Inside or outside mount for roller shades?

I am looking at some natural fiber roller shades from Country Curtains for two bedrooms that are upstairs. I'm not sure whether to do an inside or outside mount. I will not be using window treatments with these as they are small dormer windows. What would you recommend? Thanks.

Outside will allow you to clear the window better than inside mount. But outside mount will cover any woodwork on the window so it won't show.

Inside mount will expose the woodwork around the window all the time, adding an extra band of color to the space, but it will block more of the window.

Up to you...either works.

I prefer inside mount for looks but almost always end up with outside mount for practical reasons.

We need to install outside mount blinds in our den, kitchen and bedrooms as there is no room to do inside (old house built in 1964). I had 3 Day Blinds out today and do not like their valences. Our style is modern and we have low ceilings (8 foot) so their fairly traditional 4" tall valences are going to really be noticeable in these rooms and make the ceilings look lower (in my opinion). Would anyone ever mount an outside shade w/o a valence? Our walls and trim are Pratt & Lambert Seed Pearl so we were looking at white vinyl roller shades. Thanks,

Those are cordless, aren't they? There are too many children killed every year from cords on shades. There is a big push to make all window treatments safer because of the injuries. Most manufacturers are trying to make adjustments, but it's a big expense. Some lawsuits have resulted and even the people making the shades have been named in the suits. Sorry I got off topic, but I just get nervous when I see a set up like yours. We don't even sell anything with cords if they are installed in a kids' bedroom.

I installed 2" white painted faux in our sunroom & 2 bathrooms - similiar to your sizes - Since we have an old home w/lovely moldings I opted for inside mount - because the trim has graduated detail it took some doing to have them properly hang/operate and clear all the trim - Glad I had professionals do that agree w/gk about the 1" good luck

I'd do inside mount. If I could, I would make the center window into 3 separate but abutting shades. I would have them capable of dropping to the floor, even if that meant that when you lowered the shades, you had to pull them out a bit to clear the lower window frame. Of course this doesn't mean you have to lower them that far, but you should have the capability. The wider the shades are, the more expensive and the heavier to lift, plus it puts more strains on the strings and makes them more likely to break. So going narrower has its benefits.

Inside mount also leaves a narrow gap on the sides - which might be a privacy issue?

Thank you for the suggestions. I think I have decided to do the outside mount since the windows are small and the shade is actually about 1 1/2" smaller than the width of the roller. It would pose somewhat of a privacy issue as musicteacher mentioned.
