Pental Quartz vs. Silestone? Any pros cons to either brand?

I had almost decided on Silestone "Gris Expo" but at the showroom, the sample of it next to Pental Quartz "Stormy Sky" looks identical.

I wish I brought both samples home to be sure in my light but seriously in all light at the showroom they were identical.

Pental Quartz is $10/sq ft. cheaper than the Silestone.

Are there any reasons to go with Silestone over Pental?

Could they possibly be identical or are there likely some variations I cant detect in the samples? The Pental sample was big, 12x12

I have Pental and am extremely happy with it. I have Coastal Grey which is slightly darker than your color.

I think Pental is less well-known because they only serve certain markets currently, and because they changed their name a couple years ago.

I don't think you'll find any quality difference. I would make your decision based on finding the pattern you like.

The only other thing I would say is to, regardless of provider, inspect each slab before buying it. Any reputable dealer would accept a return if you find any imperfection, but if you inspect first it would save you the transportation hassle in the unlikely event of either an imperfection or crack.

Pentalquartz (formerly Chroma) is Vicostone, made in Vietnam, which may account for the lower price. Vicostone sells to other granite companies as well as Pental.

I started with Caesarstone in my remodel last year, but it was damaged on install. My Buttermilk slabs had resin pooling, so I switched to Pentalquartz Botticino because I could view my slabs at their Portland warehouse.

The Pental slabs looked fine in the warehouse and at the fabricators. On install, we saw faint circles of all sizes in the countertop, as if it had etched. It took months for the Portland warehouse manager to come out and look at the problem. By then, all gradually disappeared except for a 5 gallon sized circle near the sink. He tried cleaning and buffing, but I can still see it in certain light. He said he'd talk to the owner of Pental about some kind of compensation and get back to me. He never did. That was last spring.

I don't know if the marks came in the manufacturing process or from the fabricators. The Pental guy could not think of anything that would cause such marks. He talked about how the Chinese cut corners by curing their quartz at lower temperatures, and it spends less time in the curing ovens, so the resins don't achieve the same hardness and durability. But Vicostone does cure properly, and they also use the Breton equipment to manufacture their quartz. China just steals the technology.

In the end, it's beautiful and we're happy with it, despite a faint can mark. Not so happy with the customer service of Pental.

No engineered stone is approved for UV exposure. It’s not an industry secret at all. None can go outside. Period. If your professionals that you worked with had done their jobs, you’d be an educated consumer and know that it’s not an exclusion just for Cambria. Direct sun from standard new windows shouldn’t pass enough UV to damage your floors, furniture, or e-stone. Standard windows already come with UV blocking properties, so if yours are so old that they don’t have it, you’ve got other issues about UV exposure in your house. Old windows need UV blocking film installed to avoid degradation to all kinds of interior finishes. Not just your e-stone. If it’s a relatively new window, that’s a conversation that you need to have with your window manufacturer. It’s defective. This is Not on Cambria. Or Silestone. Or Pental. Or Zodiaq. Or any e-stone manufacturer. New windows shouldn’t have issues with transmitting enough UV to damage your home.. Poop happens. This isn’t on Cambria. Talk to your window manufacturer.

@SaraDixon- if you are having a person that works FOR Cambria coming, it means two things. #1- your stone was sold to you (and perhaps fabricated) by a certified Cambria dealer. and #2- you'll be in great hands. We've sold Cambria for many years and have had one maybe two small issues (a spec of wrong color in the stone). Not only were the issues handled timely (even during a holiday), each customer was thoroughly impressed and satisfied. Cambria personnel is expertly trained and stand 100% behind their product. You also have to understand that Cambria is the manufacture of material. There are other elements at play here- like the fabricator/installer/designer. I wish you the best of luck with your issue Sara! But if Cambria is coming, you don't need it. As for potential Cambria customers, you should all know that since September 2018 they now have a LIFETIME Warranty. This is a warranty that can be passed down to new homeowners if you ever sell your house and the warranty covers any sort of bill that may be inquired during the warranty process (plumber, contractor etc) You can read more about this warranty here: https://www.cambriausa.com/customer-care/warranty/ No other quartz company has a warranty like this. We have sold and do sell other quartz manufacturers, but Cambria no doubt is the best (not only because it is made in the USA, and because of their phenominal warranty) but because of what you get for the money. You'll spend more on Silestone, Zodiaq and Ceasarstone and you won't have the same color options, or even quality in some cases, for the price.

I just had the same thing happen to me with Della Terra Vittoria White quartz from AZ Tile. Manufactured by santamargarita. I am sick over the result. If I had known it could vary this much I would have tried to get a dyelot # from our bathroom counter install just a few months prior. (Or chosen something else!) I thought since we had our sample (and one full counter installed that matched said sample) that we knew what this would look like. I am really disappointed. Our bathroom counter is a true white with beautiful veining and depth variation if you look closely. The kitchen counter slabs have sparse veining and have an overall grey, almost rosy undertone. It looks like a mottled pattern with some veining instead of a veined counter with some mottling. And they are an entirely different shade. The kitchen counters wash out against our wall and backsplash and almost have a pink hue when viewed next to the white cabinets. If it's a known quantity that there is this little consistency, they should be required to provide a sample from the dye lot you are purchasing. And insist that customers preview the slabs before finalizing the sale. I like everyone else was told that quartz was consistent and that was unnecessary. I pulled the trigger on this remodel because I wanted to love it. It's not reasonable to expect customers to be expert enough to head this off.

HI joshua123, The kitchen tile is from Pratt & Larson. It is a custom waterjet mosaic piece in marble. The color is a dark grey with a lot of variation. the exact color is bardiglio. the white boarder and interior boarded are snow white marble. kathy and Micah at pratt & lason were extremely helpful finding exactly what I wanted for our kitchen. I'll have to post a couple more pictures from a sunny day, as the ones I have posted dont really reflect the real colors. as far as style and mosaics being dated or not, I'm a firm believer that you should go with what you love and what speaks to you. you are going to be living in the house and walking into that kitchen every day. I dont think our kitchen mosaic looks dated at all, but I'm also not a designer. I can tell you it makes me happy when I walk in to make my morning coffee in that room. I did consider using more of that tile to cover the entire backspace area from the cooktop to the hood, as diana illustrated in some of her photos, to really give it a more modern look, but it was too expensive to justify in this house.

Mayflowers, are you still in the same house with your Pental quartz? How is it holding up? Any follow through on the circles? Who was your fabricator? Thanks! Looking to buy quartz for my kitchen in Portland...

There aren't any more circles. As for the 5 gallon can circle, I'm sure my fabricator set a can of acetone on it and etched it. I should have followed through with them instead of Pental. I didn't because you have to know it's there to see it and I wasn't going to have the counters replaced again. So I would recommend Pentalquartz. I've had no other problems in the five years that I've had it.

I used Elite Granite in Hillsboro. I'm not sure if they still do counters. The business was originally a granite headstone company and they seem to have expanded that part of the business. They weren't finding much profit in countertops the last time we talked to them.
