Double Sinks: A Relationship Saver
It seems every house hunter type of show I watch on television includes a couple who simply must have double sinks in the master bathroom. Is this some sort of relationship saver? I guess when you desperately want to brush your teeth and someone else is hogging up the sink with fifteen minutes of shaving it's nice to be able to get your toothpaste and your gargle on at the same time.
I think this trend exploded in the eighties, usually in the same arrangement. It was a long counter atop a large clunky vanity that extended all the way to the floor. I'm not quite sure when the name "Jack and Jill Sinks" came about, but I suppose it had something to do with fetching a pail of water. Anyway, the days of the same old clunky vanity are long gone. Designers have created an endless variety of ways to arrange two sinks in bathrooms. Let's take a look at a few!

Translucent doors, gorgeous wood, and hardware mounted to the walls are great accompaniments to these matching bowl sinks.
Here the sinks protrude from one long wood wall unit, giving it a long uniform look. It's a great contrast to the glass wall across from it.
The small detail of cantilevered vanity keeps it from looking clunky. If you have an outdated vanity, look closely at the hardware on this unit. A coat of paint and new hardware can bring your bathroom up to date.
This vanity keeps the bathroom looking much more open. In order to have a look like this work, you will need storage elsewhere in the bathroom. One thing I suggest is seeing if your contractor can install a closet or a nook large enough for towels and toiletries in the bathroom wall. Sometimes you can borrow the space from a bedroom closet that backs up to the bathroom.
One of the many things I love about this bathroom is how well the light fixtures coordinate with the double-sink vanity. The overall effect gives it an elegant vintage modern look.
These square bowl sinks can make a tight counter seem larger because they are clear.
Although these bowl sinks don't allow for much counter space, the medicine cabinets and drawers underneath provide plenty of space to keep things close at hand.
Another gorgeous vintage-inspired pedestal sink keeps the space open and makes it seem larger.
These small sinks punctuate the wall with two dashes of white, which underscore the two circular mirrors. Only minimalists need apply for these!
Have you ever seen sinks tiled on the underside like these? It's brilliant!
