I love your windows. In fact, your whole dining room makes me smile. How about doing Gallery Glass on your windows? I just sent a picture of my bathroom window I did to the white, white bathroom thread. Here is the top of the one I did for my son's sidelight window:

The hummingbird was super easy, fast and fun. I used the paints from windowbutterflies.com to do that one. The gal has a little video on her web site to teach you how to do it, and she's very sweet on the phone. I used the Gallery Glass from Michaels on the the bath window, and part clings and part GG on my son's window. The GG paints are best for a vertical surface; the others are best for working horizontally.

Well, I think they could handle some softening, but they're nice on their own too. I am not a decorator, so take this for what it's worth: normally I would say some simple floor-length panels might look nice, both because of the vintage of the house and the style of the furniture, but I don't know if that would work here since the cabinets are so close to the window. Maybe someone could mock something up for you? Or why not just get a different valance that you really like? The only other thing I can think of is replace the blinds with tiers, which would be softer but still allow lots of light in. (Personally, I prefer tiers when full privacy isn't required. It's amazing how much light even a white light-colored window treatment will block.)

Maybe not so much naked, as a little unfinished. Have you considered the sheer rod pocket panels as often used on French doors? Gives you opaque coverage while still admitting plenty of light. And they eliminate a heavier drapery treatment and hardware that uses up additional precious inches.

I've got them on a "door to nowhere" on my staircase turn. Used to be a shake out, but the balcony has become unsafe over the years so the door has been permanently bolted. Also have sheer panels on a set of French doors separating my front entrance hall from the main block of the house.

Is there a frame on that painting? Something wider would give it some heft on the wall. A sideboard or lowboy would be nice under it, too. One of my previous diningrooms used a long, low bookcase (5' long by 30+" high) on one wall - not exclusively for books, but as display space as well. I found that unfinished, but finished it in cherry to match the rest of the diningroom furniture.

The picture is intended to be unframed. You can't see in the picture, probably, but the sides of it are painted as well. It is on board, not canvas. I agree that it needs something under it. I feel like a bookcase would be a little too similar to my cabinets on the other side of the room, but it's a possibility.

You have a lovely room with lots of natural light and the window molding is beautiful. It doesn't look like you have space for panels given your furniture arrangement. If you were starting from scratch, I'd suggest roman shades to soften the look or a contrasting color of the shades to your trim. Just throwing out ideas here, but would painting the trim a different color be an option?

Another idea would be to use a fabric table cloth and/or chair cushions which will help to give the room a softer look and bring some texture/fabric into the room.

As for a table to ground the painting, I'd suggest looking at sofa/console tables which are generally about 16-18" deep--perhaps even a demilune table which curves in at the ends if walkway clearance is an issue.

Love your room. Sheers on the window would be a nice, lite treatment that would go w/ the airy feel I get in there. The shades there now leave me feeling cold even though you have that lovely, warm wood going on.

I love the plant stand... but not for that space. What would you put on it? I don't care for silk plants & I wonder if there is enough sun for real ones. Of course if you turned the plant stand into a bar... that would add to the eclectic look you like!

You don't really NEED anything on that wall... it's not a rule that you HAVE to fill all empty space. LOL! But if the air there bothers you, a long, narrow bookcase painted either white (to balance the rad) or stained to match the other 2 cases would be very nice. You could store your cookbooks on it! If you opted for a short case (think windowseat), you could add a pillow or a cushion for a comfy seat to look thru those cookbooks.

Bamboo blinds on the windows. Easy -- and would add casual feeling and visual texture to the room.

On the wall -- perhaps if you simply added some additional artworks to the wall?

Perhaps a lamp on the radiator cover to add another soft lighting option?
