Trash placement (final cabinet layout) & Microwave Placment
Comments (22)Wow...this is all so helpful! Ok, so yes, we do have a disposal and now that I'm thinking of the way I prep: i tend to prep next to the sink even though I have more countertop next to the range. The other times I use the trash is whenI'm washing dishes so I'm thinking I should keep it next to the sink. And now that I know more of you have a utensil drawer right under, I'm feeling good about it. The dishwasher moving is interesting....but I'm thinking I'd rather break up the stainless and maybe it's better if my 2 and 4 year old didn't have good access to the trash as they tend to start playing with the pedal, making it talk, etc. So microwave is interesting. I feel like I'd rather just put it in a cabinet so it's not customized at all for the micro. That way if we need to change it in a few years, I'm not worried about the size. Now, my only concern is will I hate bending down? My reasoning was that its higher than the oven racks So how bad can it be? Plus, we are not a tall family...but I'm curious about how people who have lower microwaves feel... Brooklyn - love your kitchen. It's what we want in different colors! Can you show me a wide pic of the other side and share anything else you love/not love about the setup/sizing/etc? Is that caesarstone? We're getting raven caesarstone and it has the same texture.... Thanks!!!...See MoreCabinet Pull Size on 6' Pullout / Trash Pullout
Comments (4)Vertical pulls are fine for the 6" pullouts. My KD had recommended I do that on mine, but I decided to put the same knobs on them that I have on the upper cabinets and base cabinet doors. I also recommend only one pull on a 24" drawer, I think two almost-6" pulls will be too big. (Ditto the tilt out.) Now the trash pullout. Two things to think about... (1) Trash will be going in/out and there may be drips...do you want your dish towel possibly being dripped on w/o you knowing and then drying clean hands/dishes with it? (2) Unless you have a foot pedal and everyone uses it every single time (no exceptions), people w/"yucky raw chicken" hands (or similar) may be opening the trash pullout. Since the handle will be covered by the dishtowel, people will either have to move it or use it to open the pullout, either way touching it w/their "yucky raw chicken" hands or fingers. As with the above, do you want to unknowingly dry clean dishes/hands on a dish towel that was used this way? Like I said, a couple of things to think about. (Our towel hangs on either the refrigerator freezer drawer handle or the warming drawer handle...and even very occasionally on the ovens.)...See MoreTrash compactor v. dbl pullout trash cabinet?
Comments (10)This house had a compactor when we moved in 6 1/2 years ago. I'd always thought they were relics of the 60s and 70s but I quickly became a fan. When we redid the kitchen, I upgraded to a nice new Kitchenaid compactor:) I LOVE my trash compactor and wouldn't be without it. Two of my sisters also recently put in compactors and love them too. We actually added a 2nd one in the pantry for recycables. They get mildly compressed so we can easily go a week without them being all over the place. We had a pullout in the temporary kitchen during the remodel and I couldn't wait to get my compactor back. The pullout bin seemed to fill up within about 1/2 a day of emptying the trash, and it would spill out the top all over into the cabinet. It drove me mad :) I love that I only have to empty once a week on trash day. Sure, it is a little heavy but easy for me or DH to lift. Anita PS - We also freeze leftover meat, chicken, bones, etc, btw....See MoreNeed help, trash pull-out hardware, where and what type?
Comments (2)The pull on my trash pull-out is a knob, but it's mounted on the recessed panel of the door, and works fine. I think I had to use a shorter screw, but you could also put a thin piece of wood on the back of the door, to use the screws that come with the pulls, and to reinforce the door panel. Adding: When I first installed the pull-out, I had a cup pull with the extra piece of wood on the back, but later changed to a knob to match the sink cabinet knobs....See Morerobbcs3
