Backsplash or no backsplash

We're doing a kitchen "refresh" with new laminate countertops. Our current laminate counters have no backsplash - just goes straight to the painted wall. At first we were going to go with post-form laminate and just the painted wall (new color) as the backsplash. But I'm really loving the idea of white subway tiles because we have white cabs and will be doing a dark counter. I'm trying to convince my hubby that it's worth it - I think it'll make the kitchen pop, and plus preserve that precious counter space that wouldn't be taken up by backsplash. It's a small kitchen, still has the stupid soffit that I'd love to get rid of but can't afford to, so would the tiled backsplash be an overkill?
