I'd paint the walls a sage green. It's gender neutral. Do the ceiling a shade or two lighter.

Paint the bookcase the same color as the wall and put it up on top of the dresser. Because it's a kids room fasten the furniture to the walls so it can't be pulled down on the kids.

Her vanity I'd paint the same shade as the walls and then do a very puffy skirt on it in the green with some pink thrown in. Think of it as a ballet skirt lots of netting, glittery fabric. You could attach the skirt with a staple gun and then glue gun trim over the top to hide the staples. I'd give any stool or chair you get her the same treatment. A oval mirror above the vanity would be darling.

I'd be incline to use green and white checks for the window treatments and bedding covers however knowing how kids are and depending on their ages that might be a battle you won't win. They all seem to love their special character bedding no matter how much it doesn't go with the room they are in AND since they are kids I wouldn't fight it. Save that battle for when they are older.

I would give each child a white board and a cork board in their bed area to write on and to keep things that are important to them hung.

Great ideas....although I won't put the bookcase on the dresser as it will be filled with their books and I want them to have access to that. We're also debating on putting some small shelves in the area where the boxsprings are, as it's a small space anyway, and keep the books there and try and add in a comfy chair in the corner where the bookcase currently is as we can no longer sit on their beds and read to them (they used to have seperate beds). My son is 4 and my daughter will be 6 in a couple weeks.
What do people think of a lime green and blue color palatte? Is it too feminine...along the lines of:

It seems girly to me, but it does have some blue I can try to pull in for my son.

What colors do they like? Seems that the first thing you want to consider is what they want in the space. If they both like green, you are all set. Is she into traditional girly girl colors, or would she have fun with something like a palette of navy and lime green and white?

Your rug would be perfect with this bedding - and she could bring in some hot pink accents if she wanted to:

Obviously they won�t be together for more than a few more years, so I wouldn�t invest in anything major.

my son is 4 and my daughter is turning 6.
Neither has a super favorite color that they would only want. My daughter loves blue as much as she loves pink.
I'm not looking for major investments, more what color to paint the vanity, what color valances, and maybe some new comforters. I do need to get a larger rug for that room, but that could stay neutral.

I'd let them each help you pick out new bedding though I love the bedding of your son's. Maybe you could find something similar that's girlie.

As for the cute dressing table, it looks as though it's made to have a skirt on it. It looks similar to a kidney shaped dressing table my sister and I shared when we were girls. It had arms that opened where a fabric skirt was attached. It looks as though maybe the arms are missing on this one, but you might still be able to add the skirt. You'd not be able to get to the drawer though.
