Do Big-box appliance stores provide savings??

We're getting ready to purchase a new range, and refrigerator for the kitchen remodel. We live in a rural area, and I was wondering if Best Buy might offer a more competitive price or perhaps the smaller stores will on appliances?? Any suggestions on best prices in appliances?

Just ask them what they charge, and remember to compare delivery as well. Sometimes they will price match. Sears can have some pretty good sales and are worth watching too.

I have found that Sears outlet's can be fabulous
scratch and dent or overstock stuff
I got some floor models which had some scratches on the parts that are hidden (sides and back) but at an amazing price, brand new and under warranty
They often have boxed items as well
of course hte choice keeps changing and you may not be able to get a specific model

Two calls for an ice maker in a year doesn't seem extreme, but if the ice maker isn't repaired after the second call and the leak has the potential to cause damage to your cabinets or flooring, they might consider replacing it. I have found Lowe's to be reasonable. If you just have cold feet and are worried about future problems, you might ask them to extend the warranty to assure you that the problem will get a lasting repair at no cost to you.

Katie, I just bought mine from Lowe's. I was leary of Sears because I heard their extended warranties were so expensive. I probably could have gotten a better deal someplace else but my husband was getting on my case about buying a washing machine. If you have axcess to a military exchange you can get a great deal!!! I remember somebody saying Best Buy was running a deal too. I got my washer and dryer for right around $2000.00 with the 5 yr extended warranties. I will get a rebate check for the delivery. I liked that they hauled away my old set. Make sure you get the more expensive stainless steel hoses for your washing machine ($22.00) and a good dryer vent. The extra cost is worth it in the long run from everything I've read. Also, you should get a rebate for around $200.00 worth of free laundry detergent and dryer sheets if you buy both the washer and dryer. That comes from Whirlpool. I have the cabrio without the agitator. So far I really like it. I can do double the wash I did before. There are a few things I have noticed. Some of the clothes do come out more wrinkled and they are hard on bras. I'm going to try washing them in a special garment bag next time. Good Luck!! Carlee

Markup is a part of life desert dance ! Why are you so averse to paying it? What you should focus on is are you getting fair value for the price you are being charged on the product or service you are buying. BTW - all retail IS NOT marked up 3 times. Sometimes its only once depending on the distribution channel, and if you are talking about percentages , some things are only marked up 10-20% like appliances ! Also consider that " markup"allows you to walk into the Depot and browse their selection on tile, cabinet doors, countertops, and appliances for free. All those displays , lighting, brochures, rent, costs $$$. Now , you can easily find an outfit with lower overhead which might translate into lower markup, and it might not. You'll drive yourself crazy trying sort out all the costs that go into a renovation budget on top of the design decisions that need to be made. Do you question your mechanic's markup on oil or bolts when you get an oil change? You could save a lot of money if he bought all his oil when it was on closeout or March Madness sale at walmart instead of his regular supplier. How about the fees your broker/ IRA/ 401k charge to administer your retirement plan. And other accounts? Ever hire an attorney and seen what you are charged for a copy or a postage stamp? It's easy to nitpick pricing - there IS ALWAYS someone/where with a lower price. Why dont you tell us what business / industry company you or your spouse work in and let us compared its pricing with the rest of the market.

"Can I haggle the price even after " you're kidding right? The big boxes were founded on the principle that the middle was squeezed out and offer the lowest price everyday. If you still want to play used car haggle a deal turkish bazaar you should go to a specialized kitchen dealer where there is more fat on the bone to haggle about. Even then you run the risk of actually cutting muscle instead of fat. Most of the time at the boxes the promotions are underwritten by the factory not the store so the deals are still pretty inflexible. If you want a lower price YOU are going to have to give up something: cheaper wood species/finish, fewer drawers, install it yourself, ect...

Labor day is around the corner - check out advertisements as they come out. Appliances typically go on sale around these holiday's.

Sears can be good, hhgreg if you have it might be worth a visit since they're kinda the opposite of best buy - more appliances, less electronics. If you got a local store you like, don't discount them either.

A lot of places will price-match competitors. Additionally, some places (Lowes is one) will continue to price match for a little while after your purchase. This got me money back - so pay attention to prices even after your purchase.

Thanks for your responses, I'm new here and the help is greatly appreciated!! We live 1.5 hours away from the bigger stores, and so far the smaller stores have not budged on their prices, with the economy the way it is, you think they would.
I have been looking at Sears online, I have never owned Kenmore.

Sears carries "regular" brands besides Kenmore and in fact Kenmore isn't really a brand - all of the appliances are manufactured by other companies, e.g. Whirlpool, Electolux, etc. to Sears specifications.

I forgot to mention that the online prices were better than the in-store price (of the same store). So you can price-watch at home. You may also want to make sure they deliver to your area or have stock for pickup with whoever your purchase from in case you live outside of their delivery area.
