What kind of discounts do the big box stores offer?

I'm more than likely going to go with Kraftsmaid cabinets. Lowes is running a 10 percent instant savings stacked with another 10 percent discount, so it is a little less than 20 percent off. I was wondering what Lowes and Home Depot usually offer and what/when is the best discount offered. Can I haggle the price even after discounts? If so, how much were you able to reduce the price after discounts?

you're kidding right?

The big boxes were founded on the principle that the middle was squeezed out and offer the lowest price everyday. If you still want to play used car haggle a deal turkish bazaar you should go to a specialized kitchen dealer where there is more fat on the bone to haggle about. Even then you run the risk of actually cutting muscle instead of fat.

Most of the time at the boxes the promotions are underwritten by the factory not the store so the deals are still pretty inflexible.

If you want a lower price YOU are going to have to give up something: cheaper wood species/finish, fewer drawers, install it yourself, ect...

As a side note, I would advise you to shop your KM order around to smaller cabinet dealers or the lumber store also. Don't automatically assume that the big box stores have the cheapest prices. I have found that they rarely do.

I've never paid much attention to classic (or new) HTs at the box stores, of which they carried quite a few, but our local HD carried several OGRs when I still lived in the US. In my first rose growing year in the US, not knowing any better, I purchased one Reine des Violettes, two Rose de Rescht, two Comte de Chambord, one Sombreuil and one modern, Altissimo from them. All true to type except for Sombreuil which turned out to be Cl. Iceberg, certainly an intentional mislabeling. Only one, Altissimo, was clearly virused, as it turned out in its second year. While it performed very well, it couldn't hold a candle to the, I'm quite sure, non-virused Altissimo I bought the next year from DA and planted right next to it. In later years, I had the impression that Reine des Violettes might have been virused too, since some leaves on one, only one, of its lowest branches showed a pattern that could have been RMV, but it wasn't an entirely clear positive. I am not sure about the claim that an RMV infection may not even show at all, not even faintliest. To me such claims sound like "guilty by default (or association) without proof", and as a historian, I have problems with this kind of approach. However, I know that biology (which I've also studied way back then) is not politics or history, and I'd like to see some scientific literature on this. Jeri, do tou have anything at hand? Gary, One thing to keep in mind with orchids at the big boxes is many are, for the money, a better deal than buying cut flowers because they last so much longer. I do that, knowing that I know very little about keeping it alive or getting it to rebloom after it finally peters out. I just stick them in the boot of the palm tree out back and once in a blue moon fertilize them. And several have died out there, but one rebloomed for me recently. I felt like I doubled my money on that little very common purple and white dendrobium. I do the same thing with the little broms with the spectacular flowers (or whatever brom's non-flower flowers are called.) After several weeks, the flowers die and I plant them in the ground. I've had several of those rebloom too, and I'm even bringing pups and big divisions to the swap. They're not fancy, but for the $8 I paid, I got a lovely flower in the kitchen window for weeks, and if I get more, wow, yippee! I also think the orchids make much nicer hostess gifts than showing up with a bunch of cut flowers. If the hostess can't keep it alive to rebloom, he or she will at least get to enjoy the nice spray of flowers for much longer than cut flowers will last. (so when you see me at HD, don't bother to counsel me on my brom and orchid buys... just all the other stuff I might buy and potentially kill or hate!) As for the in-store kills, I saw a massacre in the making yesterday. Someone should go to the K-Mart in Miami Shores and convince the manager to sell them all the broms and orchids for cheap. They lost the shade covering in Fay and everything there is burned looking and won't last much longer. I thought about talking to him or her, but I don't know enough about orchids to think that even if they were heavily discounted, I could keep enough of them alive and get them to rebloom to make it worth it. susannah

Brocks! We're heading down there and to Dearborn Farms tomorrow. To be honest, I shop all over. We bought 12 boxed roses at Dearborn Farms last spring, but I got some really nice potted roses in Lowe's (Woodbridge, Jersey City, and Old Bridge) and Wal-Mart (Secaucus, Cinnamonson, and Old Bridge) -- all of them did really well, and have leafed out like crazy this spring. Like you, I've been buying Superthrive at Wal-mart (it's not out yet, and I don't have all that much left right now -- and not every store had it, either) as well as fish emulsion. We got some great annuals there to fill in the gaps in the plants we bought in Van Wingerden's and Gro-Rite up in Lincoln Park. I get potting soil for my containers and garden soil to beef up the beds in Lowe's, and I get mulch there, too. I get pots and little plastic garden fencing in Wal-Mart. Home Depot was disappointing last year, especially since we'd gotten some wonderful roses there in the past (in Clifton and Woodbridge). But Clifton's garden center has gone -way- downhill, and Woodbridge isn't what is used to be. But none of them compare to Hoverman's, now sadly closed.

I have no personal opinion on this, but I have heard of people who have had their orders completely messed up by the HD/Lowes people, and it takes weeks to straighten out. That's probably one of the things you get with a window professional. Also, when I did my windows, both reps (from window stores) could immediately tell me when a window needed to be tempered glass, and when it had to be a fire escape compliant window. My architectural designer missed one of those...the window guy basically had to change that window to be compliant. My friend's architect missed one or two of the tempered windows. It's just like anything else...if you know what you're doing, and are OCD about double checking everything, then you're probably fine. If you're like me, and burnt out after trying to save money with an architectural designer, and want your actual build to be smoother, then you work with professionals, and hold them accountable when the order isn't right. In our area, prices are marked up quite a bit. By getting quotes from people 40-60 minutes away, the prices were much more comparable with the big boxes...good luck!

I was looking for general discounts. The discounts were different today. They are only offering 10 percent. Yesterday, I could have received 10 percent from KM and 10 percent from Lowes. I haven't been looking at prices long, so I didn't know if they offered 20 percent sometimes or rebates (gift card) offers during other promotions. I think I remember them offering that deal earlier in the year. They also offer free sink bases etc. There are discounts out there. I'm debating on whether it is worth it to wait.

Has anyone tried to stack a 10 percent mover's coupon on top? I was able to do this on another promotion for flooring. I guess it depends on the sales associate.

i used one of those 10% off coupons with our last kitchen. Can't remember if we combined it with something else or not. Usually HD has that 'buy more save more' deal - like $4k off $20k or more. Lowe's right now has deals on Shenandoah. But breezygirl is right - you will find cheaper, possibly better made cabs elsewhere. HD wanted $16k(after $4k off) for Thomasville, and that was with me choosing a cheaper door, no plywood, no pull outs, etc... Local cab guy quoted me a little less than $12k for all plywood Kabinart in the most expensive door style w/upgraded drawers, etc....Don't know where you are but Just Cabinets in PA has Kraftmaid cheaper than the big boxes.
