Nice score at Salvation Army today :)

Some of you all may know my horrible thrift shop habit...so we were driving in town today and we passed a Salvation Army -- I didn't even know there *were* S.A.s in our town (plenty of Goodwills) -- on a whim, we parked and went in.

Looked around, didn't find anything thrilling, then as we were about to leave I spied a very interesting looking loveseat, with the (gaudy) stripes of the fabric all lined up...upon closer inspection it looked cool, and virtually brand new. Furniture was 50% off today, so from amid the oak and Haitian cotton and chintz monstrosities I plucked, for $40, what turned out to be a Todd Oldham for La-Z-Boy Snap Sofa for DD's bedroom! It's *perfect* for her room, and we're about to take out the Danish walnut sofa and chair to put in the living room anyway...she needed something, so this will be great -- you can play with it and configure the cushions several different ways -- she's excited :)

They get mixed reviews on the web for their quality of construction, but this one seems fine so far (really close to new) and the fabric is the same as in the pic I'll link to. She needs it to last for about 7 years (up to college) and then we can call it successful. Since it will most often be loaded down with clothes (let's be honest :)) I think it will be able to last that long.

We figure it was around $1K new, from seeing what's written about it. I'm happy :)

Hi Flyleft,

Very cool find. I was thinking, as I read your title, that wouldn't it be funny if Flyleft happened upon some of our furniture that we just donated to SA--but then thought, no, Flyleft would not want a formica and tubular metal kitchen set. (Don't ask. It was a compromise between DH and me when we bought it for our old house 12 years ago.)

I think the sofa is perfect, and I love that you can configure it so many ways. Is it long enough (or comfy enough) for someone to sleep on? Enjoy!

Because of your post, I took my first ever trip to a Goodwill store yesterday. No such luck for me...they didn't have anything! I have to say though...had I seen the above vase without any markings, I may have passed it by. However, since I have a small piece of inherited Roseville pottery, I may have recognized the glazing and bought the thing even though I don't care for the pattern or coloring. Congratulations...your mother has a great eye! My Roseville pottery is like the eBay listing (but not my listing) shown in the below link. It is marked 455 - and in ink 5 F. Just before Christmas I decided to give away our unused fake tree and a box of outdoor lights. There must have been 30 strands of lights, some never used. We switched to LED. I figured I would get immediate offers. It was a drizzly day. So that I would not have to spend all day waiting for first person I posted that the first person who replied would have to be in my area within 15 min of my giving them directions as to where to pick them up. So as to not loose my privacy I said I would leave them on a corner for 10 min. If they were not picked up, I would go to second poster and do same thing. I would send them directions and give them 10 min after they received it. I was very nice and clear that this was so as to not waste anyone's time. There is a really mean person who has been responding to ads. Mostly telling those looking for handouts to get a job, take birth control, etc. I could not believe when I got reply from this person telling me that I was a mean and heartless person. That I had a hard time giving things away free by playing "games" with them. I know I should not care about this obviously disturbed person, but I rechecked my post and it was kind and clear in my reason for doing it the way I did. Turns out that several replies said they wanted items but lived far away and asked me to hold them for several hours. One gal got directions, then said she had no transportation and I would have to wait until evening. Finally, after several of these posts I found a local gal that I said she was in area and could be there within minutes. Sure enough she came by within minutes. I do not know what her intentions were. Maybe she would sell them, maybe use them. All I know is that I had something to give and she was able to not give me a hassle. It took me several attempts last year to sell an item at a good price. Flakes and cheapos were weeded out and eventually I got nice couple who knew value and appreciated the sale. CL can be such a pain but when it works it is worth it. I always meet at HD or other really public places and I use email that is a junk address that if I get spammed does not interfere with my actual address. Like I said, a pain but often worth it.

I have a 45yr old step brother, who I love dearly, but bless his heart, I have to say Randy is mentally one sandwich short of a happy meal and that is further complicated by a slight physical disability in his legs. As you might imagine, he had a very difficult time finding employment, but about 15 years ago he went to work for Goodwill Industries. To my complete surprise, Randy has a very good salary with a health & welfare package, including an IRA. On top of that, Randy has a wardrobe that some ppl would die for. Randy works on a van that goes around doing contract cleaning services for offices and apartment complexes and every day when the van returns to the processing plant he goes in the store and sees what they just got in. If one were to see Randy on the street, judging by his wardrobe they would think he was a doctor or lawyer or something. When I retired I mentioned to Randy that I wanted to get back into serious photography and he told me I should go to the store and see what they had for equipment. I did as he requested more or less as a coutesy to him and I did not find much at the store that I was interested in, BUT, the lady at the store told me most of the good photo equipment is sent to central points where they list it on the Goodwill online auction. I didn't even know they had such a thing, but when I got home I punched up the website, and wow!!!! Was I in for a surprise. In the last 4 years I have bought two professional digital cameras and 9 professional film cameras. (I bought the film cameras because they came in package deals and had extra lenses I could use on the digitals.) I am now four years into this project and to date I have amassed two Pentax DSLR's with 16 lenses and a long,long, long list of extras, all for less than $2000, whereas just one of the cameras cost over $900 on Ebay and about $100 or more each for the lenses. Needless to say, every day when I turn my computer on my first stop is the Goodwill auction, then on to GW....LOL. Last year I did all my xmass shopping on the Goodwill auction and everybody wanted to know where I found the things I got, but that still remains my secret. About once a week Jan & I go bargain hunting at the local Goodwill Industries, Salvation Army, St. Vincent DePaul and a local thrift store. We find its more fun that yard sales or the flea market and quite often we find much better deals, by example, last week I bought 5 large Pyrex glass baking dishes for about $1 each. All I can say is, if you like shopping at the thrift stores you would love the online auction. They have dozens of categories and there is something for everybody at super bargain prices, not to mention that the proceeds go to help ppl who are less fortunate than we. It was back this summer, not recently, but I found a great, great buy on a quilting frame and light for the quilting frame. It was still in the shipping box, and so was the light. The frame had been opened but taped back, but the light had not..I took a chance and hauled it home for 15.00. The sales lady said she was glad to get it out of the store as it had been in there over a year. I frequent that S.A. so don't know why I haven't seen it. Everything was in the box, including set up instructions and a booklet on how to start your quilt. My husband put the quilting frame together for me and I was estatic. They obviously did not know what they had, or people just do not want to quilt anymore. It was a Grace Z44 quilting frame. Yippee for me! Someones trash---my treasure! Many years of pleasure!!

That is a great find - I imagine it would be fun to change it around, and you could always slipcover it later if she wanted a change. I always loved Todd Oldham's bit way back in the day on MTV Style.

Thanks, you all! Did I do better than the credenza, pesky? :) We finally got to see it today and it was just too short, unfortunately. I think people were more my height than DH's back then.

And les and chicory, I'm honored to see you post! Chicory, you and I have been catching up on other threads, but les, I have been meaning to say it's nice to see you -- I hope you're thriving...

meg, thanks! If that dinette set is vintage, it won't last long at S.A. -- we actually have a vintage chrome/formica set -- the table's out in the garage and the chair is one of our go-to solid-as-a-rock chairs, the kind you can pull to stand on if you're in a pinch...is the set you donated vintage?

brutuses, guess we both scored today, yes? We g'webbers are going to decimate the thrifts/secondhand shops :)

jenny, I agree re Todd Oldham -- I learned that he's the ultimate fan of Charley Harper, too, which stands to reason...I get such a --just a *good mood*, I guess!-- from all I see of his (T.O.'s) work, no matter the medium. It can be reupholstered, definitely, although it would be a pity not to let this fabric wear itself out, since it was aligned so perfectly and has such a nice feel to it -- I'm blanking on the name of it but it's a rayon-cotton-y feeling fabric that feels like a challis, in a way--just perfect for a cool kid's room :)

I just need to find a vanity/buffet/credenza for the powder room! But this is a fun consolation prize.

(nah, I'm sure yours was better quality. Some lucky person will get yours and reupholster it)

And reno, I know -- I was thinking about what $40 would buy at Ikea, which is *NOT MUCH*, esp. with this cool striping (gaudy but cool -- DD said she wanted to bring more color into her bedroom anyway so she's in heaven :))
