Could you post a picture of your house or a similar picture? That way you could get a bit more direction. There is a pretty standard "colonial" set of profiles that is all nice looking, but a 12/12 window may be a slightly older looking house and there may be something a bit less typical that would look really good.

Congrats on your new home. I would seek out a local lumber yard (not the big box stores) and ask one of the salesman to show you some trim and doors typically used for the Colonial style home. There are some stores in our area that even have vignettes set up in their show room so buyers can see how they look first hand and the salesmen really know their stuff.

Taunton, Sunset, and others all have large-format books specifically on trimwork, with lots of pictures of various styles. They're available at bookstores, as well as HD and Lowe's.

There is also a book called "Period Details" by Judith Miller with lots of good information, but I'm not sure it's still in print and, because it's British, the details may not be fully appropriate for American colonial style.

Hire a designer now. This is only one of a gazillion decisions that you will need to make and you want those decisions to be unified and cohesive. That's exactly what a designer does and it's a lot cheaper than choosing items you regret.

Thanks for the responses! I only have the cad plans now and will try to scan them in. There is a house nearby that looks somewhat similar to what we're planning, so I'll see if I can post a picture of it. I want to make sure everything looks cohesive so that's why I wanted to seek advice for the best way to do that. I've been in some newer homes where it looks like people picked what they like, but it doesn't all fit together in the bigger picture.

check out Old House Journal for period molding. My 1937 colonial has 1x6 baseboards with base cap on top. There was also a link about a month ago on the General Decorating forum on the HGTV message boards. Do not, I implore you, go with is normally called colonial casing. There is nothing authentic, nor attractive about this stuff, IMHO. It was used post WWI in builder builds. Good luck.

Ditto what Jaysmom said about builder grade 'colonial' casing.

A beefy baseboard and trim make all the difference. Consult the excellent sources above or get help to insure the trim provides the right architectural detail. Good casing and trim will cost you, but it is worth it IMHO.

Thanks! I definitely don't want the run of the mill stock stuff and will look into Old House Online. If anyone else has suggestions or pictures of any trim that wouold fit, please post :-)

Spend some time visiting a true millwork/lumber yard. They will have lot of selections you can look at and you can even puchase short pieces to take home (perhaps 1-2' pieces). Also, some of these places have displays areas set up so you can see them.

I bought a houseful of trim and molding like this - it is poplar which is great for painting. I also got some great ideas for trimming our interior openings with fluted trimwork, which I would never have used had I not seen their displays.

We just finished our new build. I went to a molding supplier and looked at his in-store displays. Large scale local lumberyards are also helpful.. I also spent a lot of time on houzz.com and printed photos of the wainscoting, coffered ceiling and other trim details I liked. My trim guy was also extremely helpful on site when we had to tweak my selections to make them work around odd jogs and the like. An experienced trim installer is invaluable. He can also make inexpensive molding look like a million bucks. A bad one can make expensive stuff look like ****.
