Please help with pedestal sink decision .. .

We're in the midst of building a new home (rustic elegant lodge style), and for the powder room I decided I did not want a vanity-felt it was too large for such a small space and pedestal sinks are so reasonably priced. Floor is an unglazed terra cotta, 13 x 13 and I'm struggling with the mirror over the sink. I prefer something more vintage and if I go with a white painted medicine cabinet, it looks Hamptonish. Could I go with a wooden, shaker style even though nothing else is wood in the bathroom? The light fixture above the mirror is woodsy-looks like a branch and has three globes handpainted with pine needles and pine cones. I'm sure you are all going Yuck by now, but after looking at countless magazines of white, neutral bathrooms, I wanted character.

Sorry to be blathering on for so long--I guess I am almost ready to give up and have a vanity made by the cabinet maker as I am struggling with this darn mirror/medicine cabinet above the pedestal.

Thanks to all in advance. You have been helpful before and I am sure I will be visiting this site a lot as we get closer to move in.

Since it is a powder room, do you really need a medicine cabinet?

Could you just hang a mirror and keep your toiletries in your other bathroom(s)?

I would do Cast iron in the kids bath, it is more durable. I went with a slightly deeper than shallow, but not really deep one in mine. I'd choose either the air tub or soaker. the whirlpool ones with water circulating I feel can grow stuff in the lines. We actualyl went with a large cast iron soaker Kohler "tea for two" if I did it over again, I might skip it entirely and go for a larger shower. but I don't think I'd get a whirlpool. I went with Chrome on the kitchen drain. its durable, and in my kitchen in a stainless sink, Chrome seems to match the sink. Chosen for two reasons. I hear some chemicals will take off the finish of "colored" drains, not that I plan on using anything too harsh but who knows. Also, the upcharge for the fancy drain was absurd

2. I have the largest Kindred square-shaped sinks that I could find to fit the space. My prep sink is about 8" depth, 14" wide and 17" deep (21" wide by 30" deep cabinet)and I love it because the bottom is pretty flat and the drain is in the very back instead of the middle. I probably paid a lot for that feature, but it's worth it, and we cook A LOT, as in, almost every meal, including hot breakfasts with fruit or veggies. When I'm making salad or chopping lots of veggies, it's terrific. Be sure to get a garbage disposal (if you can't compost). The cabinet is 40" wide by 30" deep for my clean up sink. My 7" depth clean up sink has a big bowl (17.5" wide by 20" deep) and a small bowl (11.5" wide by 17" deep - faucet goes in the 3" overlap). The big bowl doesn't quite fit my biggest saute pan (has a really long handle) or biggest cutting board, is by far the closest any sinks have ever come and it hasn't been a problem. My largest roasting pan does fit completely inside it. I do feel guilty about wasting water because it's so huge, so I rarely fill it more than 1/3 way full. If I don't have any pots or pans to clean, I'll just use the small sink. The big bowl has the drain in the back, but the small bowl has it in the middle (with the disposal) and I don't particularly like it there, except it's not too bad with the flat bottom. I wish the sink were 1 or 2" deeper because of the splashing, not to fill it any more. Both sinks have noise-deadening and heat-keeping properties (can't remember what that's called right now). If you don't understand what I mean by "flat bottom" then go put a tall skinny glass (like a champagne flute) in a sink and see how far it tilts over. I just finished cleaning all our wine glasses and could stand them all up in the sink. Hope this helps you make your decision. I know when I started I had no idea there were so many things to think about. I could never handle just one bowl sink.

After looking at this picture and researching, does anybody think this color is BM Quiet Moments or is a lighter color than that? The picture when I found it was labed "green and brown bathroom". I would not be opposed to painting my vanity an espresso color or something similar to the color in the pic in order to achieve this look. Thanks again for any and all help...I am in desperate need!

GreenAcresAli...It depends on how open your breakfast area is and what might be across from the table, or hem it in. In other words, it would help to see your layout. In the dining room in our last house, we did well with placing the table 30" from the window wall...That's close to Marcolo's measurement. If you did that, and if the room is open to a decent aisle, you have plenty of room for a table. If, however, at the edge of 7 ft is a wall or cabinetry, you will be pretty tight. One option would be to build in a bench on one wall, so there is no space behind the seating, which then allows the table to be more like 24" from the wall to give you a bit more room. There may be other options. How many do you want to seat? Newbie, I'm not a particular fan of the spindly legs, but that's personal style and otherwise, I like the table. I do agree with LL, that even without the banquette, that pedestal tables make for easier/more comfortable seating, especially if the space is tight. As I said above, we had 30" behind our table in our previous house, and thought it worked great, but we served and bussed from the front side, mostly, which had a wider aisle and a large doorway. 30" on both sides may be tight to move around once everyone is seated. The room around it partly depends on chair style and size, too.

We have a pedestal sink with an oval mirror above, 2 light fixture above the mirror in the powder room - no need for a medicine cabinet. Find a mirror that you like or have one framed. We never regretted removing the vanity that took up the entire wall of the very small room.

Thank you all for your help and the links. It sounds like it is not required that I have a white framed mirror just because I have a white pedestal sink? I really do not need a medicine cabinet as it is a powder room. It probably makes more sense to get something that works well with the pedestal and the light fixture. I found a custom shaker mirror website that may offer the best choice-one can even choose from over 50 colors, regular or distressed.

If anyone else has any suggestions regarding the mirror frame, they would be most appreciated.

I have a white pedestal sink in my powder room and a beautiful metallic painted mirror above it. Without a vanity, you will be short on storage space though. I added a small standing cabinet to store TP, etc.

It's totally normal/usual for there to be white bathroom fixtures in a bathroom decorated in pretty much any way you want. White fixtures are neutral. Here is an inspiration pic that Mari used for her bath, white pedestal sink in a warm room:

Here's what we did. (The lights really aren't uneven, weird camera angle.) The medicine cabinet is recessed.

Thanks so much everyone. This is very helpful. I especially liked the photos kgwlisa posted of the "warm" bathroom. One does not see those very often and it is more of what I am looking for.
