I have a similar situation...21" sink and very small garbage can under it. I would recommend getting the larger sink. We have a 15", framed not frameless, trash pullout at our beach house and it holds two 13 gal bins but a frameless cabinet could probably hold bigger bins. I wouldn't want anything bigger because I like to take the trash out before it starts to smell too bad (DH loves stinky cheese). We are putting in a large sink base and an 18" trash pullout (inset) to hold two bins in our remodel at home. I really believe 18" is more than enough and can't wait to have a bigger sink.

wow--a 15" cabinet holds two 13 gallon bins? I have to ask my kitchen designer about this.

We chose a 28" sink with an offset drain on the right side of the sink (Franke GNX110-28) which will allow a pull-out lidded double trash bin on the left side of the sink. We don't store much under the sink and this way we didn't have to lose a base cabinet to garbage bins. If you don't need the full space under the sink for other purposes, and if you can find a sink you like with an offset drain, this may be a solution for you.

How hard is it to take out the garbage? Every other night doesn't seem too bad.

This is a hard question. One of my compromises because of my kitchen layout was that I got a standard 21" sink like I use to have, but was able to get a depth of 10". I was worried that my sink would be too small. Now that my kitchen is finished, I really love my sink. The longer depth really makes a difference. But, it's just me and DH. With a family of four, I think a bigger sink would outweigh the size difference in your trash/recycle pullout. 18" trash should be fine. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

i'd go for the bigger sink. I think you'd have more opportunity for regrets by not picking the bigger sink than not picking the bigger trash bins.

REv-A-Shelf makes several. Here is a double container for a 15" or 18" cabinet that holds two 9 gallon containers. Im sure if you used this same unit on a cabinet with no drawer over the trash pullout you could switch out the 9-gallon trash cans for 13 gallon.

This would probably be a lot less expensive than doing it through your cab company anyway (unless you're doing ikea).

I would go for the bigger sink. One thing you might want to check is whether your stove grates will fit in the dishwasher (assuming they are OK to b washed in the DW.) Some of the stoves have the one grate covering the front and back burner -- they're long! will barely fit in the DW so you need a big sink.

I would definitely go with the bigger sink. We take the garbage out daily whether its full or not just to keep things clean.

I'd go for the bigger sink. You can take out the trash more often, but you can't make more width for a bigger pan or project, even if the sink is deeper. I guess our double trash pullout (one used for trash and one for recycling) has 35 qt cans, but we have a family of 10 and it doesn't seem a big problem. I can honestly say I don't know how often it gets taken out, other than 'whenever it gets full!' ;-)

Thanks everyone...I did forget to add that we live in a 4th floor WALK-UP apt, hence my distaste for taking out the garbage more than once every 2 days!! I will check out your suggestions

I can understand that making a difference in what you might want...But does someone leave daily and can grab the trash and take it out on the way? Or use it as an exercise opportunity? (running up and down our stairs is nearly the extent of my 'fitness routine' and I welcome it as such) I don't know how old any kids in your household might be, but mine seem to always have energy to burn (even if they don't always realize it or want to use it) and could do 4 floors in no time.

I'm not trying to be flip, or discount your concern, but I'd still value the larger sink over the 2 more gallons of room in the trash.

I don't think the extra 2 gallons of trash will make much difference in how often you take the trash out. I would go w/the larger sink. I think in the long run you'll appreciate the larger sink more than a very slightly larger trash can.

I must have been mistaken. My bins use 13 gal bags, which aren't much bigger than the bins, but they're probably 9 gal bins. Sorry for the confusion.

bdaykitchen: We're purchasing Woodmode cabinets and they are going to supply the garbage bins. I'll see if I can find out who the mfr. is.

bdaykitchen: They are getting the garbage pullout from E.B. Bradley Co., a wholesale distributor. However, I'm sure there are many retailers that would sell these.
