Anyone change themes for Christmas Tree/decor annually?

I was thinking back to when I was younger and my Moms friend had several different themes of decor that sh would switch up yearly.

I was wondering if anyone here does this? If so, how do you organize your stuff, by color? by theme? What themes do you do?

Also, I am thinking that I want to start some collections that I can save up and then start this in the next few years.

What are some good themes?

I do!

I have my red & green theme (or sometimes just shades of reds and pinks).

I have a 'woodland/ natural theme in greens and browns.

Last year I decided I wanted a 'mercury glass' theme and started picking up decor that would suit that.

I keep all of my ornaments in boxes labled by color.

I am really intrigued by this. I mentioned it to my DH and he said "It would be interesting." I have some plain colored balls that I can use for different themes.. so I am going to start collecting and organize by color. I figured the best way to do it was that.

The problem I have right now is that my DH LOVES colored lights but we are due for a new tree and all the ones we like are white. I like white and don't mind color. So I let him have that. But you can't do these themes with multi lights..

I think that tip #6 is especially interesting.... I've never heard that about overloading the tree bottom with ornaments on purpose. Then again, I'd bet that whoever suggested this tip does not have cats! :) Did I ever tell you about the time I made gingerbread men to decorate the tree? Every day I'd come home from work and find a cookie or two on the floor broken -- but I could never fine their heads! I eventually saw her do it: my cat would knock a cookie off the tree, eat the head, and leave the rest. :p So, is there a tip about WHERE TO PLACE A TREE within a room??? I have a 24' long LR, but it's narrow and one long wall has a large bank of windows across the middle, as well as a door. I've tried placing the tree in the far corner, but it seems so out-of-view. I've tried placing the tree on the opposite end, centered on the other short wall near the door, but it seems to be too "in your face", IYKWIM. I'm tempted to try placing it more in the center of the room -- near those windows -- but does it make sense to do that if the furniture has to be changed some to accommodate it???

Hard to tell without knowing what look you are goin g for. My MO when doing a tree is always clear lights.....the color comes from the ornaments....once I tossed all the multicolored lights my trees got lots more like I wanted. The themed trees, like the one with antique scrap and old tiny German glass ornaments is easy, I just spread stuff evenly being careful not to put similar stuff next to each other. And the kitchen tree with the straw and Navajo and Pueblo ornaments is a little harder....but I just hang stuff on the ends of the branches, smaller stuff near the top and larger near the bottom. BUT the big tree in the family room has other "rules". Again white lights...lots and lots of them....about 1000 on a 7 foot tree. Then I hang the large balls, the ones grapefruit sized and larger near the center of the tree so it glows from within. Then the other stuff larger on the bottom and smaller near the top.....and finally smaller stuff on the ends of the branches, with a "focal" ornament on every side....like a large Radko Santa. The pickle is well hidden and then I drape it with glass bead garlands.....and pour another glass of wine and sit and admire it.

I always decorated our tree in a theme. Always had it planned well in advance. Then we started having kids. I still tried to decorate the tree in a theme. It worked for awhile. Then the kids started going to preschool and bringing home all of their crafts. Each one I cherish and keep. They started putting them on the Christmas tree. I moved them to other places. They kept bringing home more. And more. And more. Year after year. And year after year I kept giving each one a special ornament that they might like on Christmas Day. I never really thought about why. It just seemed like what you do. Their 'bought' ornaments would go on their trees in their rooms the following year - preserving my perfect tree. So we found a work around. We would decorate the tree my way and as each day went by they would add their stuff until Christmas Day our tree would be an explosion of kid craft. Well our kids are now 11, 8 & 6 and last Christmas while we were decorating the tree it finally hit me. I watched as they pulled their ornaments out of boxes and recounted the stories of how and when they got them to each other and to me. It was perfect for me. We saved all of the Christmas craft ornaments for the end. I take a few pictures and then they put all of their stuff from years past on the tree. And It Really Is Perfectly Perfect ! A perfect mess of all of our likes and memories.

Don't know if any of these photos will help. These are three trees I decorated for a client a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, my photos are horrid as her house was still in shambles and I couldn't really get the images I wanted without tons of clutter in the way. Terriks I feel better now about avoiding all the mess. Anyway, For the first tree I just wrapped and tucked the wide deco mesh. The second, I used a narrow more delicate mesh and two wired ribbons. I started at the top and just draped the ribbons down, gathered and wrapped, and on every other wrap I would make a bow (just loop and wrap with branch or wire) and then drap down. For the center draping I did make a larger bow towards the center. The little tree I did the same technique as the second tree. You can also go back with any extra ribbon and tuck in a few tails or streamers where you've tucked your ribbon on the tree. This will help with a wispy look. Give the tails a gentle or tight curl (a can is a useful tool if you can't do with your hands.) Or don't worry about draping your ribbon like a garland and just make loops and tails and tuck all around the tree. I hope this makes sense.

Dh wants... I want... colored lights...white lights...kids treasures...vintage...mercury ornaments..

Anyone planning to do this needs to consider several things - storage space, budget, and time/energy to decorate.

I now only do one main tree, a couple of smaller ones, and a lot of vignettes and the decorations take a lot of closet space. Fortunately this house has the space but it's something to consider and if I ever move to a smaller house I will have to edit my decorations.

If you change themes annually how many themes will you have, will you keep the ornaments/decorations or buy new frequently? Can be costly.

Are you only planning to do one theme tree per year or several? Takes a lot of time to decorate several trees. Of course some people bag them and put them away fully decorated. It would be easier perhaps but for me would take the fun out of decorating.

Just a few things to think about.

Roorezzi, I have a pre-lit tree with white lights but some years I add additional colored lights, usually green, blue, and teal. You might think about that and add extra strings in whichever colors you'd like to do in a particular year. Last year I wasn't feeling as energetic and just went with the pre-wired white lights, but it's an inexpensive tree and doesn't have as many lights as I think it really should. This year one section didn't light at all so I had to add extra white as well.
