I think slate would look good with the wide plank floors. Or you could try brick - my cousin put aged-brick-look tile in the front entry of the old (1743) farmhouse that's been in our family for almost 100 yrs. They haven't refinished the floors in the rooms opening (doors) onto the entry/stairs but they have redone the wide plank pine floors upstairs with Waterlox and they look great!

A staggered slate tile would be very appropriate.

I'm considering using 6x12 slate tiles in our entry next year...dark grays/blues etc. We also have wide plank pine floors.

I agree with you, I dont think the travertine lookalike would be the best for you with what you have described. I think the slate is perfect.

Your home sounds lovely. They have tile floors that look like rustic wood.

Brick and slate both sound nice.

We just put this tile by Daltile in our powder room. It's quite inexpensive and available on the shelf at HD and Lowe's. I chose a mushroom colored grout so I never have to worry about stains.

I would put the same floor tile in all the baths, one with good slip-resistance. A white/grey marble look with pale grey grout has good dirt hiding qualities.

Plain white semi-gloss or glossy "bathroom" tiles on the tub surround walls (vary the trim bands maybe), white fixtures, brass faucets with porcelain handles, maybe beadboard wainscoting. Different color paint and accessories, but the classic white and brass says "bathroom" to me.

lazygardens that is basically what I ended up choosing today. white/gray marble looking porcelain tile; I used the same for the master shower but in my son's bath I used a plain white 6x 6 semi-gloss white tile. In the mudroom, a slate look tile. In the laundry room, I tried to do a simple black and white checkered tile, but the white wasn't brite white and I'm not sure how it will look with our brite white cabinets so we're going to get samples and see. For the guest bath, I choose a dark brown marble type porcelain with an off white porcelain in the shower broken up by a simple chair rail.

Instead of brass, I went with chrome everywhere. Let's hope it all looks okay when put together.

Consider hardwood for your bathroom floor. I put it in my master bath and I absolutley love it! I can walk on it barefoot without my feet getting cold.

I do, however, take time to put a bath mat down to step out of the shower or tub and then take it up to dry but that's minor incovenience.

Another option is to put tile around the shower/tub where you step out and hardwood everywhere else.

And, of course, kids are a different story.

kangell,that's my dream; to do hardwoods in the bathroom. But I'm doing hardwood in the kitchen for the first time as well as the powder room. I'm not feeling brave enough to do them in the bathrooms. Plus I'm not a neat, detail oriented type of gal. I love the look though.
