White Cabinets, Soapstone counter, and white tile floor?

We renovated a kitchen in an old house 2 years ago and the pine floors (original) just aren't holding up. THinking about tiling with white hexagons with some sort of black pattern or border. Anyone have a picture of a kitchen with this type of floor and white shaker cabinets and soapstone counters? Tried to seach but had no luck

Sounds like you're sticking with a vintage direction for your old house. Good idea! I'm wondering if the floor scheme you describe is a bit bathroom-y? It would also bring the eye inand make your space feel smaller. Without pix, I'm just guessing...

What about gray checkerboard linoleum? It's a vintage look, completely 'green' material, and wears like iron. I'm not talking about vinyl...it's the old fashioned stuff. Good luck!

What do you mean when you say "aren't holding up"? Scratches? dents? What finish did you use on the floors? We used Land Ark oil. yesterday a clock fell off from a beam about 12 feet high. I just took a rag with a bit of the oil and covered the scratches. If you used a poly finish have you considered refinishing vs new floor.

We will be starting demolition next week on our kitchen/dining remodel. I have also chosen the Du Chateau White Antique Vernal Collection flooring which will run throughout the kitchen, dining and living areas, about 900 sq ft total. We will have white cabinets with a metallic glaze and either the White Macaubas or Madre Perola quartzite countertop (waiting to see if the Madre Perola opens up at the warehouse). It will be a white modern looking kitchen with lots of windows and glass. I chose the Du Chateau because it has a matte finish (showing less dirt/dust), it has low VOC, the ease of which you can clean stains - just rub oil into it, and the fact that the oil helps it repel water. Everyone was trying to talk me out of it as it is so expensive and it felt like it was an uphill battle at times but I persevered. No one up this far North really has it so it was a huge effort to track down samples. I have quite a reputation at the distributorship. But, I did get my way and the contractor is going to order it any day now. I would love to see pictures of it JAM_SF once you get it installed. I think the flooring will elevate the entire remodel to a casual elegance and will be the highlight of the remodel.

Thanks for the quick feedback. Well the kitchen (total counter space is about 95 sq ft) opens up to an eating area (not the formal dining room, that is in a different area) that then opens up to the great room. The great room has two deep red (wine) color walls with the rest being a neutral color, including the kitchen. I think we want to go with a clean look. (is that even a look?) Something that is classy, not retro or anything like that. ItÂs a bit hard because my wife or I have never had white cabinets so we are not sure what to do. Tomorrow we are going to look at slabs of granite. We are both thinking a darker color, say Black Labrador, Uba Tuba, or Black ImpalaÂ Do you think black is our best choice? The hardest part is that our tile is also a off white color, kinda white with a gray mixed in. Thanks for all the help.

We used a porcelain tile (I think - it may be ceramic) on the floor, using a pinwheel pattern. We didn't want a wood floor after looking at many kitchen wood floors in terrible shape during our house search. Also, we had to refinish the floors in the rest of the house and after that experience, I will never want to live through another sanding and refinishing of wood floors! The tile has a faux stone look and I still love it over a year out. I'm used to tile floors since I've always had them and the basement is quite warm beneath the kitchen, so the tiles are actually warmish. I'm too lazy to look it up, but you can do a search of my username and find my reveal with all of the details.

Hi Roxanne, I recommend using Daltile, which is a cost-effective and durable brand, that has a wide variety of options to choose from. Since your bathroom is small and you are on a budget, I recommend avoiding a busy mosaic that can visually be overwhelming in a small space and can cost more to install sometimes. A larger tile or a slab look would be nice options in the space, as they are less visually busy and can be more affordable to install. Please see the options below. I had a really, really crappy-looking oak floor. I was ready to replace it. My GC talked me out of it.

Get an estimate from a floor guy on sanding and refinishing your floor. It could be gorgeous again.

If not, and you go to tile, how about considering a warmer color than white that will marry the white cabinets and black/grey counters? You'll get more definition of the room.

Hmm, we had white tile floor with black insets in our old house. The counters were moss green granite and the cabinets were white, then later we painted them a deep ruby/burgundy color. The floor was lovely, but a lot of work. We swept and spot cleaned it constantly. It shows everything and then the grout...you think you got it clean, however, if you steam clean it, it's shocking! However, since you can see every little thing, at least it drove me to a very clean kitchen! BONUS!

I wouldn't do it again, but it was a great look. It looked clean and sharp and dramatic.

Agree with mindimoo that it might be a maintenance nightmare. You would have to choose your grout color carefully. However if you are still interested, I remember this kitchen from House Beautiful, May 2007. LOVED the floors in the cover kitchen. Here is a link to the kitchen.

White tile floor in a kitchen seems like a pain to keep clean. It also would be a pain in back to stand on. I agree, look into refinishing the wood floors. Your back will thank you.JMHO

White tile floor? You must be mad. I just replaced my almond tile floor with oak after 12 years of misery with the damn light tile floor. Every time you breathe on it, it is dirty. Within 5 minutes of cleaning it - spots and specks and it always looked filthy. Keep in mind that I am not a housekeeper.

It is hard on your feet/back; it is cold, it is misery. If you have wood floors, I second and third the suggestions on getting them refinished. They are warm and beautiful and timeless; easy to keep, and don't show anything. They will be drop-dead gorgeous with a sanding and 4 coats of water-based Traffic or Bono polyurethane. Trust me.

Don't do it; too much of a bathroom look. If the pine floors are beyond help, you may want to have new hardwood floors installed. If wood is not to your taste, I like flyingcarrot's suggestion, but don't get white tile.

Jkemner - It sounds like a lovely combination, but I have to agree with the others regarding the maintenance of a light tile floor. I just had mine installed a few months ago and thought it would be great because my room is so dark and I clean the floors so frequently anyway. I was so wrong! The above commenters are correct that it is a constant battle to keep the floors clean looking. My worst peeve is that a single drop of water on the floor will get smeared by a shoe or dirty foot and it shows.

It will look lovely when clean, but that will be rare. I have a white tile floor in my bathroom, with a blue hexagon pattern, and I love the way it looks. But it is always dirty. Every piece of hair, every speck of sand or dust, a drop of water - everything shows up.

Our previous house had white tile floor in the kitchen. It was a nightmare! I was constantly cleaning it (and this was before we had kids). I would not recommend it in a kitchen.

If you're staying with vintage flooring, check into Marmoleum. I put it in my 1922 kitchen last summer, and I love it. Easy to stand on, a dream to keep clean, wonderful texture, a zillion colors, and you can do borders and insets too if you want. You need to have a Marmoleum installer put it in, not just any floor installer, but it's worth it. And Marmoleum is a green (ecologically green that is!) product. It's boiled linseed oil and sawdust, but it's tough as nails. The color goes all the way through, so it doesn't wear badly. I expect this floor to be here in 40 years.
