Paint color off in my newly painted bathroom

This past weekend we finally got our master bathroom painted. We decided on BM Coventry Gray. The painter put on 2 coats with BM Ben paint with no primer as the wall had off-white builder grade flat on it. It came out great but the wall color is definitely reading more blue than gray (see link and compare to my sample) and not a true gray. My question is why the noticeable discrepancy? Does it need another coat?

No, I don't believe it needs another coat. You didn't need a primer and two coats is sufficient.

I tested Coventry Gray for my husband's office and it looked very blueish gray to us too. When you did your test swatches, did you do two coats? I surround my test swatch with white copy paper so the existing wallcolor doesn't influence how it looks to my eye. I wouldn't think off-white would trick your eye though but maybe.

I'm glad you like it. It's a pretty and popular shade.

Thank you all. This is very helpful. The general consensus is that it is a badly done job. gzec: The bathroom was added. Green board was used appropriately. The bathroom was painted but we did not like the color. We think that the contractor just quickly plastered the new color on. The contractor is completely out of the picture so we are on our own for this one! handymac: turns out that the side vent was not possible because it would have snaked up and down, which would have made it ineffectual. handymac and sdello: You both are confirming my though: a well primed wall with proper bathroom paint will not peel. Plus, it's not exactly steam bath conditions! So we'll have to get to work. Thank you all

Thank you again to all the people who commented on this post! I wanted to share the "after" picture. I chose Mindful Gray by SW. I tried so many colors, and many grays, and this seemed to work the best. I moved the light fixture higher on the wall and bought a new, larger medicine cabinet from Pottery Barn (I had a gift card and put it to good use). I also installed 2 high hat ceiling lights. I'm very happy with the outcome....overall its not perfect but definitely better than where I started without spending more than a few hundred dollars.

A warm off white would look very nice and was my initial thought. It's often my first thought for wall colour these days and I hesitate to suggest it because I worry it's a cop out of some kind. :P Get a test sample jar/can of whatever you're considering and paint it on a few inexpensive art canvas boards so you can try it out on all walls. Take your time to see the colour throughout a sunny and gloomy day's light.

I'm sure both concepts could look good. I would go with a blue-green, but this is just my personal preference. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here. However, I don't know if Niebla Azul is going to be the right blue. Since you are going to have beige elements in the room I would consider leaning more green. NA looks like it would be too cool. You need to sample in your light, against the finishes you've chosen in order to know which is the right color.

Yes my test color had two coats. We plan to change the lighting out (broadway lights) so maybe that will help. Regardless, it is a pretty color and goes well with our decor.
