height for hanging curtain panels?

We have a Cape style house, which means sloped ceilings in the upstairs bedrooms. Our bedroom has two windows; I'm trying to decide where to place the curtain rods to hang some new panels. One window has some space above the window casing, and the other window casing is right at the sloped ceiling.

I had wanted to place the rod for the window with the extra space above, right at the ceiling, to give the feeling of height. But would that look okay if the other window has the rod placed right at the top of the window casing (which is also right at the ceiling)? Any thoughts?

I think hanging both at ceiling height is fine and adds continuity.

I would follow the height of the window closest to the ceiling. Otherwise, the panels hung at different heights will only highlight the sloped ceiling.

Well it sounds like you don’t really have many options and have answered your own question. Hang them as on the right and get new curtains, seems to be the lesser of 2 evils. The option close to the ceiling is a much better look and the preferred method anyway. In looking at the pic more closely, I think visually it looks a little “off” (and not terribly so) because the crown is “closing in” the ceiling height. Not sure you want to get into removing crown, patching and painting walls and ceiling in that room just to do curtains - but that may be your only option to remedy the look. Unless you wanted to go a completely different route and go with some kind of outside mount Roman shade or top down/bottom up shade solution that mounts to the door itself. Not sure how that would look or if it would work.

@HU-36691265 - Sorry for confusion - I can clearly see the middle windows are separate! it will look great doing inside mount with a single shade for each window! It would also look great outside mounted but you won’t know your options until you find out how much space the header takes for the style of shade you decide on. It might be really tight in space between molding top & soffit on that right window. If you’re needing window treatments for your entire house, it’s worth it to have someone come to your house. @Flo Mangan mentioned Smith and Noble & there are others - Budget Blinds etc. They all have many styles of shade & blinds & are really helpful. You might get a new house discount if you ask& are doing all the windows. @Lorraine Blasetti - Drapes have been discussed at length & don’t work in this situation! The OP prefers drapes too but has wisely moved on! 😊 Blinds also come in fabrics i.e. Silhouettes etc.

Wow really? Maybe that's why I can't find many inspiration images online :D I really do like that look though. Here's the room. (sorry for the bad lighting, this room doesn't have a ceiling light.) Its been half finished for years and now I want to change it completely, but, in the mean time, want to hang the curtains differently than I had them, which was just full length panels on both sides, with rod hung close to the ceiling. I like the side pull back because I think it will soften the shades (which look better when they are open) and I don't like pullbacks on both sides. Thank you for response!

are you guys saying both windows at their respective ceiling heights, or both windows at the height of the window with the sloped ceiling (essentially just at the top of the window casing)?

I'm saying place the panels all at the same height, with the window that is closest to the ceiling being your starting point.
Are both windows the same height from the floor?

thanks for the clarification...I was confused on which ceiling height you all were referring to lol. Both windows are the same height from the floor, and both the same size, it's just the sloped ceiling meets the top of that one window.

If they are on the same wall, I would probably hang them at the same (lower ceiling) height. If they are not on the same wall or corner, I might hand them both at their respective ceiling heights. I think I'd like the first one you show hung higher, but without being able to see them both together in the room, I can't say for sure which way I'd go.

The windows are not on the same wall. It's hard to get both windows in one picture, but the first window shown above is straight ahead when you enter the room and the second window shown(with the lower ceiling) is on the wall to the right. The walls ate perpendicular to each other

Since the windows are the same size/height, I'd hang both WTs at the same height from the floor (top of window), and I think I'd use fairly innocuous rods that blend into the window frame (possibly white or even none visible) so they could be right up at the ceiling in the case of the one window. JMHO

Actually, I was thinking at the wall's ceiling height for both, but I bow to the greater minds here. ;)

Btw, I love love love sloped ceilings and the quirky room shapes in old capes and farmhouses.

Thanks for the input. I am going to hang them both at the top of the windows. I didn't even think about how the length would look if one was hung higher than the other, duh!

One more question....the curtain are simple panels. I don't want to cover too much of the actual window because we don't get a lot of light up there, so i want to hang them wider than the windows themselves. Is there a standard width that should be followed for that. Or just whatever looks right?

If the panels are the same length, you would want to hang them at the same height.

Someone may have a rule of thumb, but I'd have to do it by feel. Your width will be limited by the corner next to the window with the higher ceiling, but that looks like more than enough room. If you want the panels to come right up tot he edge and not really cover the window, you need to determine the width that allows the panel to hang with a nice fullness -- not too crunched up. That will vary with the weight of the fabric, texture, lining, etc.
