single bowl v. double bowl sink

So I was one of those GWers who agonized over the single bowl v. double bowl sink decision. I posted about this and many GWers gave me their opinions.

Final decision: I went with the single bowl. The Ticor S112 to be exact.

I love it!!!

It's huge and everything fits in it. No more having to have the cookie sheet half out of the sink to wash it. My large sink grates (they each cover two burners) fit easily.

Everyone that comes over immediately comments on how much they like my sink. (The cheapest purchase of the entire renovation. LOL)

That's great to hear! I've had my eye on the S112 for awhile now. Just waiting to finish our bedroom remodel before we tackle the kitchen!

I agree. I've also got the S112, in for about 6 weeks now, and while I decided fairly early to go with single bowl I was still concerned that I wouldn't like it. I love it for the same reasons mentioned above -- mainly because I can set my largest skillet in in flat -- no to mention the burner grates.

Everyone who comes in the kitchen comments about what a great sink it is. The woman who cleans my house says it's her favorite sink of any of the houses she cleans.

It will be less complicated than the double-bowl setup. Check your local library in the self-help section. They should have several homeowner repair books with good illustrations and descriptions.

I believe it depends on your "style" of dishwashing! As my kids have gotten older and left home (I'm down to 1 and a half now!) I have fewer dirty dishes and prefer to wash them by hand. When I rinse a dish I like to rinse it under running water. Maybe I would dip it into a double bowl, but I don't have a double bowl. I have a one and 3/4 but am also in the market for a new sink. What I think you should do is imagine how you would takle your chore the next time you are rinsing or washing at your current sink. How would you do it at a single sink? A person can always take an extra plastic tub for rinsing and put it along side a single sink. Or rinse under running water right into the single sink. Or you may be like the majority (I believe) who just rinse and put everything into the dishwasher. I have a single sink up at our lake cabin and ironically I have more dishes up there because of frequent company. I put a plastic basin in the sink for washing and rinse under running water. I am not a fan of paper plates but then again I really don't mind washing by hand.

I have a Franke VNX160. It fits a 36in cabinet and has 2 bowls in a 2/3-1/3 configuration. The big side is large enough to soak the grates from the cooktop. The small side is large enough to rinse veggies, drain pasta and the like. My old double bowl was a PITA. It was about the same size as the Franke but had 2 equal bowls. Neither was big enough to soak anything large. I think there are 2 factors to consider. The first is how wide a sink can your space accommodate. If the sink base cabinet is less than 30in, you should probably go with a single bowl. The bowls in a double bowl will likely be too small. If the sink base is 33in or larger, you might want to consider a double bowl with the 2/3-1/3 arrangement. Take your casserole to the store to see if it fits. But when push comes to shove, just choose what *you* want since *you* have to live and work with it.

I agonized about the single vs. double also, and I love my Franke Orca for the reasons you mention liking the single, plus the grates let me drain dishes or keep things out of the water on one side, while I work and run water or the GD on the other side, giving me the best of both worlds. Sooooo nice to realize that you made the best decision for you, esp. after all that agonizing, isn't it? :)
