Please recommend a Custom Cabinet Maker in Florida?
Comments (11)Jerzeegirl (if you are from NJ ... I just moved down here from NJ 3 years ago - lived in Hoboken and then in Glen Ridge). I spoke to both Millers Dutch Haus and Taters. Taters was recommended by my General Contractor -- but he has a habit of only recommending places where I think he receives a little something on the backend. Anyways, I liked the gentleman from Taters BUT he really is just a salesman without much insight on configuration or design. Additionally, he went silent on me for 2 weeks during the planning/pricing stage and then told me his delivery time for the cabinets would be 3 times longer than he first estimated because I "didn't order the cabinets last week". This turned me off and I started researching alternatives. On Gardenweb I had learned about Millers. I hadn't thought to contact them because they look like a furniture store ..not cabinet maker (and the furniture in their showroom is a bit on the old-fashioned side). I've been EXTREMELY PLEASED with Lee at Miller's Dutch Haus. He is a pleasure to work with and brought very good ideas to the table. The best part ...his pricing was actually less than Taters. I ordered all my pantry cabinetry (its a 12 foot by 7 foot pantry), mudroom (14 linear feet) and 15 foot window seat from him. Its scheduled to be installed 2 weeks from now ...so I can't comment on the quality of the cabinets yet but I can say it has been a pleasure to work with him. I also ended up ordering Conestoga cabinets for our 6 bathrooms from Brian at the CabinetJoint. Most of all because I was concerned about Florida humidity in a bathroom and wanted to ensure I was getting 'baked on' stains - so I never really planned to go w/ a custom cabinet maker for these. I had also spoken Rick at the CabinetAuthority BUT he really just wanted to give me a price and take my order ..where as Brian at the CabinetJoint was extremely patient and really really helped me 'design' out what the cabinets should look like. Note, both the CabinetAuthority and CabinetJoint are Conestoga resellers ...so they are 'selling' the same product. So if you want to go this route, I recommend CabinetJoint over CabinetAuthority - they'll meet each others' pricing so it really comes down to service and in my case CabinetJoint really shined in this department. I'm expecting my cabinets from Conestoga to arrive the first week in May ... so can't comment on quality of these yet either. I also need to find someone to install them (the downside of ordering online) ... so we'll see how that goes. If you'd like to speak on the phone, please send me an email and I'll be happy to chat. Also I can share photos and experience by mid-may ..at that time all my custom cabinets from Millers and my Conestoga cabinets from CabinetJoint should be in. My house is in Laurel Oaks in Sarasota ... so once they are in, if you want to stop by and see them, you are welcome to do so! Comments (5)The deal where you order a cabinet w/o glass is called "glass ready." It's more economical to buy the glass you want locally and it's easy to install. I have to ask: who does the cooking/clean-up at your house? You have some really strong opinions on stuff like pull-outs, so I hope you're the one who has to cope with crawling around on the floor to reach the thing at the back of the cabinet as well as the person who has to find the step ladder to remove heavy appliances from over the fridge. I get your frustration, but pull-outs and drawers are engineered to carry heavy loads and perform just as intended, which might be called "ergonomically smart." Personally, I love having my dishes in a drawer just opposite the dishwasher vs where they used to be over the dishwasher pretty much over my head. When I can open the drawer by the stove and locate the right pot at the back of the drawer vs having to crouch down and unload everything in front of that pot and then re-load afterwards, it makes me a much happier and more efficient cook. God knows I spend enough time in the kitchen without increasing that time with mindless make-work. As for construction, you need to check out the terms "particle board," "furniture board" and "plywood." You really aren't going to want all-wood cabinets for structural reasons. "Furniture board" (a variation on particle board) has a sort of standard quality, which is "good to excellent." Both plywood and particle board come in various grades ranging from crap to excellent and one should not be mistaken for the other. FYI: This many kitchen cabinets, in a roughly 11-odd feet x whatever kitchen plus these china cabinets (glass ready) cost us $14,000 3 years ago. They came from Home Depot. We did the install ourselves. Note that we have a pantry with pull-out shelves on the bottom half, a lower corner unit with a super-susan (the best!!), and an "easy reach" upper corner cab. Under the peninsula is all drawers. Because we have such a small space to work with, as do you, we chose frameless cabinets which gives you just that little extra space when every inch counts. Amish cabinet makers are awesome, but they don't do frameless as far as I know....See MoreCustom cabinet makers in bay area California
Comments (20)I'm not sure how much more expensive the "doohickeys" make the cost, b/c we have a doohickey-less kitchen. So I don't think I can be too helpful with information. Back when I was calling around, I found a number in the Good Service Guide for a high end cabinet maker described as "formerly available only to the trade." So out of curiosity I gave him a call. I simply said that I was beginning to price cabinets, and that I would be using a simple shaker style, and could he please give me just a very rough idea of whether or not I could afford his work. He estimated about 1000 per linear foot. I'm guessing that means just the boxes, sans doohickeys. For around 300 per linear foot, I spoke with "friends of friends..." These were typically "retired" gentlemen who had a passion for carpentry. Again, my cabinet needs are very, very simple. So that might make a difference. Then again, as long as one has the tools and experience, I guess it isn't a big leap from shaker style, to cathedral arches and corbels. My current guy is doing about 8 feet of cabinetry: 1 door unit, 1 door + drawer, one sink cabinet for Shaw's fireclay, one trash cab, and a dishwasher panel made to look like a drawer + door. He did the demo for me. The cabs will probably be unfinished, paint grade birch with plywood boxes. (Though sometimes he sounds like he might try to prime them if he has time.) His price is 3400.00 for this. So that's a little over 400 linear foot for the bare bones cabinets. I'll keep you posted on the work... Six figures just doesn't seem reasonable to me. But then, God is in the details, right? In that respect, I have a godless kitchen! :-) Francy...See MoreHelp - custom cabinet makers and contemporary cabinet fronts
Comments (10)Very often, local custom cabinet makers do not do frameless cabinetry, which is a contemporary look. That is because the equipment to make frameless cabinetry is expensive, and if they are already set up for framed, they don't see a reason to make that kind of significant expense. There may be one where you are locally that does do frameless, but it would be difficult for us to tell you - we don't know where you live. You could look at your local Angie's List, ask your realtor, or neighbors. You need to be clear on what you mean by "contemporary". Please provide inspiration photos. People have different ideas of what that means. I think you may be able to find what you want with a large cabinet company without having to find a custom or local cabinet shop that will make custom contemporary cabinets. As mentioned Crown Point cabinets are expensive. But Plain & Fancy is only slightly less - wait till you get a quote and you will see. Shiloh and Durasupreme that Herbflavor mentioned will be less but not low cost. You have not provided a budget, so it is very hard to know what to recommend....See Morerem1970
