Installing a 32' sink in a 30' sink base

I am purchasing granite countertops, and it includes a free kitchen sink. I have a 30" sink base and my 2 choices are a 25" sink, or a 32" sink. The salesman said that I could cut into the base cross supports a few inches to make room for the large sink. Has anyone done this? I don't think it will look bad since its an under mount sink and will only go over on each side an inch. I have a dishwasher on one side and a slide out garbage cabinet on the other.

I appreciate any feedback, suggestions, or photos of your same situation.

I have a 24 inch sink cabinet and will be cramming a 20x16 (interior) sink into it. Silestone templator who came yesterday to measure for the counter told me they can make the sink fit in the cabinet, but they may have to do so in a way that will make it very difficult to change out the sink if that ever need be. I pretty much said no problem, do what you have to do to make this sink fit, because the sink cannot be returned and we don't want to settle for a smaller sink.

Not sure if this is the same as your situation...?

Hmm I think you need to be a bit more specific on the measurements. Is 32" the measurement from the outside edge to outside edge of the sink? I'm assuming that 30" is the outside to outside of the box of the cabinet, unless it is face framed in which case it could be the exterior of the face frame (I think?) which would be worse. Unless you measured it, it's doubtful that it's the inside of the box because then it would really be a ~31.5" sink base... which would be odd.

Unless you are planning to lop off the top part of your sink base... I'm not really seeing how this is going to work. A 30" sink base is likely only 28.5" interior. The bowl of a 32" sink is likely 30" outside to outside of the bowl only.

You will NEVER be able to change out the sink if there's a problem without completely destroying the sink base. If you go the conventional route of having a sink be smaller than the sink base it sits it, then if there is a problem in the future, the sink can be swapped out, or even possibly changed to another profile and the granite recut. If you think that nothing like that could ever happen to you, just ask Live_wire_oak about her client who shot a hole in a brand new kitchen sink.

I do wish Blanco made a few additional sink sizes in silgranit. I had to settle for a slightly smaller prep sink than I would have ideally chosen, but the choices were either slightly too small, or much too large. I decided I REALLY REALLY wanted Blanco's silgranit so I compromised. I'm very happy I did as I love silgranit sinks more than I thought possible to love a sink. IMHO, after years of reading and research, I would not choose another composite sink brand. You're correct that sink bases can be notched. My prep sink base cab was because, having custom cabs, I was very specific with my cab maker as to which sink I wanted to fit in there. He made it work. You can't, however, fit a 36" sink in a 30" base. And for anyone else reading this, choose your sink first and then make sure you design your kitchen to accomdate the appropriately sized sink base. Did you order an apron front sink base or just a regular sink base? A regular sink base's doors are too tall for an apron front sink and when one retrofits an apron front sink into an existing situation, they usually eliminate the doors and put in a curtain under the sink. If you want a farm sink, and haven't ordered a farm sink base, then stop the order, pay any restocking fee, and get a farm sink base. In the end, it will be cheaper and look better than attempting to hack into a brand new sink base.

If you read the installation and size guide it says for cabinets of 30" or 33" so with a 33" cabinet you would be close enough to use their clips (the 3" is a recommended distance, not cast in stone). The drop in is the easy way with no cabinet modification (i.e. screwing strips to sides) but if you ever want to remove it, it could be almost impossible. I just had the Kohler Whitehaven farm house sink installed in my 36" cabinet and the sink is 35 11/16" and I had the granite counter top already installed so I was removing a sink I hated (one of those sinks with one side wider than the other, worst design imaginable. It was a real challenge as it required a new piece of granite to be cut in for the back side, carefully cut granite on each side with curved end and side 2x4s on each side to support the 143lb sink along with other modifications to the cabinets. Who will do the modifications of the cabinet? It seems that the costs of chewing up your cabinet could offset the savings on the sink (unless the granite people are willing to do it for free and can vouch for the structural integrity of the modified cabinet.)

It's easy for a salesman to say..."well, you only have to..." He gets the sale without the headaches.

Use the 25" sink. You're not talking about slightly "scooping" the top of the cabinet walls to fit the sink flange. You're talking about cutting out a U shaped hole in the sink cabinet walls---and the adjacent cabinet's walls--- that's as deep as the sink--7" or so. That will severely weaken the cabinet's ability to support your granite and sink. I wouldn't want to be standing at that sink full of water if a hidden fissure in the granite decided to crack because it wasn't supported properly.

Better yet, have them deduct the cost of the sink from the price of granite and buy a sink that will fit in that cabinet base properly. A sink that size from Ticor/Kraus will set you back about $300 to $400. This seems like a best way to solve the problem.

I think 28 inch sinks are not that difficult to find.

Free things are not worth much if it makes more problems for you. I would NOT cut out the sides of the sink base cabinet. This will weaken the base structurally.
