slightly OT: how dry is it supposed to be under your house?

A few weeks back, someone posted something about finding cracks in her basement. I posted that I had found a couple cracks in our garage floor. And then patricia43 posted something scary about a house in her town that had literally imploded because of cracks, and a freeze, etc.

Well, today I went in the crawl space below part of our house to look around. I've been noticing some water pooling outside the house and was wondering whether it was causing any problems.

Turns out I do have a small crack in the cinderblocks down there with some water running down the crack. I see water on the edge of the cinderblock too, so there must be more than one crack.

Of more concern is that almost everywhere I pulled back the tarp, I found that the gravel was wet. I did this even in the middle of the crawl space, far away from the outer walls, and it was still wet under the tarp.

Is that normal?
