Ceiling mount pot rack - hang em high?

I would love to put a small pot rack in my kitchen, and the previous owners left two really substantial hooks in the ceiling from their own pot rack. But they had a table under theirs, and we don't plan to, which raises two questions.

First, the function question: I'm trying to figure out if I could comfortably use a pot rack when it's installed so the bottoms of the pots are just within reach - that way they would clear our heads if we walk underneath. I know I don't need to be able to grab the actual hook, but is it enough just to reach the bottom of the pan?

The aesthetic question is whether it would look dopey to have a pot rack hanging just past the end of a small peninsula - not quite in the middle of the room, but close. I have a hunch there's some "rule" that the rack should be over something. Have any of you broken this rule? (And yes, I can bite the bullet and move the hooks, but these things are monsters and in there really securely. It would be great to be able to leave the ceiling alone!)

Would appreciate thoughts/experiences you care to share.

Sounds like it'd be dopey. :)

How about a picture? What else will be in the room? Can you stick a mini butcherblock island under it?

So here are a couple pictures of the previous owner's pot rack. Her butcher block is sitting in front of an old chimney stack, which we have ripped out. Our planned peninsula will be in that same spot, and will probably extend just a few inches short of where the butcher block table ends. So basically, at least a foot of the length of the potrack would be hanging in open space (which I see it was doing before, in this picture, and I didn't notice it being weird.) Her pot rack was probably 3 feet long; I would go smaller, around 2 feet, and would put less on it.

TYVM! I think you might be asking about this pot? It has a mystery palm (so similar to parlor palm, Chamaedorea elegans, but is different,) Tradescantia zebrina (WJ,) and Gibasis geniculata (Tahitian bridal veil.) In the winter, um, I just try to hang/squeeze everybody near a window. Furniture is re-arranged, nick-nacks put away... luckily winter is pretty short here, 3-4 mos. When I lived in OH I had a basement, with fluorescent lights. We've got the farm thing going, too. Dust is an ever-present "friend" here. I decided to post a picture of our beam when I had the pots hanging from it (please excuse my clutter, LOL) We're working on getting more storage built in to the kitchen, but it's not done yet. Our beam is 8' to the underside, and I simply hammered some nice strong long-shanked nails into it to hold the pots. Function all the way. : ) The pots were just high enough for us to walk under. Before you invest in a rack, you might want to measure and see just how far the pots would hang down after the rack was installed. I have a hard time feeling comfortable with objects in my head space-and I'm only 5' 4"! At 5' 10", your view may be through the pots rather than under them if the ceiling is 8 feet high.

i love my potrack..you can hang them from any ceiling..you might just have to buy new longer chain for the sides that will be on the higher pitched side..or longer for all of them if it is quite high..but that's ok. make sure you fasten your chains into the ceiling studwork to hold the weight of the pans. go for it..it is a wonderful thing to have pans handy ..some people complain that they get dirty..they dont that bad and if they do ..pop em into a short load on the dishwasher !

I made my own bar-style rack from copper barstock -- I had some left over from making my copper countertops, but you can find it relatively cheap online or at local metalworking shops, eBay, etc. I just lopped off a few feet of the bar, drilled holes in each end, sanded it smooth and used high-strength stainless-steel eye hooks to hold it up. You could use chain or just more hooks to hold the bar, depending on how high or low you'd like it to hang. The whole schmear costs something like $40 including copper bar. This works great with my shaker cabinets, and there are lots of places to buy the hooks online -- I warmly recommend getting the kind of hooks that are enclosed at one end, so they can't slide off the bar no matter what. Can you move the hooks, so the pot rack is more centered over the peninsula? I like the look, but wouldn't want to be walking under it all the time. Are you still opening the wall up, between the peninsula and sink? Maybe that would give you a little more space :)

Yes, we will be taking down the partition wall, but DH wants a really short peninsula. Still negotiating this... What a shock, huh? :) I could move the hooks, but just wondering if I have to.
