I don't know much, but I do know there is no way I would accept that installation. It doesn't even end even with the cabinets on the front side.

If he could not cut the piece the length of the counter he should have notified you prior to installation and asked your input on what to do. You should have been provided with options. He is wrong, no question.

He can order enough laminate and cover a piece the correct size. This should have been done right. He made a mistake and is trying to cover. Do not allow this.

It looks like he used a pre-fab counter with a backsplash & combined it with a pre-fab bar counter. He would have had to cut the first one at a non-45 degree angle for them to meet. I think it could have been done so that the seam reached the end of the wall & counter. He did the lazy man's job & had both cut at 45's; that's why they fit so wonky. He should have done them custom to fit right. I vote NOT to accept it.

Take a copy of the pix to his boss and make a big stink (starting off calm but firm). That is ridiculous.

The installer needs to fix the unfinished backsplash. Do not pay for this until they correct it.

call your credit card company immediately and tell them not to pay it. take these photos with you. this is completely unacceptable. did he really think you'd be ok with this? let us know how it resolves. good luck.

Absolutely a bad installation, from the cuts that still waters pointed out to the backsplash. The seam should have met at the outer corner. While you are trying to resolve it with the installer, call your credit card company and tell them you are disputing the charge. You did not get what you paid for, which was a properly installed countertop. Let us know what happens.

We get this all the time when a homeowner is trying to DIY a laminate countertop. From a "professional", there is no excuse.

If you had a flat deck top with no backsplash, doing a true 45° is fine, but with the attached backsplash, that's a totally incorrect approach. What should have been done is a "dog leg", with the perimeter with backsplash reaching the edge from a mostly 45° cut, or an "non standard angle" should have been cut, where the diagonal goes from the inside corner all the way to the outside corner. Both cuts would be an upcharge for my fabricator over a standard 45° cut, but that's the only way to do this without it looking like what you've got. This is an amateur masquerading as a professional.

I may be stuck with this. I spoke with the company and they were very nice. They offered to fix it in any way including refunding my money so I could get it done by someone else of my choice. They insisted that the prefab laminate counters can only be cut a certain way, (i.e. at a 45 degree angle). I checked out a friend's home who also has a laminate counter/breakfast bar and his backsplash also stopped short of the edge of the bar and it looks OK. So I will paint the walls and see if I still don't like it and go from there. I was actually fixing this home to sell so I hopefully do not have to live with this too long.

Honestly, if you're fixing it to sell, it seems even *more* important to get this fixed, whatever it takes---if I were looking at a home and saw this, I would start to wonder about the quality of the rest of the kitchen work. I say take the refund and get it done in a way that works--even if that means taking out the prefab backsplash and putting a single row of tiles or something there instead. I don't think it's critical to have the backsplash be matching laminate (provided you can take it off without damaging the counter beneath it).

Redo it withOUT the backsplash if you want to stick with this stuff and get it right. Then you can run a line of tile or even painted moulding in its place. But come on! That's goofy and bad.

I'm not sure I understand why you're stuck with this. They offered to refund your money in full? Definitely get it fixed. I agree with Artemis78, it will not be good for resale.

I agree with previous posters in that this stopping short is unacceptable. What my eye was looking for is something that we experienced in our previous kitchen remodel. And yours doesn't have this either... your two pieces do not match up and that will stand out to an alert buyer as a flaw as well.

Have them redo the job with two pieces properly cut from the same dye lot or have someone else do the job with the refund.

That is just plain awful as it is and I would highly recommend you get it taken down and redone.
Like the others said, a painted molding or tile backsplash is far preferable.
I am a r.e. agent and this would not fly with buyers at all! They would be calculating how much to deduct for the counter to be taken off.

At the very, very least, take them up on that refund offer ASAP. Before they change their minds, or tell you it is too late. Then go from there, if you really want to paint. But I agree with the above: use a different backsplash if the counters stay. I think that could salvage it cheaply. After the refund, you'd only be paying for the backsplash trim of your choosing.
