Replacing attic fan with power vent fan

I bought a "power vent" from HD with the intent of removing the fan from the shroud and placing it into the ceiling duct that housed the old fan. It fits perfectly with clearance for the fan to spin. However, in the manual it states to NOT install in any ducting. Does anyone know why I shouldn't install it to replace the old fan?

Is it really is a duct? If so, there will be too much resistance since they operate at a high speed. The motor will overheat, etc. It needs to vent to an open space, as well have enough replacement air (measured in sq. inches) from somewhere else (read the box to find out how much).

Thanks Homebound...not sure if it's considered a duct. The housing is in the roof of the attic and vents directly outside through a venting area that sits below a cap to keep the rain out. Is this considered a duct? It then pulls air from the attic which spans the length of the house and has a set of louvers (sp?) or vented opening on each end though they are only about 3' X 2'.

Any thoughts given this info would be appreciated.

We installed one on our last home and it made a considerable difference. While I agree with the previous poster regarding the need for adequate ventilation, the solar attic fan moves as much as 800 cfm of air actively. I seriously doubt that you would be able to achieve that with a passive ventilation system. The biggest issue, imo, is whether or not you have an attic space to ventilate. We had a partial attic upstairs (over 3 bedrooms). We recommended the solar attic fan to neighbors who had considerable more attic with direct Western exposure. They ended up installing two fans and greatly enjoyed the results from the standpoint of comfort and reduced cooling costs (a/c didn't have to work as hard without a hot attic). We also installed a whole house attic fan (to remove hot air from the house (we did not have/need a/c)). This was optimally used when the outside air temp was 10-15 degrees cooler than the inside. In California we had plenty of cool evening breezes but the inside of the house would take a long time to cool (with out the whole house attic fan).

Just to tell you where I am coming from on this - I wrote the book! (It's fun to say that.) "Residential Ventilation Handbook" It's been said pretty well already, but bath fans must vent all the way to the outside. Not just near an opening. Use insulated ducting to reduce the possibility of condensation in the ducting. Use 3 screws to attach the ducting to the hood. That will keep the ducting from turning or pulling off. Be careful that the screws don't interfere with backdraft dampers. (Cloth duck tape was made from the same duck material sailor's pants were made from. Not good at all for duct work.) If you can do it, transition from the 4" nozzle on the fan to 6" ducting. The flow will be much better. Point the nozzle of the fan in the direction of the exhaust hood. Air is lazy. if mounted properly, a good unit won't put out any noise or hum that can be heard/felt in the house. my parents house has 2 and you never know they are running. my house i put in a gable fan and at first i had it mounted wrong and it would vibrate teh wall around it. you heard it in both my son and my daughter's bedrooms.

One of those boxes probably has a dial that points to a range of numbers (temperature values) That is where you'll find the thermostat. Turn off the power (don't rely on the wired-in switch), open up that box and remove the thermostat. Obtain a new thermostat. If it's not the same make and model as the original, make sure that it will fit into the same box and has the same electrical rating as the original (something like 600v and 15 amps). Install the new thermostat the same way as the old one was in there (incoming black wire to one terminal/lead, black wire to fan connected to the other terminal/lead). Reinstall wire nuts, as needed, fold everything back into the thermostat box, turn the power back on and adjust the thermostat setting (start at the lowest setting and move it up till the fan turns off, just to verify that it works)

This is not a duct. You are simply replacing the fan/motor assembly. The shroud (cap) keeps the weather out but is not a duct. After replacing the assembly make sure the screen surrounding the top of the shroud is in place to keep the critters out. The louvers you are talking about are the gable vents. These are meant to be an exit for air coming into the attic from the sofit vents. They have fallen out of favor with newer construction as ridge vents, which go all the way across the peak of the roof are more eficient. These setups normally provide all the passive ventilation needed for an attic but I suspect a previous owner installed the power vent because of insufficient ventilation. Make sure your soffit vents (located in the flat area underneath your gutters are not blocked.

Thanks busboy...think I'll return the power vent and either find a replacement that is marketed as such or just see how it goes. For all I know, the attic fan may have been inoperable for years. Also, was just talking to someone about ridge cents and will look into this when it's time to replace my roof as it seems like a very logical approach.
