My two new CL finds - Pic heavy :)

For the last year, my daughter and I have been looking for a chest of drawers for her condo bedroom. Everything we have found either smells bad, is broken and in bad shape, or is the new heavy pressed board, with small drawer space.

This is what we found on CL last weekend. It is not too old that it is in bad shape, and not too new that it poorly made and has limited drawer space. The detail on this piece is beautiful!

"Listed for $150 is a unique deep rich Walnut wood, one of a kind and seldom seen, Walnut chest of drawers that has 6 dovetail drawers."

The chest is much larger in person than it looks in these photos. Here is the description of the chest from an email about them.

" It is stamped Dixie inside for the Dixie furniture

company (later bought by Lane.) It is all wood no

cardboard like the modern stuff so my best estimate is that

it was made around 1988 or 1989, somewhere in there. It

measures 48" high and 36" wide,19" deep. Do you want pics

of inside the drawers? Let me know and I'll send them. The

drawers are all wood and dovetailed so I know it is at least 20 years old or more and this is a well made piece of furniture. Let me know if i can assist you further. Thanks"

Here it is in it's new home! My daughter is extremely happy and has had many compliments from friends. I would have shown the whole bedroom, but my daughter had not made her bed. The room is very pretty and decorated to a tee!

OK, so the story doesn't end there. :)

While picking up the piece, I spied two end tables that I had seen listed (below is the actual CL listing) but was not interested in. However, the tables were good solid pieces and a slightly modern look to them. I thought my son could use them in his apartment, so I decided to buy them if the guy would come down in price (the pair was listed for $100.) He came off $25 dollars, so I got all three pieces of furniture for $225. I think I did pretty well.

Here they are in my foyer being shown off by "Vanna White" in a snoopish way. Danish modern? I think my late mother-in-law had some of these in a pecan finish. I don't know what happened to them, but I sure didn't want them because they were not my style. These however, have a gorgeous rich finish, beautiful detailing and are solid wood.

When we got the tables home, my daughter decided that she wanted them, if she could change the hardware (which she has not done yet and will probably never get around to it.)

Well, you did it again.

I just love the chest, and while the end tables aren't my style, either (though I do have a spot where they'd be perfect), I hope she doesn't change the hardware. It just fits their style, perfectly.

Great finds! The chest is beautiful and I'm in need of some side tables very nice, too!). I'm not that far away from the Tri-City area, so I guess I need to start watching your CL! The Knoxville area hardly ever has anything.

(although childhood memories are often exaggerated.) Yet it had one or two runners running literally around a big window and back, and flowered profusely every single year for many years. I would say that no.8, though beautiful, is not an Ipomaea unfortunately but a pernicious perennial weed, Calystegia sepium. The absolutely worst weed I have in my garden. Follow the stems down and you will find long white roots which will run for miles and break if you try to pull them. Every piece will regrow. Here is a link that might be useful: Hedge bindweed

Shame on you Linda - cut that out! I do NOT need anyone enabling me - I can manage that all by myself, thank you very much! My decorative paints, brushes, craft things etc are stored in a basement studio in tall, old metal cabinets - the kind with the rounded corners. One is a glass door hutch with enamel work surface, probably an old kitchen piece. This whole Craigslist dance right now is for clearing out stuff, not acquiring more since I have an attic full that I'm trying to pare down. But I am in the market for a tall, narrow piece for my dining room. This one isn't narrow enough unfortunately. It was worth a try but looks crammed in where I need it to sit.

Ok, the room is 9'6" wide not counting the area filled by the built ins. The table is indeed oak with five legs (four corners plus one in the center) we keep the leaf in at all times because where are you going to store a leaf with a leg on it. The picture is probably a little misleading. I had the table pushed over so that I could get a clear picture of the built ins. Here are more accurate pictures of what the dining room will look like. Also I will probably have some kind of cloth on the table. The top has water rings but I don't have time to refinish it. The view from the living room in the corner of the DR view from the kitchen As you can see we have to maintain a walkway on one side of the table. We chose to move the table closer to the built ins so that the table would be centered under the light. And no DH says we can't move the box or swag with light so it is this or a semi flush mount light not centered over the table. * sigh * I love older homes but sometimes they are frustrating.

Lafonda! That's the same CL I read - Knoxville!!! I didn't realize you were in TN. I agree - our listings are awful.

Believe me...a good deal in the TRI is rare. Everyone wants "more for nothing" when it comes to furniture. Now, Chattanooga has some good deals. You are just as close to them.

On a side note, I sold my AB Lounger the other night for $50. Had it in a garage sale and it didn't even get a glance.

Wow, that chest of drawers is absolutely beautiful! Side tables aren't my style but they do look nice and fit into your daughter's area perfectly. Great CL finds!

Well the dresser is lovely but I REALLY love the little tables! Please please please don't change the hardware on the end tables! Those look like very nice midcentury pieces and you'll eliminate their collectibility if you do that! (I would have LOVED to find those since we have a lot of 50's Danish teak in our house.) Do they have any markings inside or underneath?

staceyneil - If you looked at the CL listing (in the link) you'd see that they are 60's made by Lane. They also have the dovetail drawers. I saw some similar tables by Lane listed on eBay and bidding was for, or listed at a couple hundred dollars. There was also a set that just said Danish Modern - no identification. They had 17 bids at the time I looked, and were up to over $300 for a set.

I agree with staceyneil that if you change the hardware you will reduce the value and desirability. I also feel your daughter should enjoy the tables the way she wants them to look in her decor. Please tell her to save the handles and not to throw them away if she changes them out. If she should ever decide to get rid of the tables they will have much more value and many more potential buyers, if they have the original hardware.

You got some great CL deals. You go girl!

I second dilly dally's recommendation. Really, *don't* dispose of the original beautiful hardware that looks like it goes so well with the subtle curve under the drawer at the top of the legs.

I remember those tables from Lane ads in various magazines in the 1960s ... They were just called "modern", but they are heavily influenced by the Scandinavian designers.

They had a whole line of furniture I lusted after.

Thanks! Don't worry about the drawer pulls. If my daughter changes them, I'll be sure to save the originals.

Thankfully, she likes the chest hardware.

If your daughter decides to change the drawer pulls, there is a website and catalog called Van Dykes Restorers. They have heaps of cabinet hardware and you can even search by 'boring size' which means the holes will match up. And hey, Newhomebuilder, you kindly answered a previous post of mine about Decatur Buff, and now, thanks to you and a few other lovely folks here, we will be using that color for our living/dining room. I've viewed the gorgeous photos of your home so often that I feel like a stalker, even moved them to my desktop. Can't wait to cover up the ten gallons of the BM Honeymoon mistake with Decatur Buff.
