Curtain hanging height dilemma

Curtains I have and love are 96" in length. The left is where the rod would fall using them. Would that look horrible? The right is what I was thinking the rod should fall. However across the room are two windows that don't have transoms so the trim is a foot lower than the doors. And doing rods that close to the ceiling think looks stupid. They are just like the dining room windows in the background. If this was your space what do you recommend?

Yes the one on the left would look bad. The rods ideally should be at the same height around a room. You could put the rod below the transom. Would that put it in line with the window height? If so, you could put it there, if it's okay to leave the transoms exposed.

agree - neither of the 2 shown. Mount the rods above the doors but below the transom, you don’t need privacy on those windows or to block the light there since this is not a sleeping area. Have the curtains hemmed up to the shorter length needed for the lowering of the rods.

It is 8 French Doors that actually one open on each end. I was going to use the drapes on each end and shears all in middle. You can move the drapes very easily and I pull them back from windows every day. No problem. So, I thought that I could do the same where the door we use often (on side of house and have electronic gate. So, only my husband I only one's that use it. I found a picture (wish I knew how to show it) Where it's exactly what I was thinking about. It would be drape on each end where doors open, but we rarely use but one door and I could pull it back each day or even leave it pulled away from door we use.Looks fine that way.. I don't even use it that much since garage connects to back of house off kitchen. I do think they would look much better hanging same length. The one wall we did ended up costing 650, but I told him drapes and rods are "an investment." You plan on using them for long, long time!

You want the rods even all around, so wherever you mount the rod above the windows, you want the rod above the door at the same place. Might be easier to measure down so you get them in the same place.

You'll want your curtains to be able to 'stack off' the openings to either side so as not to obstruct your view. If you're concerned about dark hardware highlighting any space over the patio door, I'd suggest a brushed nickel finish that complements your darker lighting touches but doesn't repeat them here, on all the openings. It's also closer to the saturation of your wall color, so a matte, midtone metal (neither black or white hardware) won't draw they eye as a statement feature. Cheers!

Thank you. Putting below the transom is not an option. I have 2 other windows in that room which are a foot lower than where the transoms stop. To put them all at same height I would have to cover the trim of the two other windows doing exactly what picture on the left shows. My ceilings are 9'. Only way for me to put all the rods the same height would be doing the left with current curtains covering part of the trim. Or doing the one on the right having to buy new curtains.

Well it sounds like you don’t really have many options and have answered your own question. Hang them as on the right and get new curtains, seems to be the lesser of 2 evils. The option close to the ceiling is a much better look and the preferred method anyway. In looking at the pic more closely, I think visually it looks a little “off” (and not terribly so) because the crown is “closing in” the ceiling height. Not sure you want to get into removing crown, patching and painting walls and ceiling in that room just to do curtains - but that may be your only option to remedy the look. Unless you wanted to go a completely different route and go with some kind of outside mount Roman shade or top down/bottom up shade solution that mounts to the door itself. Not sure how that would look or if it would work.

Thank you this helped. I was hoping that someone would say the left was fine. Because of how little space is between the crown/trim no matter what I do is wonky. I did go ahead and place an order for longer curtains today and they should be here in a couple weeks. Have the same crown through the whole house so no won't change anything like that. Thanks again.
