Comments (2)It was probably the soffitt vent. I would never connect my fans to anything other than a roof vent where it escapes outside my house. Our GC connected all of ours to soffitt vents. That is the bare minimum to pass code (at least 14 years ago). Our new Panasonic instructions state clearly they are to be exhausted out the roof. We had our Solatube installer fix them....See MoreTaking Water Through Gable Vent

Comments (5)Mary, Handymac's advice leads me to bring up one more point. People who post on the forum are, obviously from varying geographic locations. As such, we build under different codes and regulations. You mention that you have no specific code that you fall under. I'm in CT and fall under the IRC. For a bit of guidance, the IRC 303.3 states: Code Requirement: * Minimum ventilation for the bathroom is to be a window of at least 3 sq. ft. of which 50% is operable, or a mechanical ventilation system of at least 50 cubic feet per minute (cfm) ducted to the outside. (IRC R 303.3) There are always state and local amendments or variances to a national code, but in a heating environment, which I'm in, I wouldn't intentionally vent warm moist air into an attic space. I've seen too many wintertime cases of it condensing on the cool underside of the attic sheathing or on the exposed shingle nail points, then dripping down. Much depends on the age, air tightness, and climate that the house is in, as well as the amount of moisture being generated, the effectiveness of the fan in evacuating it, and physical size of the attic in comparison to the amount of moisture being vented. In the end, for me it simply comes down to code. IRC requires bath vent fans to be vented to the outside. Best, Mongo...See MoreVent bathroom fans through roof or gable wall?
Comments (10)JDS and Joe don't laugh at my lack of knowledge but explain something to me. We have wooden hexagon shaped attic vents in three gable ends. See link below - mine are similar to this. I need to remodel a bathroom and install an exhaust fan. Can we run the duct work to the exhaust fan out the hex attic vent? I would use the one closest to the bathroom of course. If so, how does the duct attach to the attic vent? I am assuming there are some type of clips or fasteners or thing-a-ma-jiggies that does that. DH and I DO NOT want to go through the roof, but would if absolutely necessary. I had always assumed we would need to go through the roof so this discussion may help solve our problem. Joe don't you dare get sarcastic - just tell me if I am on the right track. I would hire you to do this if you were in Kentucky :). And I wouldn't get three quotes. Hex wooden attic vent...See Morelithigin
