What do you think of this daybed for DD? Bedding ideas

DD and I are planning an update of her room. She's 8, going on 13 and tired of cutsie pink. She has a collection of mismatched furniture including an oak trundle bed.

I've been eyeing daybeds for about a year now with her in mind and spied one I like on CL today. The iron scrollwork sure is pretty, but I'm wondering how comfortable it will be for her--also if it'll be safe. Of course, we'd do it up with lots of pillows and squishies. Then the rest of the furniture I'd paint--either white or an accent color or pick up some other pieces on CL. She liked this cute white French Provincial set on CL--what can I say, she has good taste!

If I go this route, what type of bedding do I need? We just bought a new comforter set from JCP that she picked out. Obviously I'd need another pillow sham, but I'm wondering how do I dress the bottom part of the bed with the trundle? Do I just have the coordinating sheets show or do I pull down the comforter so it goes to the floor or do I need different bedding all together?

Lastly, how much should I offer since she mentions OBO? I was thinking $150. Then hopefully I can sell my existing set for $150 and break even.

Pretty day bed!....But awfully skinny mattress! I would buy a new mattress for the top and the trundle.
You get a dust ruffle that fits over the spring on the top part and hangs down and covers the trundle....then they make comforters especially for day beds....the ruffle is only on 3 sides not on the side nearest the wall.....and the one I have comes with king size pillows to make a sort of sofa out of it.

In terms of price, I think 1/3 of the original price is reasonable IF the product is very good shape. Used mattresses don't hold their value at all, however, so $100 to $150 sounds very reasonable to me.

You're welcome! For me, it was worth the extra expense to get an authentic looking and quality iron bed. I bought my DS a Wesley Allen bed before I found Charles P and it looks nice, it's a good bed, but it's very lightweight compared to this daybed and my DD2's antique iron bed. Charles P has free shipping right now and I might be mistaken but I don't think I was charged tax, since they're back east. I did wait a few weeks extra b/c I ordered it in a non-standard finish so they made one just for me, but it wasn't a long wait. Another option is Loading Dock Antiques where I bought my DD2's antique iron bed, but they don't usually have many daybeds. You can get a custom finish though if you decide to use a twin. They sandblasted mine to get the old paint off and repainted in a chippy, glazed antique white finish. It's a mom and pop shop (literally), and the wife would call me and send photos during the finishing process. Since it's an antique, it's a few inches wider than a standard twin, but it was easy and inexpensive to order a custom-size bunkie board from a local mattress manufacturer. juddgirl2, yes you are correct, I am going to have to hide that trundle which is very close to the ground, and I want the skirt to cover all that contraption and the mattress, so I will have to have a daybed cover - I am wanting it to look tailored and fit well. daisyadair, well I better not get a comforter, but more of a fitted spread type of thing - I hate it when comforters fall off the bed too - it is a pain in the neck. I am hoping to find a bedskirt that will be more fitted and tailored - want to keep my cats out of there too - not sure if that will work. Ha 1 I know one if not both ends will be visible on the room, so I want those covered too. We shall see. I do have a king sized chenille bedspread my mom gave me a long time ago that is a crisp white which might work - but I am not into crisp white colors in decorating. But I just talked to her the other day and told her she could have it back - she moved to a new place and wants a bigger bedspread - thank goodness I didn't get rid of it. Thanks for all your help. I am going to pick up the daybed/trundle this am so once I get it here I will be better able to tell what I need and how it will look in the room.

I made my daybed cover out of a full-sized comforter because I couldn't find a well-made, not cheap-looking cover that I felt would work in my Western guest room. Finished, it looked great (IMO) and fit like a glove over the bed. The problem was that once off, my guests would inevitably leave it folded up on the floor or on the easy chair throughout their stay. It was too much of a bother to put it back on every day! It was also very hard to launder it once they left. So, I bought a nice looking, easy to launder, thin, quilted cotton comforter and have packed the original cover away. I'll probably end up donating it to Goodwill. I used to keep sheets and a blanket or down comforter on the bed, so that it was ready to go for any guests, but now don't. I like to sleep on sheets that smell fresh and clean, and I think they loose that freshness after a while. Since we never have unexpected company, I now just put on freshly laundered linens the day (or day before) my company arrives. As for the new, thin cover, I wash it after every guest leaves. Another problem I encountered is that all my throw pillows also ended up on the floor while guests were staying here. I finally solved that problem by buying a large woven basket to hold all the pillows at night and just make a point of mentioning that it's to hold any pillows. We don't have company every month and the guest room, now with a different furniture layout than in the pic below, is also my study. I've become very frustrated with the daybed lately. I find it too high to comfortably use as sofa and end up sitting on my very comfortable leather easy chair (not pictured below) instead. I'm ready to rethink the room. I'm planning on selling the oak daybed and trundle and buying one of those very good quality automatic airbeds that I can collapse and store in the walk-in closet when not in use. I have a daybed in my office. I recommend getting bolster cushions. Otherwise, daybeds are weird as all get-out to "sit" on, there is just not enough back support and the angle is weird. Just to clarify, she mentions in her add she is only selling the frame (orig. cost $400) and that is all I need since I have two mattresses in DD's room now that I will be using. Then I'll just sell her oak bedframe as I agree most don't want a used mattress--esp. kids as you don't know if they bedwet.

lindac: Oh, so I use a sham with a trundle. Do you know if I could just use what I just bought which is a twin "bed-in-a-bag" and just get another sham? It includes the dust ruffle. I've not opened it yet, but my DD loves the pattern. The trundle will only be used for occasional sleepovers and sometimes my older daughter will sleep there when grandma comes to visit and then grandma sleeps in my older DD's room.

The picture with that ad does not show a mattress with the bed and the ad says "Sorry no mattress". They must hasve switched photos and changed the ad.

Get the measurements. Some daybeds are odd sized and you will have a heck of a time finding a mattress that fits without going custom made.

My eldest daughter has a daybed (IKEA, three solid sides, trundle w drawers so I don't need a skirt on the bed). The one thing that drives her nuts is that most bedding is quite wide, meaning that unless I tuck a fair amount under the mattress on the far side (hard on my back - makes the mattress lumpy too), the whole thing slides off in the night (duvet and blanket). I do find it hard to keep the bed looking tidy.

I slept on this type of daybed and now my DD sleeps on it. The thing won't just die. It is perfectly safe for an 8 y.o. unless she has unusual sleeping habits. We've never had an issue with bedding sliding off even though DD currently has an el cheapo Hannah Montana comforter on there that is very slippery. Then again, she doesn't kick off her covers so maybe that helps.

As for price? I certainly wouldn't offer more than $150. Maybe more like $100 or even less. At least I wouldn't expect any more than that if we were selling our version!

I like it, we bought one very similar to that for our guest room. With the trundle and 2 mattresses it came to about 500.00 so it's a reasonable deal.
