How much did *you* spend on plumbing hardware?
Comments (15)I'm currently struggling with this. Our plumber sent us to Ferguson's to finalize our selections. Of course, the initial bid isn't what we want in our house. We've been told that at Ferguson's we will pay retail price for the fixtures (I believe there is a kickback to the plumber for the fixtures). Our plumber has said that if we choose to, we can provide our own fixtures and he will charge us $50 a fixture to install, but it is STRONGLY discouraged. If we do this, there they won't guarantee the installation, blah, blah, blah. I'm still struggling a bit with this, but right now I'm budgeting for the retail price as published on the manufacturers site. I would suggest going directly to Moen's website and look at the prices for the fixtures you have choosen. Add up the price differential between the brushed nickel and ORB and see if it comes close to $2K....See MoreNeed Help - How Much to Budget for Appliances?
Comments (6)I've been shopping around, have just finished a remodel and have bought several appliances, so I'll take a crack - please note the following price ranges assume mid-range models and shopping around carefully for the best price. I've included what I just bought with notes in italics: Fridge: $1,000-$2,000 (add $500-$800 for counter depth) - I compromised and kept my existing fridge Range: $1,000-$2,500 (Assuming 30" range) I bought a GE Cafe AG range which normally retails for $2,200-$2,600, but I always look at the "scratch & dents" and found one with some minor scratches for $1,440 Dishwasher: $500-$1,000 I bought a higher end ultra quiet Bosch stainless for $865 - I just saw it at the same store I bought it at (45 days later) for $200 less because they're discontinuing the model (Them's the breaks!) Microwave: $50-$200 - I bought a small cheap one for $35, I don't really use a lot of fancy features and generally don't understand paying a ton of money for one - I'd rather just replace the inexpensive one when it dies. Down the road I'd love to get an Advantium, but it wasn't in the budget this time around. Total estimated price range for Fridge, Range, Dishwasher and Microwave $2,550 - $6,500 Best wishes - it'll be fun to see what others say....See MoreHow to shop cabinets within a budget?
Comments (20)Isn't giving the KD the budget the same as walking on a car lot and telling a salesman "I've got $25,000 to spend, what can you sell me?" You know where that story is headed. Why is it not the other way around? I mean, why is the pricing so secretive? Well not giving them the price didn't turn out so well. It's not secretive, it's just not that easy. This comes up on here all the time. I wish I didn't have to spend 4-8 hours pricing out a job in two lines and nudging the details to see if I can bet it to fit the budget- life would be easier. In 15 years I can count the number of times someone has had more money to spend than what they want costs-exactly once someone said to me- "that's all? what else can I add" Allowances are even worse as noted- one in a hundred is adequate if a KD was not involved to begin with. Most just dump in a number on a "builder cabinet" with nothing in it to keep the total price down. Client gets to deal with it after they have the job. I have a few builder that I price things out for ahead of time- but those tend to be better builders. I use a simple approach- if I can get you what you want for what you want to spend (and you like me) you'll buy from me. That means I get paid. If not I don't get paid. Doesn't matter how good I am, how much time I spend, how much you like me...if it doesn't work for you then you will go somewhere else. No matter how you approach it you are in charge of the sale. I carry 4 brands- from middle of the road to top of the line. I can take the middle of the road cabinet and detail it so it looks like the top end. Details cost extra, not just the sexy bells and whistles everyone gets caught up in, the real details. How things are put together for install, how they fit-flush ends, extended stiles, extended top rails, how is the molding stacked, where do the counters land on talls....can be as little as 8% or as much as 18. Add to that that even though brand x costs 10% less than brand y for Mr. Peabody's kitchen brand y came out to 3% less. Your in charge until you sign- trust or not- same results. Years ago someone taught me something about trust that I use to this day. -Everyone will at some point fail the trust you give them. Question is at what point and how much do you get hurt. -Trust is given, it is NEVER won. -you get to decide when and how much to trust- or not -if you choose to trust you have the benefit of that until the point at which the trustee fails (remember they will fail at some point) -if you choose not to trust you don't have the benefit, they will still fail, just won't hurt as much. In the case of shopping for cabinets- assuming your shopping a few places, you have nothing to lose and the KDs do most of the work unless you insist on shopping for different plans at the same time (even then)...See MoreHow much do kitchen cabinets really cost???
Comments (33)All cabinets are not created equal. There are many variations of materials used in the construction. Is the question is how long do you want the cabinets to last? What is the style, if you are looking for an inset cabinet door your options reduce greatly for stock cabinetry. If you are thinking of semi custom, do the finishes for the semi custom order match perfectly with stock cabinets in the order? Is there edge banding on Plywood that may come off the shelving or the face of the cabinet if it has a euro box. With stock cabinets will there be gaps that need to be filled with filler strips, detracting from the overall symmetry of your kitchen. All wood construction usually has plywood for the cabinet box and a face frame of hardwood, no particle board. Custom cabinets, with a factory finish completed at the same time for a uniform look, with no edge banding, or unnecessary filler strips, may be worth an additional expense. Those who have had a kitchen remodel done know that it is not something that you want to do often. For a little more money to have a functional, beautiful, well designed kitchen to wake to in the morning is money well spent....See Moresuzanne_sl
