Hi, everyone. You all have helped me so much with all my questions and minutiae! Thanks so much. The demo began on our tiny galley kitchen at the start of August, and we're slowing making our way through all the insanity. I'm documenting it here if anyone's interested:

Dear Calypsochick, I super enjoyed reading your blog and learning about your design choices (especially regarding subway tiles) and renovation experience so far. I can't wait to see your finished kitchen -- looks like it is going to be gorgeous and charming.

Thanks, Francoise47! The appliances are supposed to get delivered today. Where on earth they will be stored I have no idea.

I don't think it's too busy. There are many different styles of farmhouse sinks. Some are fat and bulbous, like my Shaw's, some are sleek and rectified, some have a lip detail. As for making them flush, if you do a lot of washing at them, you may have a problem with dripping down the front, which clings to the rounded surface of the sink and then drips down the front of your cabinets, which is the reason many people have the sink bumped out a little. Another option is something called a "drip rail" Other people (I have learned here) just close a dish towel into the tops of the sink cabinet doors. That's the lowest-tech option! You might even be able to find a sink smaller than 24" if you try and that's desirable.

Posted this originally in the kitchen forum, but this looks like it might be a better venue! Originally I was going to buy light-colored maple cabinets and use a single overhead fixture plus undercabinet lighting in my small NYC galley kitchen (7'x10', door at one end, window at the other end). (Actually, *originally* I was *just* going to do the overhead fixture, but I was convinced by the wonderful folks on the kitchen forum that I should have the u/c lighting as well.) As it turns out, I bought medium-colored maple cabinets instead, and now I feel I might want more light. I think the cabinets would look nicer (lighter?) with more light thrown at them. So even though I still like the way the single overhead fixture would look (and how inexpensive it is - I was considering a $50 fixture from Home Depot!), I'm wondering if I should really go for recessed lighting - or something else??? Not sure what the options are here. Recessed lighting looks kind of generic to me, but I know it would give me good even light. (How many cans would you put in my size kitchen??) Are there other types of fixtures that would work for me? Does anyone have any ideas? Pictures? Go ahead - light my kitchen!!! ;-) Thanks in advance for all help!

gooster - we thought the exact same thing! Yesterday we went out and got another white cab with open shelving and light wood top for the end of that wall - it was almost too big for the space but we managed to wedge it in there. It looks pretty close in appearance to the other two, enough that it looks fairly integrated. It looks good and will be used for the induction burner that heats the tea kettle! scrappy25 - we gave the IKEA measurements to Cabinet Authority. Unlike Semi-handmade and Scherr's, they don't keep them on file. I got the exact measurements of the fronts from IKEAfans.com. The paint is a factory finish with a very low sheen. I had an option of three whites by Sherwin Williams: Crystal White, Frosty White, and Designer White. I listed them in order by the strength of their yellow undertone, from strong to nonexistent. I went with Designer White because I wanted that stark white look. If you happen to live in NYC, I can just give you the sample color blocks since I don't need them anymore. We had to do the drilling for the fronts ourselves, except for the two doors below the sink - those got standard boring holes for the clip-on hinges. IKEAfans has the template for where the drill holes should go on the drawer fronts. It wasn't hard to do at all. Just remember to measure twice and drill once! We made one mistake and have to live with a little unevenness on a drawer front. I'm not sure what you mean by a box versus door breakdown. Do you mean drawers versus doors? We went with all drawers on one side of the galley (12 total on that side). The other side, where the sink is, got two doors under the sink and two drawers for the trash pullout (the bottom part of that cab looks like a tall door but is actually a pull out drawer). Drawer fronts are pricier to make than doors for some reason.

I went for the Calacatta caldia because I need for the counter to be very white with just subtle hints of green and gold (not gray) and very quiet with not a lot of movement. The walnut is busy and the kitchen is narrow. I originally thought about using a quartz counter but I prefer the depth of the marble. I even thought about quartzite but it was just too much going on with the walnut. I saw the calacatta caldia with walnut cabinets in my KD's showroom and fell in love. And I had been reading GW enough to know that when you fall in love, well you know. Unforunately for my checkbook, the hardware that was installed on those walnut cabinets at the KD was fabulous--the Forms and Surfaces Sweep pull. At $35 apiece, I was appalled and tried to find a substitute. But I was in love and although Hickory had something close, it was not close enough. So I found the F&S for $31 apiece after a lot of looking because they are hard to find (very small consolation) and am going to use them.

I like your blog! ooh new appliances today, so exciting! I too have "grout dried lighter than it was supposed to" drama. As a matter of fact, GC is in there today seeing it for the first time (he didn't do the floor tile work) and he told me it's not as bad as he thought it was gonna be... which made me STEAM on the inside because believe me, it's bad. BUT, he's going to try and fix it. Have fun with yer new appliances! Where will they go?

Ooooh I love your choices. I can't wait to see more. I will be moving back to LI NY in a week or so and do make regular visits to NYC so your post caught my attention. I have a few questions if you don't mind.

Who is the maker of that track lighting? I absolutely love it.

The quartzite is to die for. Do you mind sharing the cost with and without installation? It is definitely worth the trip to NJ for me to get it, not sure if they would install for me due to distance but I could hire someone local to
do the installing.

I really can't wait to see the end result!

As for the countertops, we haven't actually placed an order yet, and from what I remember, the intial estimate for that quartzite is about $2300 for our sized kitchen, plus anywhere from $21 to $95 more depending on the edge you choose. The price includes delivery, installation, templating and sealing, as well as cutting for faucet, etc. If you post a comment on the blog when I write about our countertop installation when it happens, I'll be reminded and can give you the exact pricing then.

Thank you so much Calypso! My kitchen is not huge so the quartzite may be doable, a slight splurge but it's exactly what I had imagined. I will be following your blog.

When do you think the countertops will be installed?

Do you know the name of the quartzite? I am on LI and had issues finding a good white one. Guess it is over the border if I really want it, lol.

I love that first light fixture you posted. It had a lot of personality. Too bad about the size issue. The one you pcked will fit your space better.

Your floor is going to be a major improvement.

Hey Dianalo I grew up in Huntington and my first when i moved out on my own was in Massapequa Park.

I will be moving out east to Manorville, exit 70 on the LIE. I lived there seven years ago before I moved down south and loved it. I have friends from Suffolk county to the city so I'm all over but my mom is in Manorville and I like the quietness.

chihuahua6--It looks like we won't be ready for countertops until the beginning of September. I'm so annoyed because our cabinet delivery/installation just got pushed back!

dianalo--if you go to marble.com and do a search for white granite, there are actually several options. at the yard, a lot of them looked the same. I know I looked at a lot of them, so the ones you see on their web site are the ones I took photos of.

sadiebrooklyn--Nice!! Are you renovating your whole apartment? You stripped to the studs! Let me know how it goes!

calypsochick - I am doing a gut renovation of my apartment courtesy of a failed 8" standpipe (we are right under the watertank). So most of our labor is being paid for by the coop's insurance company. We are still in mold-remediation. I am at the top of the tower in the st. George (you can see it when you're coming over the brooklyn bridge). we have a relatively large (for nyc) apt. with three floors but a TINY galley (normal for nyc) kitchen!

Jackier - we are practically neighbors! LOVE your blog. wish I could get it together to do a blog.....

I also love your 6 light track. Has anyone found that same one elsewhere online? Bellacor is only listing the 4 light one and I think 6 is the only way for me to get the lighting I need in my small kitchen.
