Thanks graywings. There's not enough space to put a table behind the sofa; the room is too narrow so the sofa has to stay against the wall. Otherwise our feet would be in the fireplace! Also can't really change the arrangement to place tall furniture there. But "filling in" that space w/ something(s), as you suggested. is what I have in mind. Thanks!

I would leave alone; otherwise, it may end up being too cluttered. Maybe you just need to get used to the new cleaner look.

Try moving the lamps to the inside corner, or center, closer to the sofa to close some of the blank space up. I think a 'throw' tucked over the back of the sofa would be nice :)

I agree that the lamp on the table needs to be moved to the left, so it is next to the person who would be seating on the couch. On the left side, pull the small end table forward and put the floor lamp behind it, closer to the couch as well. One you redistribute the lamps (and the shades) I think you will find those two covers much less noticeable, and it will pull the focus to the center area of the couch and mirror.

I do agree with squirrel that you need some lighter colored pillows and a throw tucked on the brown couch, to bring some of the lighter feel of the wall color down, and also to help make the seating the visual focal point by keeping your eyes down low.

With the seating arranged as it is (and needs to be, from your description), I think anything you put on the walls over the covers on the two sides will look out of place.

Just for kicks! I put some baskets in to eliminate some of the little stuff around. I think a larger plant on the side table, rather than three small pieces, feels more cohesive, too. The throw from the chair is across the sofa. Oddly enough, I think adding some more substantial (leaf?) finials to the lamps works a bit better :)

Your room appears pink? from here, so I tried some other color variations, though was having a difficult time getting the colors to come out quire right.

Wow. The most bang for the buck is those pillows courtesy of squirrel and the throw. It really warms it up without too much stuff. (and also, moving the lamps closer in to the couch).

Thanks! My room wasn't quite picture-worthy in that shot.. I would have gotten rid of that clutter on the coffee table if I'd been thinking. Good points on the lamp placement, pillows (and I do have them, they were just flung elsewhere in that pic), and throw. Painting isn't going to happen any time soon, but eventually -- I am SO not a pink person, but this color (Chippendale Rosetone) worked really beautifully with a painting we had over the fireplace. I also have a very large green room off the living room (kitchen/fam rm) so I wouldn't do green here. However, that's a topic for another day! Thanks for the tips. I can walk into anyone else's house and tell them how to improve THEIR decor, but when you live in a room, it's a lot harder to see it objectively.

That looks great! Interesting, I was trying to drape a runner down the sides of the table in one of my virtuals to cover the shelf stuff, lol. The lamp behind the table looks good from here, too.
