Show Me Your Dining Room Lighting

We are remodeling our old living room and turning it into a casual dining room. A desk with a computer will also be in there. Do most dining room tables have chandelier's above them? Or would a semi-flush light look alright? I'm so confused and need some inspiration!

I forgot to mention that I love this chandelier and was wondering if it's too fancy for a casual dining room.

That chandelier could be either fancy or informal. I think it's wonderful frankly :o) I was worried I'd see yet another of those bronze with white glass things when I followed the link LOL that I was very pleasantly suprised :o)

Now as to the other option you're considering....No that's not a good choice. A semi-flush is not appropriate for a dining room, even a casual one. If you're going to have a "dining room" for goodness sake make it look like one ad get that chandelier!

By the way, my chandelier is rather informal (I think it sort of has to be once a chicken lands on it). But the room is VERY formal. So if it helps, this might show you how the chandelier sort of adapts to the room...

Lynn, we just added a few new rooms, and the living room has a ceiling fan with white lights. Our new sitting room is between the LR and dining room, the light isn't up yet, but this is the one I bought. I cannot wait until the painting if finished and installed! It's a bit on the feminine side though, but it's MY room. lol. Out of all the fixtures I bought the past few months, from the old 'school house" fixtures to a DR chandy, this is the one I will treasure the most. Oh, the ceiling in that room is 8'. Thanks everyone. loribee your rooms are gorgeous! I love seeing your chandy there and would like to think I could maybe still use one. I was also thinking if I had to take it down, I could maybe put it in the kitchen thought I sorta like what's in the kitchen now. I am really excited about the makeover. The living room is large so it looks much better suited to a dining room with cabinets all around.

Thanks, my3dogs. I feel very lucky to have gotten it. I also have the dough trough he made. My sister has the bed and a desk (with a hidden compartment). Yes, Rob, the inside is painted. Both my grandmother and my mother painted it to match the dining room walls in their homes. I suspect everyone in the family always did that. I have not repainted. I love all these cupboards, whether corner cupboards or flat ones! They are a weakness of mine! Would love to find a step-back cupboard that I could afford. Found one once, but was with a friend who wanted it, so I didn't get it. Turns out she never did either-so disappointing. Then again, I would take any one of the ones all of you posted. Wonder how many would fit in the house??? :) Good luck on your search! I think the idea of trying to find some from houses that are being renovated is a good one. Lots of older homes had built in corner cupboards that people may be removing and there were often two in the dining room. Post pictures when you find what you want.

momtothreekids - I saw that Pottery Barn chandelier in someone's post a couple months ago (maybe on the kitchen forum) and I love it. I agree with igloochic that it could be either fancy or informal. I have an informal brushed nickel & white glass chandelier above my dining table. I have this one pictured below only in a smaller 5 light version:

I thought I had seen that someone here had that gorgeous crystal chandelier with the drum shade. I can't stop thinking about it!

jennine, that is gorgeous. Your chandi style may be right for the lady who was looking for chandi ideas for her old/new house.

Sorry to hijack this, but ice, how is your drum shade attached? Mine just sort of "rests" on the top of the chandelier and I used some thin, silver wire to secure it. The store (Shades of Light) didn't give me any directions about that.

What beautiful light fixtures! I adore the PB chandelier that you posted and it was one of the main contenders for our DR, but the idea of cleaning it made me change my mind really quickly. LOL

Here's a pic of our very casual DR light. I actually bought it for the foyer, but ended up putting it in the DR until I can find something with some WOW.

This is the one in the kitchen. Love it's funkiness....even without shades. :o)

Thank you for all of your pics & responses. I have already thought about the nightmare it would be to clean the PB fixture!

I LOVE the black candlestick fixture posted directly above. Can you tell me the company of where it's from?

The one issue I have with chandelier's is that I don't care for the "chain" part of the fixture. Does this bother anyone else?

That light fixture is from the French Twist collection by Kalco. I have a pair of the pendants over the island too. :o)

Jeanninepc99, that is a FANTASTIC chandelier. I'll keep that in mind for when i finally get off my duff and replace the builder's-choice chandelier in my home.

Sorry focus, but you get the idea. There is another sconce left by glass entry door and another right to the right of the side door to hubbys garage. Cant stand back far enough for all in frame.

Thank you so very much, Hubby's not housebroken, after 30+ years - have to do some house work (((yuck, I prefer gardening or mucking out the barn))) before you can see the rest. I got so excited, a thread I could post shots up, lol!

We're extremely casual. I chose a fixture most would hang over an island. It works for us.
