Which dresser looks better with the bed?

I have decided to sell one of the dressers. My bedrooms aren't big enough to have both in the same room so every time we have overnight guests, I have to haul one of them out to the garage. That's just stupid. But I'm torn between which one to keep.

The small one is prettier (to me) and in better shape. The big one holds more stuff.

Sometimes I have them on the wall next to the bed, and sometimes on the adjacent wall. When next to the bed, the lamp on the small dresser is hard to read by because it's so low. I like them better on the other wall, but they wouldn't show up in a photo there.

So it boils down to: which one looks best with the bed? I'm not impartial, so I'm going by your answers.

I guess I could credit this with funkyart. lol If it weren't for her post, I wouldn't have put a critical eye to my furniture and decided to do this.

The small one, simply for the reason it works better as a nightstand. You would have to get out of bed to turn off a lamp, reach your glass of water, book, etc. if the big one was next to the bed.

The smaller one! I love it, it is adorable. And the perfect size to hold extra blankets and pillows for the bed.

The bigger one is pretty, but lacks the all-important "Awww!" factor that the little one has :)

Echinops vs Eryngium. For your locale, I would probably ask which one is more heat and humidity tolerant. Many of the "silvery blue" plants melt badly when subjected to high temperatures and sweltering humidity. I have not grown Echinops and most of the Eryngium foliage I've seen does melt badly when the summer heats up. If I were you, I'd go with a native Eryngium (Eryngium yuccafolium). This is a plant that has nice glaucous foliage, is super easy to grow, and handles the summer heat. It can be used as a see-through plant so plant it up front.

Melissia, A lot depends on your soil and your water table. For example, if you live on the shores of a lake--or fairly close to a lake, or if you live very close to a river, you probably have a fairly high water table underground and raised beds would be more important for you. If you have slow-draining clay, then raised beds would be more important. On the other hand, if your soil drains very well, raised beds are not as important. There's only a few plants that I think really have to be in a raised bed to ensure a good harvest and, for me, those few would be tomatoes, peppers, carrots and other root crops except all potatoes, and some herbs that require well-drained soil. I have grown potatoes in clay and in sand and they do well in either one. Sweet potatoes grow better in sandy soil than in clay, so if your soil is very heavy clay, you might want to put them in a raised bed. I also like to plant bush beans in a raised bed, but they produce perfectly fine at grade level too. It's just that my "good soil" is in the raised beds. I don't know if there is anything you should not put in raised beds. However, if I have a choice, I'd put most cool season plants at grade level because the soil at grade level often stays cooler than that in raised beds. (With a thick layer of mulch, though, you can keep the soil in raised beds cool.) If you grow rhubarb, it probably does better at grade level for that reason. (In our climate, it does better in part shade too.) I don't know if this info will help any, but in my raised beds I usually have tomatoes, peppers, onion, garlic, eggplant, radishes, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, bush beans and sometimes cucumbers and melons. The broccoli and cabbage doesn't have to be in a raised bed, but I put it in a raised bed where it can be replaced in late June by fall tomato plants. Otherwise, I'll just get carried away and put spring tomato plants in that bed and then not have the room in that bed for fall tomato plants. : ) At grade level, I usually have potatoes and sweet potatoes (well, actually they are below ground, but you know what I mean), sweet corn, artichokes, winter squash and pumpkins, okra, black-eyed peas and other southern peas like crowder peas and cream peas, sometimes cucumbers and melons, pole beans and all greens like spinach, lettuce, collards, etc. Many herbs (though not all) go into my raised beds because most of them prefer well-drained soil. The only vegetable that I really, really, really think must be in raised beds is tomatoes. Sometimes even raised beds cannot save our tomato plants from an extra-heavy rainy spell. In 2004 and 2007 we had in excess of 10" of rain in one month and even the tomatoes in the raised beds suffered severely from having waterlogged roots, although they didn't suffer as much as they plants that were at grade level. If you have a high water table, you probably want to grow your melons at grade level because excess moisture can ruin the flavor of the melons--it literally waters down the flavor and also can cause the melons to split or crack. Which dresser for DD's room?

At age 9, my DD can reach all the drawers. What I've always done with her is to put the current season's clothes in the most easily accessable drawers and move the out-of-season clothes to the less accessable drawers. So far, it's working really well--girls seem to collect more clothes and accessories than boys so planning for enough storage in a small room has been a challenge for both my girls. I bought the highboy along with a matching bookcase from a college student whose mom had painted them for her when she was a girl. They were painted a seafoam green which looked nice in pictures, though paint had become a bit chippy. DD wanted them painted white to coordinate with aqua walls. The finish was fairly good on this and the bookcase, though I did have to sand, paint, prime, etc. I didn't strip the paint, instead used the Bulleye Primer which worked well. Here they are originally: I thought I had a better pic of the highboy the way we had decorated it, but what I did was to get some doll stands for her American Girl dolls and put them on top. Again, thanks a lot to everyone for sharing your thoughts. Below layout is what we settled on. I know it's by no means the best design, but it will be functional, and it required compromises from all parties involved (yes, that includes the cats too). The wall cabs are bumped out 2 inches. With the cover panel covering the doors and slight over hang, the cats will have a 15" deep platform. The counter top in front of the wall cabs will be about 11" deep, which is what my DH wanted ("to set things down on"). Good night and happy 4th everyone!

I like the smaller one next to the bed, but do you need more storage? If you place the taller one on the adjacent wall, do you have space for a small table to use as a bedside table?

Love the small one. As far as reading goes, put the lamp on a stack of books (I use some of my gardening books (big and pretty spines-pretty cover on the top one). That will raise the lamp enough for reading in bed. I have a stack of seven hardbacks on my bedside table to make my lamp high enough.

I see you already made your decision-- but I go with the crowd. That said, I love the larger piece! If you are anywhere near me (PA), let's talk! I could save you the hassle of Craigslist!

Hmmm, I'm in Tx. I need another dresser like I need a hole in the head, but I LOVE the finish.

If you use the little one as a nightstand, is it possible for the big one to go on the wall opposite the bed for more storage? Or use it in another area of the house. I have dressers in my living room, have had them in the entry or a wider hallway, an eating area. It's gorgeous and if you'd rather keep it, it can serve you well in another place.

I like the larger one, not by the bed though. I would use a small nightstand or table for that. I think the tall one adds more height to the room, and more storage. They are both very cute.

I feel your pain. I have too many pieces in my guest room also, but I need the extra storage - my old closets are so tiny that I have to use the extra pieces in the guest room for out of season clothes, bulky sweatshirts, etc. THe only overnight guests I have is my DD and SIL and they have to "make-do". It's her old bedroom.

No, I really don't have another place for it. The room feels really crowded with both pieces and the bed, and the other bedroom is equally crowded. They're both just 10x10.

OK. Get rid of (sell) the large chest and use the smaller chest. This will give your guests space to place their bags, etc. Do you have room at the foot of the bed for a very small bench for guests to lay their clothes on. Someone posted one on here recently - it was a small metal bench, with an upholstered seat. I think they might even be called vanity stool.

How would the large chest look in your new dining room. I love to repurpose pieces like that.

Would your taller dresser fit in a closet? I had a dresser in my closet and used the shelves for sweaters and other clothing. It was along one side and I hung my dresses/slacks on the other side.

You know that you can use them in other rooms, not just bedrooms? The large one would be great in a dining or living area/entry/kitchen/office, especially because of the doors on the front. It's not the traditional dresser configuration.

You must do what works for you, and if you aren't really attached to it definitely sell it. If you don't really want to let it go, it can be used in a variety of ways.

I would probably only use Restor-A-Finish and wax on that one Marti, just to refresh its beautiful wood tone, doesn't look like it needs anything else. The couple I've seen on CL looked like they might need a little more attention but yours is just fab.

I thought of using it in the living room, but it just doesn't work in there. I think I'd rather have it gone so I can get some pieces in there that work better.

For its age, it's probably in great shape, but the doors have little hinges and I'm always really careful opening them to make it easier on the hinges. I don't think it needs to be in a high use area.
