3 new things to do with those Habs - with pics and recipes
Comments (17)Dusty: niiiiiice work on them hab cookies! They look a little more polished than our rustic batch, but with the same cool little orange hab pieces sticking out of the top and sides! mudman: you'll definitely get more heat if you put in more habs. It's hard to say why your cookies aren't very hot. Could be the habs (mild plant, or hot plant but a mild batch of habs after a rainstorm - mine do that), or the mix of ingredients, or your heat tolerance, etc. I've found it's just kind of a crap shoot. That's why I usually just put 5 habs, 3 with seeds/ribs removed, into almost any mid-sized recipe like these cookies - there's a randomness factor involved with the heat, so I figure that quantity provides an average, everyday hot-but-tolerable heat level that can then be tweaked as needed. The butter and sugar in this recipe definitely absorbs and disperses some of the heat, but still, it shouldn't be mild with 4 habs w/ seeds and ribs. Maybe try 5 or 6 next time. I should note that the tapenade has a higher perceived heat level than the cookies, so if you're trying to make something brutal and cruel, that might be something else to try ;) Also, have you tried a raw hab off your plant to verify the heat level? Sometimes they come off the plant milder, due to weather. good luck!...See MoreWhat were those dangly things called again??

Comments (23)Check out mosquitomagnet.com/how_it_works/ They recommend changing propane tanks every three weeks, somewhat expensive but very little mosquito activity at my house makes it worth the $16 refill charge. The unit burns propane and releases carbon dioxide which attracts the female mosquitos and traps them in the unit. I also use a added attractant - but it it not recommended for the asian tigers. I don't know how effective the mosquito magnet is on asian tigers. It only attracts biting insects though, butterflies and bees are safe....See MoreWhat would you call this 'stand' thing?
Comments (10)Steph, a lovely idea to make the mobiles with your southwestern ornaments. Around here, a lot of folks collect driftwood, and then use tiny screw eyes and monofilament fishing line to hang their shells or other things from those. I am in love with Swarovski and Waterford crystals, their Christmas starts, and that is what I give my granddaughters and grandnieces as a present every Christmas. By the time they are grown, they will be able to decorate a small tree with their collections, I figure. But putting them on a mobile inside near an A/C vent will keep them moving. I have three types of tuned musical windchimes that I've acquired over the years. The first one was made by Grace Note Chimes, then J. W. Stannard (also make musical instruments), and then Woodstock Chimes. Woodstock chimes had a screensaver program that I used for a long time, because the sound kept my house alive with intermittent tinkling and sounding of random notes. I think each of those folks maintains a website where you can listen to the sound of each of their chimes. Tuned chimes are wonderful. I still have chimes located around myy house here, where their tones let me know what the breeze outside is doing. It makes me feel connected to my environment. I had one huge chime I left up north in MA, but the strong winds there broke the cords holding it together. I have yet to mail it back to Grace Note Chimes to let them reassemble it for me. It sounds like church bells, so full, resonant, and mellow. I won't throw it away, it is gorgeous. To get a start at building your own mobiles, instructions should be available in many places, plus check your local library. Here is a link that might be useful: Grace Note Chimes...See Morenatal
