Calling People with Walnut Wood Counters!!!

I am concerned about howwood top is going to age. I'm hoping I can get some answers from people who have lived with their walnut wood countertops for a while.

Have you noticed a change in your walnut wood countertop over time?

is it supposed to get lighter? darker?

Does the finish you put on it make a difference with the change?

Help! Thanks in advance!

I've only started using mine, but I've researched walnut and finishes so I'd be prepared for maintenance. If you do a google search for "gardenweb walnut islands" you will find many threads of members experiences with wear and finishes. Wood will scratch, so the finish definitely effects how much the scratches show. If you go with a more rustic finish the scratches will blend in better. I was initially going to do a low sheen satin finish as Craftart recommends, but I ran out of steam trying to get that finish just right. As you saw from my pix, mine is pretty glossy right now and scratches do show if the light is just right. Products make a difference also. Waterlox takes a very long time to completely cure. I made the mistake of giving my pup a bath in my sink. Even though I had the wood covered in towels, my pup managed to scratch it. I'm not worried about it though, as my island must be useful and it did work great for bathing my big pup.

Remember, scratches can be repaired with a light sanding and another coat (depends on the finish product you choose) and I figure I'll just scuff and add another coat of waterlox at some point.

I believe the wood can get lighter if in full sun and from what I read on Waterlox, the finish will dull in time which is the other reason I stuck with the original finish.

Hopefully, some of the many GWers with walnut will chime in with their experiences.

I've been enjoying my black walnut island counter for almost three years. My woodworker favors Osmo Polyx Oil for his counters so I trusted his experience despite wanting Waterlox like so many others here have used. I love the Osmo for how natural the counter looks and feels. It doesn't feel like there's any kind of coating on it. The color of my counter hasn't changed that I've noticed. The finish is a beautiful satin.

Based on all I've read here and my almost three years of use, here is what I know about the differences between Osmo and Waterlox.

-Osmo can be touched up in any spot at any time (or the whole counter can be re-coated at any time) because the Osmo doesn't coat the wood like Waterlox. Re-applying Osmo is simple. Wipe on and wipe off. No sanding required. Waterlox needs to be sanded first. You can, however, give an Osmo counter a sanding in any spot at any time and wipe more Osmo over the area.

-The color of the wood remains the same with Osmo. Waterlox "ambers" the wood, giving it a yellow-ish tint.

-I have many scratches on my counter. The reason I posted the photo of my counter with the cat is to show one of the main scratch culprits. She, her sister, and mother like to party on the counter when the two-legged family is asleep. It seems that Waterlox scratches less because of the thick coating it provides. Again, though, these scratches can be sanded at any time.

-Waterlox needs multiple coats with special skill to apply it to avoid the little bubbles on the surface. Osmo is a wipe on, wipe off application.

-Waterlox needs a lengthy curing time to harden. An Osmo counter can be used almost immediately after a re-application. For the initial treatment, Osmo does need a couple of days to cure.

-Osmo isn't very water resistant. Water left in one spot for more than a few minutes means that the wood absorbed some water. A ghost spot will remain for a small amount of time (could be 10 minutes or could be an hour depending) after wiping. Waterlox will not absorb water left on it like that. This all means that I need to be vigilant with drips and projects involving lots of water to make sure I wipe regularly.

Feel free to ask any questions. Despite the scratches and dents, I still love my walnut and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Hey there babs. Wood with marble ....YUM! Go for it! We did Bianco Antico perimeter (chickened out on marble) and Mahogany top for our island and yes, made by a local small town custom wood worker. I paid $710 for our top. I have no idea how many sq ft it is but guessing around 30-35.... we quoted me for maple (or was it oak...can't remember now, which ever is the hardest!) and then he realized I wanted a darker top then that wood could provide, so he gave me the mahogany at the same price because he had it on hand. Lucky me! I chose to have it finished with a sealer vs oil....whatever sealer he uses, not sure what its called. He did tell me mahogany was about a 6 on the hardness scale of wood (10 being hardest). I wanted walnut based on all the beauties I have seen on GW, but it would have cost me more and I felt like I was already getting a deal by getting mahogany for the price of maple / oak. Truthfully, I an really happy with what we have. I get a lot of compliments on it. But then again, while its often seen on here, NO ONE in our area has anything like it. I did have him tint it/stain it so it would be less red than what mahogany is. Durability....it has only been in since the first week of December, so early to say. NO dings of any sort, but fine hairline scratches. I use this all the time, I do all my prep work on it, when I should be doing it on the granite. I suppose had we chose the oiled option they would be less noticeable, but they aren't noticeable from a distance, just up close or from the right angle. If you are considering marble, I would venture to say these wouldn't bother you. You can't feel them with your hand, just see them, they are that hairline fine. I did call to get a quote from a place in Michigan that ships anywhere. He was a bit more reasonable in price, but it seemed more sensible to have a local guy do it in case we had any problems. Yowza! That is expensive! Ours was bundled with our cabinets, but that is a high price. We have a black walnut plank top on a 9' island. I think it was around 2k max for it. Apparently there was a lot of waste too because all the boards had to be long and there was lots of sapwood, etc. in the order. As far as the color choices go, my builder likes Velvit, rather than waterlox (more of a matte finish, less of a tabletop finish). We had him sample natural, special walnut and dark walnut. They looked almost identical. The walnut is very dark as is. We went with dark but I might switch to natural or special down the road as I use it (needs to be refinished - my builder said every 6 months or so to build it up). The dark walnut is dark but fine for my super white, marble kitchen. FYI - CraftArt is great and very high end. They are in the area in Atlanta which sells mostly to interior designers and they have a very high end clientele. I have heard nothing but great things about them and if you can do the DIY one it will be beautiful I think!

Once I get a door sample, I will try it with the Torquay. There is a Cambria warehouse about 2 hours from here, so I can go look at slabs if I like the sample. I have to decide if I like the quartz as its own thing - I don't want to feel like I bought "fake marble." I do like the subtlety of the Torquay pattern in the pictures, but I really would like to get a little color in this kitchen, preferably some blue or green, and I don't know how to tie that in with the Torquay. The appliances are stainless steel. The porcelain floor tiles will be selected after the counters. I expect they will be a lighter shade in a very large format (i.e., 12x24, 24x24, 24x48 or something in that range). I am attaching a CAD of the layout. The island shape is something my designer friend was playing with. I expect the island will probably go back to being a 4'x8.5' rectangle, but the choice of slab may impact the choice of shape. There is a large amount of open wall space on the back wall around the range, so the choice of backsplash is very important. I feel like I need pattern in either the counters or BS - having both be solid colors just seems too stark to me. My original color plan was walnut cabinets, blue and white Namibia Sky counters, slightly iridescent white mosaic BS tiles, light blue paint on walls chosen to complement counters. Now that I am afraid of using the marble counters, I need a new plan. I saw a kitchen I liked on DIY that had a solid off white quartz counter and a mosaic backsplash that mixed green, SS and the off white of the counter. Of course, that kitchen had espresso cabinets with no visible grain pattern. I am worried about having a large BS with a pattern that competes with the walnut grain, which is why I thought it would be safer to go with a counter with movement and a solid color BS. I like the idea of using back painted sheets of glass for the BS, but I understand that is quite expensive and I can't splurge on every item!

Do you know who makes those cabinets? Info on the pic says they were custom made. But you can use this picture as an inspiration picture. Start looking through your yellow pages for custom cabinet makers. Also ask friends where they got their cabinets. If you are looking at big box stores, I would say Kraft Maid from Lowe's would be a good choice. However, price out custom, there are many on here who got custom for the same price or less as big box. And do you live near an Amish area? Some on here have gotten great custom Amish cabs at great prices. Again, ask around. And if you do a search on here, lots of very happy Ikea cabinet owners. It shouldn't be hard to find what you are looking for. Also, where would I find solid surface counter tops? Lowe's sell's LG Hi-Mac and Home Depot sells Corian around here. There are other brands as well. (Joseph Corlett could list them all, I don't know them all, as I am focused on Corian myself) Again, try looking at kitchen and flooring shops in your area. You can also go to the website of any brand and they should have a dealer locater. Now Joseph will say they are all the same. Maybe they are, but all I can say is, in researching (an insane amount) LG Hi-Mac "seems" to have an awful lot of cracking issues. Corian use only their trained fabricators so maybe that's why there are less issues. Thank you so much for the great suggestion and for the photos.
