Upper cabinet missing finished end panel

A few key things have gone wrong in my remodel and I'm trying to figure out what to do. We have three upper glass front cabinets in a row. On one end the cabinet has glass on the side also. The other end cabinet came with an unfinished end panel. It appears to me to be a mistake. It looks like it is a cabinet that is meant to be in between others, not on the end.

My SIL helped me order the cabinet through her lumber yard so that I could get her discount. So I called her regarding this. She said that they are sending us a "skin" to be glued to the cabinet. This "skin" I believe is not painted maple like the rest of our Cabico cabinets, but rather some lesser material that is painted.

I have other upper and lower cabinets that have finished ends and not glued on "skins". What should I do????

Oh dear,

Hope DS-I-L doesn't get into trouble...

Anyhow, I wouldn't panic before seeing the skin. We had a panel to finish off the back side of the peninsula cabinets, and it was the same quality of finish as the cupboards (stained maple though). I would be more concerned that the edge be also finished- (The edge that will face the front).

Hope it works out fine.

One thing though, it's my understanding that cabinets w/finished end panels sometimes cost more than unfinished + skins...have you checked? I may be wrong....

I guess you could wait to see how everything works out, but if your order explicitly states that the end should be finished & you paid an upcharge for it, then you might want to pursue either getting reimbursed or getting what you ordered. But, if you order another cabinet it will probably delay your cabinet install (they might be able to continue w/other items in the remodel, though).

I'm having a little trouble envisioning what you mean by applied end panels. I have side panels on my cabinets and wouldn't have it any other way. They just make the cabinets looks so much more finished and beautiful. I recently had the master bath cabinets painted and added the end panels and wow what a difference! They went from looking builder grade to furniture quality. I will try to add some pics, photobucket is not as easy as it used to be, I had more to show but it's just nearly impossible to get photos to show up in photobucket and it takes forever. The first two photos are my house and the 3rd one is a show house in our area from a few months ago.

Designov, I visited your post regarding your gorgeous new kitchen and due to the recessed doors that I love since I have been wanting the cabinets that you bought and the crown molding and the overall look, I felt it looked beautiful just the way it was with the matching end panels that were just not door style panels. I felt it looked pretty and finished and gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments and I will check out the rolled veneer. The problem is sending it to be painted if it is rolled up. You can tell we have never done this before. We thought that getting the doors painted with car paint they would be more durable, which we think they are. But we tried to match the paint on our own and it hasn't worked. So it looks like we will need to send all the finishing pieces to be painted as well. We thought about the 1/8 inch skin for it but don't know how to attach it or finish the edge or where to get it. I've included an additional photo of the kitchen there is a bit more done since this last photo was taken.

I've posted this on the wood working forum as well so I'm getting a little confused about posting, new to this, but the feed back so so helpful! The problem is sending it to be painted if it is rolled up. You can tell we have never done this before. A skin is a standard budget way to finish off a cabinet end. It isn't the best choice, but it is a perfectly acceptable one---as long as you didn't pay for something you didn't get. You can still order a false door panel to attach on top of the skins if you don't care for the look.
