Room Fan to replace a ceiling fan

OK, I might be rushing things a bit since I don't have my new dining room fixture in yet, but DH and I started talking about replacing the ceiling fan and fixture in our bedroom. We both like the glass on the fixture, but we are spending more time reading and working on things in our bedroom and even with the lamps, we'd like to have more light than the 2 bulbs allow. I don't want a standard ceiling fan 4 light or anything like that.

I am toying with the idea of a crystal drum, but we would need to have a fan in the room -- DH needs the fan while sleeping year round and I want it in the summer. Wrong time of year now, but I do remember seeing some decorative floor stand fans several months ago. Any other ideas for air circulation without a ceiling fan? Thanks

If your husband needs a fan every night then I think a ceiling fan is best.Just my opinion but even the best stand fan is just going to look more cluttery then a nice ceiling fan.

Can't you add more light in other ways such as lamps or can lighting?

This is not a duct. You are simply replacing the fan/motor assembly. The shroud (cap) keeps the weather out but is not a duct. After replacing the assembly make sure the screen surrounding the top of the shroud is in place to keep the critters out. The louvers you are talking about are the gable vents. These are meant to be an exit for air coming into the attic from the sofit vents. They have fallen out of favor with newer construction as ridge vents, which go all the way across the peak of the roof are more eficient. These setups normally provide all the passive ventilation needed for an attic but I suspect a previous owner installed the power vent because of insufficient ventilation. Make sure your soffit vents (located in the flat area underneath your gutters are not blocked.

Wall switches/simple dimmers deal with one function only, the starting/stopping of nominal 120v ac electricity going to the fixture which contains the load. Only the load should have a neutral (white) line leaving it plus the switchable line from the switch entering it. So your old switch should have two wires connecting to it, one bringing in 120v power (black?) to the switch and the other (hopefully not white) when switch is "ON" sending power to the fixture. I purchased the ceiling fan. The downrod is only 6 inches and the pull chains are also 6 inches. If I install this in my 12 feet ceiling I would not be able to reach the pull chains to operate the light. Can I buy long pull chains to operate this fan/light combo.( which has only 1 wall switch for the existing fan only). Would hanging a 3ft or 4ft long pull chain cause any problems. Since increasing the length of the pull chains is the cheapest option compared to buying a downrod($20) remote($35) or extra labor for an electrician to install dual switch . Please suggest. I have had two Broan/Nutone heater/vent/light/nightlight units since 2005. The first one had the heater burn out, which hubby and the contractor who was here for something else replaced. Then the light on it went POP and flamed out, so we decided to replace the whole thing because DH, who was in the bathroom at the time, said that sparks flew. When the contractor was back for something else again, I gave him the new unit (same model because we had blown-in insulation and did not want him crawling around in the attic to change the larger vent pipe that we needed to downsize if we switched to Panasonic) and he installed the different parts into the old housing because it was easier and the big metal boxes were the same. The heater on this one has now quit working. Now I will admit that we sometimes forgot and left the heater running for hours. The heater burning out was likely our fault. So I second (third?) the call for putting the heater on a timer. We are planning a remodel of this room and so the old aluminum slider window is still not replaced. We can't use window film in the winter anymore because we need to open this window to get the attention of our elderly dog when he gets "lost" in the yard and is barking during late-night potty breaks. So it is darn cold in this bathroom sometimes! We need something for additional heat. I don't know if I will go for the radiant light bulbs (remember the red heater bulbs?) or electric cove heating or just electric -in-floor heating. I used electric cove heating in my father-in-law's room when he was an invalid, and it worked very well giving his room the extra few degrees he needed. Here is a link: Comfort Cove We just had a thermostat in his room to run the cove heater, and it kept his room toasty. My DH reminded me the other day that when you get out of the shower wet, the heater fan blowing on you does make you feel cold. Its heat is not nearly as warm as you are after the shower. The cove heat is silent, another plus. I bet it will help dry and warm the towels hanging across from it, too. I had forgotten about the Comfort Cove heater because we had to disconnect it back in 2010 when we remodeled the kitchen. We ran out of circuits and I had to steal the Comfort Cover circuit for the stove top's down draft fan! I need to get a new service panel.

Yeah, I know the ceiling fan is a great fan option, but limited in styles, and non of them do for me what this does. I'm kind of getting hooked on the idea right now and my new dining room fixture isn't in yet.

Love that fixture! I would definitely prefer that to a ceiling fan (and I love ours, it's from Modern Fan and is quite sleek). I think a simple, chrome (no plastic!) floor fan could look really neat - its industrial look could be a neat contrast to the gorgeous glitz of the fixture. If you search "pedestal fan" you will get tons of options.

Before we added a ceiling fan in the bedroom we tried several different portable fan options. None were optimal. All were noisier than I would like. A stationary one wouldn't effective cool both DH and me, so there had to be rotation. And with rotation comes additional clicking and buzzing.

We have a decorative floor fan that looks sort of like the one in olychicks photo, but in an ORB finish. It wasn't quiet enough, had the rotation clicking, and was a PITA to deal with in the room when not sleeping.

I've seen the Dyson fans -- very cool and very quiet. Will have to check out whether they oscilate. They are pricey, but not a lot more than a mid range ceiling fan. DH sleeps with a c-pap machine that sits on his nightstand with a lamp (crystal hunk that stays) and a clock, so I'm thinking table top is not likely to work.

I was thinking a decorative floor fan on the opposite side of the room where there is a reading chair. We also have a tray ceiling and the small wall fans mounted up inthe corners might be a possibility, but I don't want them to compete with the light fixture (if we go that route).

We have ordered a new fixture for the dining room and won't get that in until January, so I don't think we will get to this project until spring. Maybe someone will come out with a crystal drum fan in the meantime. ;-)
