All White but soon to be Oak New Kitchen

I thought I'd finally show some photos of the kitchen area of the house that we've had under construction for the past 15 months. We're hoping to be in sometime in October. Right now it's all primer white, but will eventually be inset Quarter and Rift Sawn Oak with soapstone and a colorful backsplash.

The kitchen has a "vaulted" ceiling and the three planes come together at a point over the 4x6 center island. There'll be natural stained fir rafters exposed in the ceiling where you see the cutouts on the sheetrock.

Window is bumped out and will have a 12" window ledge raised up behind the sink.

The sink will be the 60" Kohler ProTaskcenter and takes up the center glass section in the triple window.

I'm excited to one day see the CC 48" in black with a Modernaire barrel hood that I ordered from Trevor. It will be on the left wall and you can just see the entry to the walk in pantry .

Bar/Beverage area opposite the island on the other side of the room (behind the red plastic chair) will have a small sink, refrigerator/freezer drawers and glass cabinets above.

Here's my cabinet stain, soapstone, backsplash tile and Marmoleum choice!

I agree that the island should go, it seems like it would get in the way. But, by removing it, that would mean replacing the floor and the original post said the floor stays I think. You don't mention a budget, if you are open to anything the above suggestions are all great ideas. If, however, you have a small budget, I would live with it for a while if it were me. Remove the grapevine and paint, that's an inexpensive update that will make a difference. If you can afford to update the counters that would really help too. If you can't afford stone, there are some nice laminates out there. That would be a budget friendly update, until such time as your budget permits you to do more.

Regarding color, I've been painting more and had my Mom and the decorator over yesterday staring at my colors. We all agreed that the ones we thought would work were washed out and didn't seem yellow enough in my kitchen. We we went through another 12-15 large swatches- trying for nothing too peachy nor too mustard-y! Keeping in mind that the same color looks different 3' away from each other... and these pics were taken at night. During the day with natural sunlight the colors aren't as saturated... The left drawer AND door are still Hawthorne Yellow. The right drawer is Little Angel 318 and below that is SW Solaria which is NOT an option. I'm really liking Little Angel but need to look at it for a few days in various lighting. (The big swatch painted on the bottom left is also Little Angel) Here is Hawthorne Yellow (left) and Little Angel (right) in all pics... With Mascarpone in the middle-- a yellow based white... This one is reverse Hawthorne (right) Little Angel (left) What do you think? (knowing that online colors are difficult...)

I am adding a natural gas line from my livingroom fireplace to my kitchen plus moving the plumbing lines and for my Washing machine and laundryroom sink plus having an outside faucet replaced that is on the wall where the new Washing machine plumbing lines will be placed. The estimate I got was $1200.00. I am in Central PA, so prices may be higher in other areas and I had gotten estimates that were far more expensive. The plumber I found is good. He has owned his own plumbing business for 30 years and has brought his son into the business. His explanation for some of the high estimates was that my work is a small job and many of the younger plumbers would rather do new homes and bigger projects and don't seem to want to do the small jobs on individual homes anymore. He told me he is trying to teach his son that you can make more doing a lot of small jobs than you can doing one or two big jobs where you have to bid so low that there is little profit. Finding the right plumber took some effort, but I got a reasonable price from someone I trust will do a good job. I have shopped hard for a good plumber, a good electrician and a good car mechanic since moving to a new city, but I have found all 3 and trust that any work I need done will be done right and at a fair price.

If these are scuffs (material laid down) then a simple solution can be a 'pink' eraser (yep...the thing at the end of a pencil) and a bit of a rub. The erasure has been the secret weapon of school janitors for decades. That's the good news. The bad news is this is just the beginning of your life with your floors. The finish is supposed to take the abuse (which it is showing it is doing quite well). Once you have determined the marks are scuffs (and you can successfully remove them) you can relax. I would recommend you put all of your furniture into place (you might want to check to see if anyone is wearing black soled shoes...and then ask them to find a different shoe) and then see how many of these marks are visible. You can then determine how much effort you want to put into erasing scuff marks for the next 25 years (the life of a wood finish).

How exciting! I love your choices- the exposed beams will be so striking.
Also, can I ask for details of your backsplash tile? We are agonizing over ours and the subtle variations in yours caught my eye. Thanks!

what are the dimensions of the larger bowls in the sink? i'm guessing not more than 22" wide (if that), which would be a deal breaker for me. there was a thread on three bowl sinks not too long ago.

nice materials, can't wait to see it come together.

Love your choices and your build. What is the source of your Soapstone and Marmoleum? We are in Amherst County and thinking your not to far from you.

Heavens, I can't imagine moving 12 horses; two was hard enough!

Labbie, the backsplash tile is from a Japanese Company called Wa-Kei tile and I'll put the link at the bottom of the page. The tile I'm using in the kitchen is "Twilight" listed under Mosaic tiles.

I fell in love with every tile sample from Wa-Kei that the showroom had. Gorgeous colors and textures.... I'd recommend seeking out a showroom as they have to be seen in person to see the subtleties. Here's another photo of the tile.

I'll be using another of their tiles (Gashu) in the Mud Room.

Kate, the interior dimensions of the two larger sinks are 21x18. My largest sheet pan is smaller than that so it's not an issue for me. For the few times a year that I might soak a grill or oven rack, I've got my utility sink if needed.

I love the functionallity of the triple section being available for handwashing, rinsing plates etc and won't have a prep sink so it suits my cooking style to do the unfashionable triple!

Archie, I'm still struggling with the soapstone source, I've fallen in love with Julia from M Tex in NJ but may have to install/go get ourselves if I can't talk Florida Joshua into coming on a northward trip. For Marmoleum we're using a place in Salem VA called Whitt Carpet One. There are two places in Charlottesville but we struck out with them.... I can tell you more if you email.
If you're looking for tile, I highly recommend Sarisand Tile in C'ville.
