Yes! I am too! It's going to be an extended Christmas season with my mom here for several days, then friends coming for a few days over New Year's and then a family get-together in mid-January with food and fun. The January visit has become an annual tradition and it's like Christmas but without the rush and fuss of gifts, etc. Just good food and family and Scrabble and lots of little kids. Heaven!

What are you up to for the holidays, Auwm03?

More acurately, "Chicago" isn't experiencing a spate of killings. The ENGLEWOOD area of Chicago is. This is where our DIL taught junior high (to kids as old as 16), one of whom was finally expelled after threatening to kill her with a knife (after being suspended for threatening another teacher). It's a whole 'nother world. The shootings are gang-related, but nobody is safe. Very few of DIL's students lived with even one relative. School was their only 'safe place', and often the only source of nourishing food. Have any of you watched "The Wire"? That HBO series about Baltimore had it spot-on about the gangs, the police, the schools. In one scene a seasoned teacher explains to a new recruit that on Mondays the kids come in traumatised and exhausted. By Tuesday you see a few smiles. Wednesday is the best day. By Thursday they're alreading dreading the weekend. Friday is grim. It's a waste of time and money trying to help these kids the way we did it in the past. My 'solution' is for the public schools to offer boarding school to parents who want to see their children have better lives. (Same rules as private boarding schools regarding limited visits, rights to kick a kid out for cause.) We're already feeding these kids and paying out child support. Think of the savings for police, hospitals, prisons. Think of breaking the cycle of hopelessness for the ones who want to learn another way to live.

Anyone have a leather sofa that isn't a neutral color?

LOL constantly tweaking my decor. Yup. That's me. Usually it's not the big stuff like sofas, but DH has complained about the sofa we have from Day One, because he misses the leather sofa we used to have (which was too big for the room, so it was relegated to the basement). When I threw this new idea out, he was so happy. He said get red, get pink, purple...I don't care, just get me a leather sofa. Because there is almost no natural light in this room, fading shouldn't be an issue. Our red leather sofa is in a very sunny room, right next to the living room, and it has faded but isn't pink yet! I am hoping to convince DH to go to the furniture store with me tomorrow. Problem is, he hates shopping so he always wants me to just go alone (with his wish list in mind) ... but that's what we did last time and 5 years later he's whining about what I bought. ETA: this is the full size version of the loveseat we have in the adjacent room. It has held up very well for 10+ years. I might just go with this, if they have a color I like. (They don't show all the color options on the web site.)

Newhostalady, I think that you might have hit the nail right on its head!! Truthfully, I don't remember ever hearing of Belicia even though there was a short thread on her right here on this forum. Ooooh, that sounds like a great time! Happy chaos :) Hope you have a wonderful visit.

We live too far away from family, so it's just the five of us again: DH, me & our 3 sons. But my guys are the wittiest people I know, so Christmas Eve will be fun. Nobody makes me laugh harder than they do. Our tradition is Christmas Eve merry making with champagne, smoked salmon, cheeses, crackers, breads, cookies & chocolates. (But I have to go easy on the champagne because I'm doing the readings at 8:45 am mass!). Christmas day is relaxed: a nice fire, a roast beef dinner, & pumpkin pie & coffee later on.

Awm, that sounds like heaven, too! Wonderful family and a house filled with laughter and cheer (and good food!) -- what a beautiful time you'll have!

Yep, take it easy on the champagne! We'll be heading to 6pm Mass tonight and then home to get some cookies and milk and apples set out for Santa and the reindeer. Save a slice of pumpkin pie for me!
