Strive Sink by Kohler - 29" sink in a 30" base

I've been leaning towards finding 36" for my sink cab - in my small kitchen - because my of the sinks I have seen that fit into a 30" cabinet are significantly smaller than what you can get in a 36" cabinet, like 24" inches.

However, by accident while googling around yesterday, I found this sink by Kohler. I'm posting both to see if anyone knew anything about it and to add to the list of sinks for 30" cabs, as this question comes up on the group from time to time.

From their page: "This Strive kitchen sink offers professional style with easy-to-clean curved corners. Made of thick, premium quality 16-gauge stainless steel, this 29-inch medium-sized sink offers unique dimensions that maximize the available basin space in a 30-inch cabinet. Strive features a sound-absorption system that significantly reduces disposal and dishwashing noise. This sink includes a combination dishcloth bar/utility shelf to organize dishcloths, scrubbers, and sponges, and a bottom basin rack to help prevent scratches."

Does this mean it would work in a 30" frameless as well as framed cabinet?

It really depends on how you intend to mount it and whether your counter top is in place or not. The specs call for 3" all around to mount from underneath with clips; however, that is not the only way to mount an under sink. Another approach, if the granite or whatever you are using for a counter top is not in place is to have the cut out in the plywood to the exact size of the template and then drop in the sink with silicon under the edges and then place the granite over it and silicon the edges. Another method is to attach two wood 1x2s to each side of the cabinet to support the side edges and then use or not use clips on the front and back (not really needed) then place counter top over it. If counter top is already installed it becomes a much more challenging install but can still be done.

We are gutted right now so we can do it any way but... I'm trying to avoid complicated... I wonder how they can promote this as a sink specifically for a 30" cabinet and then require 3" in every direction? Hm.

You are correct! It is huge! I have it on a 16' wall below an 8' window. I stand at the sink and think I could do with less than a second "bathtub"! That said, it has been great for parties, washing the sweet Grandkids, and it is so nice to be able to get the big frypans into the sink to wash then, and I have to say that the deal in my house is that she is kind enough to cook for me and I'm happy to do the pots and pans. It is a great sink. You will be very pleased with it! One other sink, oops thing! Since we have had the place together we have had some pretty significant parties and the 36" Whitehaven has supported everyone's efforts at the sink;)

Thanks... I did a bit of research this afternoon and can report the following sinks that will fit a 30" base (in the hopes it can be helpful to someone else). Elkay ELU281610-- 28x16 (bowl dimensions), 18 gauge, 10" depth Linea Aqua Vienna- 28x16 (bowl dimensions), 16 gauge, 9" depth Franke EuroPro GNX110-28....this one is out of my price range- 27x19 (roughtly), 11" depth

That was some of my concern...our dishwasher is going to the left of the sink. It will be a panel dishwasher. Was concerned there should be more cabinet meat showing. But is seems the consensus here is that it should be OK. I think the panel on the dishwasher will make it seem less apparent. The whitehaven is like a "mock" farmhouse sink in that the front has a self trimming feature, so the actual cut in the cabinet will be an inch from the side, and than the front covers up almost the entire front (33 inch cabinet covered by 32 11/16" apron front). It is not like the Rohl. Using the 33" sink in a 33" cabinet makes the support inside easier to install. Using a small sink one would need to build out the sides more so they fall under the sink. Depth of a sink is an issue for tall people not short people. Tall people have to stoop more to reach the bottom of the sink, while short people do not. I would not let the 3/4" difference in depth affect your decision. Given that both the Kohler and the Kraus come with grids, both are 16 gauge, and both have rear drains, it is your personal preference and your budget, as there don't seem to be features (that I can see in a brief look) that differentiate them. Edit: I just found a significant difference. The Kohler Strive needs a base cabinet of 30-33". The Kraus needs a base cabinet of 36". What is the size of your sink base cabinet?

If you read the installation and size guide it says for cabinets of 30" or 33" so with a 33" cabinet you would be close enough to use their clips (the 3" is a recommended distance, not cast in stone). The drop in is the easy way with no cabinet modification (i.e. screwing strips to sides) but if you ever want to remove it, it could be almost impossible. I just had the Kohler Whitehaven farm house sink installed in my 36" cabinet and the sink is 35 11/16" and I had the granite counter top already installed so I was removing a sink I hated (one of those sinks with one side wider than the other, worst design imaginable. It was a real challenge as it required a new piece of granite to be cut in for the back side, carefully cut granite on each side with curved end and side 2x4s on each side to support the 143lb sink along with other modifications to the cabinets. Photos below show the finished product.

The only space clearance is needed for clips is in the back, which works regardless. The sides get installed on top of blocking support. Fits into a 30" cabinet. I am considering this for my kitchen. Plus the front is self trimming which is a plus...does no require cutting the entire front off your cabinet. So it will be more forgiving.
