Flooring Suggestions - Kitchen, Family Room, Pool entrance

Well, I'm back to the drawing board. My installer looked at the travertine I thought I'd use, and said he felt it might not be good enough quality to use in such high traffic areas. Our budget won't allow for a premium travertine, $7/SF and up.

My questions:

How risky is it to use hardwood in the possible "wet areas" like the kitchen and a pool-entry room? The family room has french doors that open to the screened porch off the pool area. There is another entrance to a shower/sauna in the garage, but my guess is the kids will be begging for snacks, etc from the family room door. I don't want to stress about water on the floor all the time. But I love the look, feel and warmth of wood.

Has anyone seen a reasonably priced wood-look tile?

I'm also drawn to the versailles pattern stone-look porcelain. Has anyone used one that is pretty convincing?
