You might be thinking of the Caesarstone Concetto line. My understanding is that the stones are NOT faux, but real and bound together to make a surface in a resin base. Gorgeous, but very pricey! Here's a link.

Thanks, PL. Although the Concetto is similar, I don't believe it is what I saw. I think what I saw was called Honey Onyx. You are right, the Concetto is gorgeous!

You may of seen Onyx cultured marble, it is translucent. While ok for a bath, it is not used/recommended for kitchens.

Are you certain it wasn't stone? A quick google turns up all sorts of sites that feature true honey onyx slabs...

And the answer to the question is, Yes! I'm hallucinating again. Using Francy's wonderful suggestion of going through my history for yesterday, I've checked and cannot find any solid surface onyx looking countertop material. But if I ever do again, I promise to bookmark it, copy the photo to photobucket, and, as my husband would say, write it down on the flyleaf of the family bible! Thanks all for the all the help and many suggestions.

Oh nuts... now I'm in love with yet another countertop material... Aquamarine Onyx! How expensive is this material.. compared to Azul Macabas or Yellow River Granite?

Oh, wow! Those samples are gorgeous at the Cosa Bella site. But considering that in the photo of the entire sheet each one is backed with a sheet of plywood, I'm guessing that onyx is also fragile.

bbstx, your intuitions appear to be right on target. As described on the website patricia43 referred us to (http://www.cosabelladesigns.com/StoneCounterTops/Onyx/Onyx_A.htm):

"Onyx is a very soft stone yet somewhat brittle. It is the result of water dissolving limestone and re-depositing it as sinter, a different kind of stone. Try some searches for "cultured onyx." This material is often described as semitransparent. You still might not be hallucinating. Then again, it might depend. Were you eating a big batch of "specialty" brownies while surfing the web?

Onyx is gorgeous, and in a kitchen it's to die for...really to die for. It can be used in a kitchen as counters, but you just have to know it's not as hard as a granite or marble. (I saw a beautiful soft yellow kitchen with honey onyx...I was going to buy the house....horrible place....just to be in that kitchen).

Honey is typically a stronger onyx than others because of it's pattern. The more you see the look of geodite style pattern, the more fragile it is.

That said, I've seen in it a high traffic bathroom. Yes it's scratched (it was on a backlit floor) but you don't really see that when you're walking on it. On counters it can scratch, and it's probably better used in a bath than in a kitchen, but if you can live with a few scratches...it's fine in either if it's a strong onyx.

I'm doing a countertop in honey onyx in my master suite, and I may use some in a dining room. I just adore the stuff. It's expensive, but it varies significantly in price. Honey onyx is probably up there with a high end granite. Other colors...Turquoise etc., they're VERY expensive. I wanted geodite in browns...OUCH OUCH OUCH (I passed) heh heh
