would you consider soapstone to be traditional, transitional...
Comments (6)I agree w/ happytobehome. I've seen soapstone look perfect in the most traditional of kitchens in 100 year old houses, and in very contemporary spaces. My kitchen is transitional-leaning-contemporary and I think the soapstone is perfection with it. Because I have cherry shaker cabinets, I could make my kitchen look relatively traditional with just a few changes: hood, barstools, lighting, faucet, possibly backsplash. Here is mine for a look at soapstone in transitional space: Anita...See MoreTraditional Decor in a contemporary house?
Comments (7)We've had a 1939 art moderne home & a mid-century modern home. We never had the $$$ to buy period-appropriate furniture for the homes, but we were able to make our traditional furniture work. We kept wall colors light and the decor mostly monochromatic to emphasize the architecture. No fussy fabrics on the upholstered pieces; we used solids to emphasize the furniture shape. Window treatments were minimal as well: blinds that rolled out of view & added an architectural element when lowered. The windows were very large, so we made sure the views were the wow factor in the rooms. We did have one art deco lyre-shaped console that was visually strong enough to anchor a room & add a modern element. A traditional sofa, chairs, and an oriental rug rounded out the room. We also had traditional dining furniture and an antique mirror. We had lots of compliments on how the traditional furniture worked well in the houses. It was a refresshing change-up from the expected. So I guess in a nutshell, emphasize architecture, windows, furniture shapes & space instead of fussy prints, pictures, & accessories....See MoreDining room- more transitional, less traditional??
Comments (73)I like moody colors for dining rooms too, but I think this one can have that on the walls and go with the lighter chandelier ( I am faviring the capiz and you have said several times you love it). The capiz is not clear like crystal and you only need to do crystal once or twice a year -- and some folks say they do quick cleanings of those with a blast of compressed air (in a can, sold with office/computer supplies). I replaces a brass and porcelain chandelier that I thought needed rewiring (discovered some loose fittings when we went to take it down -- opps!) with a crystal chandelier. I get lab fur everywhere on the floors, but have never noticed a single hair at light fixture level -- even on the crystal. I think as long as the dog doesn't dance onthe table, you will be fine. If you love something, come back to it a couple of times adn it is still singing your song, I think that is the one you should go with. That's how it works for me. Have you done a mock up -- paste the photo of the chandeliers into the photo of your dining room. I had to do that with my kitchen island fixture so DH could "see" it, and there is a help me pick a chandelier thread going now -- I think it really helps sometimes....See MoreContemporary, traditional, country, modern? Comments (15)I'd just say beautiful!! Great job!! Your kitchen reminds me of my new master bath I'm putting together. Long time ago I saw some gorgeous light fixtures I had to have and they are over the top beautiful crystal and nickle and modern. I spent so much on lighting fixtures that wnen it came time for the cabinets/vanities I tried to find a way to save money. So I opted for some inexpensive, yet very nice vanities that are more of an antique style. Then we come to the flooring and shower. Well, the shower is now going to be glass block, which I believe is pretty generic when it comes to style, and the flooring is porcelain tile in a beige stone look. The walls are a gray/green/blue. So I'm holding my breath waiting to see what all these different elements look like when they are all in place in the same room. If nothing else, I'll just tell people it's shabby/chic!! My poor DH who doesn't know that much about interior design keeps reassuring me it will all look beautiful. I do so want to believe him!! That's what I'm going on right now and hoping for the best. Your kitchen is fabulous!!...See MoreRelated Professionals
