Peninsula Style / Edge Options

I have googled this topic and didn't find anything, so if I overlooked it, I apologize.

We have a peninsula 9ft 6 inches long(just over 114 inches) and wondered if I am being "boring" or not thinking outside of the obvious in planning just a simple eased edge for my entire counter top.

I am hoping to have seating on the one side of this peninsula and looking into soapstone for my counter top material, otherwise granite. Should the side with seating be squared off too, or rounded out? Or the end of the peninsula that is not along the wall, keep it squared off?

Space is an issue, as the backside of this peninsula (the seating side) will be in our family room, so keep that in mind :)

Let me add that it is complete counter space, no stove top on this peninsula nor overhead cabinets.

What you choose for your edging is strictly personal preference. What is the style of the rest of your kitchen? If you have a traditional kitchen tending towards embellishments, you might prefer an ogee or cove dupont edge. If you have a sleek, modern look going or simple Shaker, you might prefer a straight (eased) edge. If you're worried about little heads hitting the edge, you might choose a 1/4 round or half bullnose edge. Personally, I'd avoid a full bullnose just because I think drips will keep on going right around the curve underneath and be overly messy - could be wrong on that one. As far as space goes, the style of the edge really isn't going to be an issue.

When you say Or the end of the peninsula that is not along the wall, keep it squared off? , do you mean the style of the edging or the shape of the island itself? If you mean the shape of the island, I prefer to round off the corners that protrude into space. Our island in that spot is opposite the dishwasher and is a passage way in and out of the kitchen. Rounded off corners provide just a little more room and make it less likely someone will bang a hip on the peninsula on the way in or out. If you mean edging style, I would stick with one thing for the entire perimeter.

Sorry, but I don't think I'd want a fixed type of seating in a kitchen. It's too inflexible. You can't move seats closer or farther away from the counter for getting in/out of the seats, or to accommodate people of different sizes (small to large...both height and width) or to accommodate different tasks (you might not always want seats there...like when using it as a buffet table). Instead, I think you should try to fix the issue...Lavender_Lass gave you one idea.

I have had the ogee edge for over 2 years with no problems (or crud) and no extra charge. However, the sink is the one place I do not have it. I was going to get the two handled bridge faucet till I saw how much water dripped on the counter from wet hands at my sisters house, and at the same time my then current two handle faucet was making me crazy - needing two hands all the time. I was thinking along similar lines as Buehl's galley lay-out or swapping kitchen with DR. Another option is to go with the sink next to but not in the corner, like this: The sink size stay about the same but this configuration gives you a 24" drawer base, which is always a better storage option over 2 15" base cabinets. Buying one cabinet, even though a little larger, should save you some money, too. Or you can apply that savings to upgrading to a drawer base. I calculate your kitchen at 148 1/2" top to bottom. If you decide to add an island, stick with a shallow one, no more than 18" deep. That will give you 39 1/2" aisles between it and the sink run and between it and the fridge run. Keep in mind that the aisle will shrink from 39 1/2" to 36 1/2" between island and fridge door (not handles) assuming you're purchasing a counter depth fridge. The downside of an island in your kitchen is that it will be somewhat of a barrier island (between fridge and sink) but that compromise might be worth it for the additional storage and counter space a longish, narrow island would offer. It would be similar to these: If you buy a standard depth fridge, you absolutely don't have room for an island; your aisle will shrink by several more inches, creating a serious pinch point in your kitchen, even without the fridge door being open. Live_Wire_oak: Would you be willing to comment on my other thread? In particular, I am unsure about how to mix metals. I don't like them all to match. We have lots of light fixtures in the open concept area, and I am unsure if we need to stick with the same finish for all the light fixtures and all the cabinet hardware. Please comment in this thread, if you have a chance. I like simple, clean lines so would vote for the simplest edge your fabricator will do. It all depends on what you like and the look you're going for.

As far as the corners on the end of the peninsula that stick out into the aisle, you could have the edges rounded off so they're not a bumping hazard for hips and heads. Do you gave small children? Are you clumsy and running into stuff all the time? I can answer yes to both questions, but where that indicates I might want to generously round the corners on the ends of my new peninsula and island, I will not. Again, I like clean lines.

In my old kitchen with laminate, we had one edge completely square and one with a generous curve. DH stuck one of those kid-proofing foam bumpers on the squared edge. It was hideous. Most days it took a great amount of mental strength not to rip that thing off. Od course, when I saw little DH run his head into the bumper I was glad it was there. I will not allow those ugly foam things on my new marble!! I'm not sure what we'll do as we have another little head growing towards that height now. HTH!
