Help with Kitchen Cabinet Brands

Hi,

We are trying to decide between the following brands of kitchen cabinets. The pricing for the following brands has been similar, but we are not sure which brand is the best value for the money. We will be getting full overlay, plywood construction, framed, cherry, glaze. The brands we are considering are:

cabico

fieldstone

decora

dewils

kraftmaid

also, how do you think these brands compare to woodmode, tedd wood, signature, all of which came in at higher prices - are we taking a major step down by going with one of the less expensive brands?

I think my kraftmaids are very well maid... er, made. They are Natural Cherry in the Layton style. All wood construction.

We have Kraftmaid Cherry Ginger Glaze and love them - I didn't look at other brands as I fell in love with our door style. We had a good experience and no major issues.

I chose a wide shaker door style (the name varies depending on where you buy it) in maple Ginger Glaze. I got all-plywood construction. The cabinets appear reasonably well-made; there were certainly tons of choices of cabinet types and sizes, and enough room for customization to make them all fit in my tiny kitchen. The finish is gorgeous - it's a wash of transparent color over a base stain, with just a little bit of the dark glazing in the corners. (A more traditional door style with more detailing would have shown more of the dark glazing - mine is very simple and just shows a little, which is fine with me.) They are framed cabinets (as would have been Medallion) rather than frameless (which would have made more efficient use of space), but for me, color was more important. ;-)

I can only speak to Waypoint. Had them installed roughly 6-8 months ago. Positives: -I think they look nice -The hinges and roll-out hardware seem fine -They did seem to keep trying to fix, well, my GC did anyway, and I didnt hear that waypoint pushed back about all the replacements Cons: -Their QC is poor, and I'm trying to be kind, I lost count of how many times some doors and drawer fronts had to be replaced, some arriving without the chocolate glaze, some with weird white stuff all over them, some much lighter, some much darker. I mean really, they should have a standard example door that they compare every piece to BEFORE they ship it out. -Their drawer hardware was crap. I say was, because my GC tells me they have changed their hardware since my installation. We actually have a meeting to discuss what can be done about my drawers (not all, but several) that still dont close correctly. I had given up and figured we just had to live with brand new drawers that dont close, (they did try several times to fix, both replacing and doing some odd fixes) but I guess DH mentioned it to him again. Having lived through the remodel, I wish I had just gone straight custom. And I wish I had done what you're doing, researched cabinets. They were literally the only item in my kitchen I didnt study, stupid I know. They do look nice, I guess I'm still not over all the pain.

I recommend Merillat Masterpiece cabinetry. They offer 16 styles in Hickory with 10 stain colors. The standard drawer boxes are solid hardwood dovetail with undermount, full-extension drawer slides and soft-close doors and drawers. They offer standard furniture board construction as well as plywood sides or an all-plywood box and have a limited lifetime warranty. Merillat Masterpiece is made in the same factory as Kraftmaid. Whatever you do, look at the warranty. It's a statement of how long the manufacturer thinks the cabinet will last. If someone offers you a product with a short warranty, ask yourself if you want to replace your kitchen 5-10 years from now.

I think you should try painting the walls a color first because I think that makes a huge impact. We are building a house in a subdivision so color choices are limited. I told our sales lady that I wanted white cabinets. She, and the other salesman, warned me that they had a blue cast to them. They kept trying to talk me into the cream but I want white. They had me go look at a house that had them with the builder’s Dover White walls. The cabinets looked blue! But I had no other options for white so decided to get them anyway hoping wall paint would help. When we went to the design center to officially pick them they didn’t look blue at all. They were the perfect white! I’ve been worried that the sample wasn’t actually the same color and they’d still be blue. Last week my sales lady got me a scrap of trim to take to pick out my granite. No blue! So, my point is, it’s the stupid wall paint that makes them look blue. So I will have to paint my walls so my cabinets look good. Here’s a kitchen we looked at (not our floor plan). The cabinets look like the color from a spray paint can. Their counters don’t help either.

I had the priviledge of seeing lsandler's Decora cabinets (pictured above) in person and they are FABULOUS!!! If you want to give people a severe case of kitchen envy, go with the Decora!! Her kitchen could be in a showroom!!

My cabinets are not yet installed, but I am going with Shiloh which I understand is similar to Kraftmaid. I was drawn to Shiloh because there was no upcharge for glaze. If I weren't this far in the game I would have looked more closely at Decora.

I had my cherry Kraftmaid cabinets installed last week and they are beautiful. I did go with the upcharge to have all wood construction and furniture ends, next to frig, cabinets by the window... Any ends that were exposed are a really nice finish and flush. Had no problems except for a drawer has a small nick in it so am having that replaced. Everything else went smoothly.

I've had woodmode cabinets for nineteen years. We're just getting ready to do an update in the kitchen and will be keeping the cabinets. We have one door that has split and will be getting that replaced for free. Other than that the cabinets have held up remarkably well. AND the style is such that we won't have to replace the cabinets, just update the knobs and pulls. (which may drive me to drink)

I'll be posting photos soon to get some opinions on a few weird things we have going on!

Wow love both the decora and the Kraftmaid - My DW and I were considering very similarly styled Kraftmaid cabs.

We ended up going with these unique kitchen cabinets based on traditional Japanese cabinetry. Green Tea Design is a small company that is close to us here in Toronto (Canada), but they apparently ship stuff all over North America as there was an American couple who had driven up from New York discussing their kitchen remodel the first time we went it to take a look.

The cabinets are free standing, so they don't have quite the same flexibility as completely custom built in cabs, but they were able to make them to our exact size specifications. Price wise they come in very cheap on the scale - some added costs for the custom sizes we wanted, but not much. Also nice that they're made from reclaimed wood.

I'm not too good with computers but hopefully I can figure out getting some pictures up - seeing so many amazing kitchens here all the time makes me want to share my own (which is nearly done now).

Please, avoid Decora at all means. We had a very, very horrible experience with Decora when we did our kitchen remodel around Sept. 2011. The whole project was delayed for more than 4 weeks due to their problems. Look at the video here:
