You can't find that upholsterer because it costs tons of money and most customers snort at us and say "I could get 2 new chairs for that price!". Yes, you can.

For a really good seat, the chair base has eight-way tied springs, and then a down-cotton wrapped spring unit in the seat. This is massive re-upholstery. It takes hours to tie the deck springs. It takes hours more to construct a spring cushion.

You can certainly find an upholsterer to do this, if you look long enough. I do it often. I never advertise anymore, because I don't need to. Ask at a local upholstery supply store.

I don't do it much anymore, because no-one is willing to pay the price. They quail at the price of foam cushions! Many expect the price of RE-upholstery to be less than new furniture. It's not.

We have to spend hours stripping the old crap off, sneezing and coughing from the dust, old food crumbs, the occasional dentures, vacuuming up the old staples and tacks, disposing of old stuffing and fabric (garbage cost here).

Good upholsterers do not work for minimum wage. Many hours go into each piece, and it costs far more than a new piece. I think you need to look a bit further up than Calico Corners for an upholsterer.

Even on a chair with a very short height deck, tied deck springs are possible, but the S-springs are adequate. The spring units for the cushions are available in many depths. It just a matter of wrapping them, squashing the crap out of them, shoving them in the cover, and attempting to sew it shut.

Can you tell I was trying to close one today? LOLOL. Customer did NOT want a zipper. /sometimes hate customers.

I do thank you for the explanation. I have no high end re-upholsterers. I've only used the one guy ( with help, I expect) operations. I went to Calico Corners NOT for their(out-sourced) upholsterer, but because they once had a see through cushion and explanation of their cushion with spring and down blend. I'll search some more and then weigh the added cost. Since the chairs were not originally "sprung":>) in either the deck or the cushion, I'll probably not go that route if it's that much more.($approx.400.00 per chair for the labor).
