!!It's georgeous!! Paint is paint. Wall paper decorates. I think I am going with a srippable vinyl......I have it.......it spoke to me to come and live here but I don't think in that room......so ........keep it in my stash or put it up. that is the question. When the kitchen gets far enough along, I will know if it's right.
