My approach to making an offer where I think they have some leeway is to open a conversation. I say I'm interested in such n' such, when will U be having a half off sale? Then they counter with,"We have a 4 payment plan or layaway." Then I say I have cash if the price is right, how low can U go? If they say, "We've priced it to sell & believe $600 is fair." Then I buy it! Because it is what I want & "not" a rip off price. :0) Sometimes I get 10% or told when a sale is gonna take place. Happy shopping!!!!

Is the mirror round?

The piece is probably older than 50's, most likely 30's - 40's. The mirror is square, one of those framed standing type, I don't remember if the frame folds or not. I did make an offer and the seller said the price is firm at $600. She said that in time if she needs to move pieces, she will reduce, but not right now (shop just opened). I need to decide if I want it enough to pay the $600.

If you want to bargain, you need two things: elapsed time, and a willingness to walk away. I bargain on things that have been sitting unsold on CL for a month, or in a store for two months. Then the seller will be willing to come down. But if the seller isn't convinced yet that there isn't a buyer out there who will bite at that price, they won't have any inducement to bargain, as she told you. If you really want it, then you're going to have to pay the price asked, or wait them out and risk losing it.

If it's a really cool piece, $600 may not be unreasonable, given the new upholstery and being ready to use as is.

I understand what you are saying. I don't think that the $600 price is unreasonable. I see so many great deals that people are getting on CL, etc, that when my "object of desire" appears, it happens to come with a "firm" price tag, it makes me worry that I shouldn't buy it unless I get a deal. I have to weigh the waiting and risking varibles and see where I stand. With my luck, I'd end up waiting, lose it, and then still pay about $600 for a new desk later!

Oh...and just in case...would a turquoise desk look OK in a gray room? My room is SW Steely Gray, it is a blue/gray. Here is a pic of the room. The blue chairs will be replaced with ghost chairs, there is now a black/white zebra rug that will be underneath the chairs.

Is this in an antique store? If so, around here, it is almost unheard of to not get around 10% off of most prices over $25.00. For example, this weekend my hubby and I went to an antique mall and he bought an old machinist chest for $300. It was marked $350. I usually just ask what is their best price.

Tina - is is a newly opened vintage furniture store with a sole proprietor. Yes, very much like an antique store. All items are pre-owned.

I'd take a poster size sample of your wall paint to the store and compare it to the color of the desk to see if you're happy with how it looks. Change of wall paint would be an easy fix if this is a piece that is just the right size, plus, 59"W seems unusually wide.

Do you intend to use the chair that comes with the vanity? If you've sat at it and are happy with everything else, I'd say you're making a good decision.......especially since a chair is included.
