Where to end backsplash (pics)?

Hello,

We're planning to have a full run to the ceiling of black tile/stone (to match counters)for the backsplash behind the stove/exhaust. Problem is the stove is 30" and the hood is 36" and I'm not sure where to end the width. I'm leaning towards the idea of making it the width of the stove, but then I'm not sure what to do with the remaining 3" on either side of it. We're still not 100% sure what we're doing with the backsplash in the rest of the kitchen; we're considering doing stainless steel (if we can afford it), otherwise it just may be the 4" of granite (though we may do both). Here's a couple of mock-ups I did:

If you check out Zipdee's kitchen and what she did, it might give you an idea. Her hood is a bit wider than her stove also.
Go to about half way down the thread and you can see her photo of kitchen with the back wall finished and backsplash in place.

I wouldn't do anything with it until you've decided what you're going to do with the rest of the backsplash.

Thank you everyone for your input! I especially appreciate the photos, it is helpful to see examples. I think I will have it end where the upper cabinet ends. But I'm still trying to figure out an edging solution. One end of the tile is glazed so I may consider using the glazed end on the edge as Lake Girl suggested. I did see a photo of someone on this forum that did that (could be Lake Girl but I can't remember). Otherwise I may use the Schluter edging if it blends w/my tile well enough. They are sending me samples of their three gray colors and their brushed nickel. (my tile is gray)

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

Your tile looks great. If it was my kitchen I would not tile above the window. If you could replace that can light above the sink with some type of slightly blingy rectangular or oval semi flush mount light that might look nice. Here are just a few random ones I found (sorry if the pictures are too big). I'm sure other GWers could come up with more options If you didn't want to do a light fixture some horizontal art work piece could be put in the space.

I like zipdee's -- but hers had natural boundaries of the hood and the window trim. I agree with annz -- I think you have to decide what the rest of the backsplash is going to be.

I actually have a picture in my mind of slab stone the width of the stove, then a small mosaic backsplash that continues on up the 3" strips to the ceiling. You might try a mock-up that way with the strips being the same gray as the backsplash and see if you like the look.

Well, spoke to a guy who has done stainless steel backsplashes and it looks like we can do it for a reasonable cost so we're probably going to go with that for the rest of the kitchen. I think we're going to skip the 4" granite as well (unless that's a terrible idea - opinions?). So going to wind up with high-gloss white cabs, black absolute counters and a stainless backsplash. The rest of the kitchen has been painted a light grey. So any more ideas? I'm liking to 30" version... maybe I could just leave those 3" strip painted grey?

I should probably mention we're going for a sleek, contemporary look.

Thanks for any thoughts/opinions.

Can you get a 3" strip of trim to paint white like the cabinets? I think the gray strip will look odd, but maybe not.

I just think since your bottom cabinets meet the stove, symmetrically, it would look best if the uppers came out to the edge of the backsplash.
